2 www.theweddingguideuk.com CIVIL MARRIAGE OR PARTNERSHIP IN A LICENSED VENUE An Easy Guide A Civil Ceremony is a non-religious ceremony that can take place in any licensed venue or Register Office. Two registrars attend, one to conduct the ceremony and a second to register the marriage. You will need two adults (responsible over-18 year olds) to witness your marriage then just leave the rest to the experts whilst you take in the beauty of your surroundings and the joy of the occasion. Here, Northumberland Registration Service guide you through the process. BOOKING A REGISTRAR FOR YOUR SPECIAL DAY Once you have chosen your venue, the next step is to book the Registrar to conduct your ceremony. Legally, this should be done in conjunction with booking your venue to ensure a Registrar is available not only on the day that you want to be married but also at (roughly) the time you would like to have your ceremony. Lunchtime works well for a full reception with sit down meal, but a late afternoon ceremony might suit your plans for a more intimate day. Your venue will be able to give you the telephone number of the Local Authority Registrar Team that covers the venue. Most Local Authorities ask for a booking fee or deposit at this stage to confirm the date, time and venue. They will also take all of your contact details and send you a booking confirmation. Remember to keep your contact details up to date should you move, change email address or phone number. You now have your venue and a Registrar to conduct - what comes next? GIVING LEGAL NOTICE Once you are within 12 months of your ceremony date you will need to give Legal Notice of Marriage or Civil Partnership. ‘Giving Notice’ as it is often called, produces the legal paperwork that is required, by law, for your ceremony. This is vital as your marriage or civil partnership cannot take place without it. We suggest this be done around 6 months prior to your ceremony date (and at the very minimum 29 days prior, although we would never recommend leaving it this late!) In England or Wales, the appointment for you to ‘Give Notice’ is made with the Registrars in the district in which you live. Even if you reside in a different county to your chosen venue, you must contact your local registrars to Give Notice. Your local Registrars will arrange an appointment that you both need to attend and advise you on the exact documents to take to the appointment. The current fee for giving notice in England and Wales is £35 each, so £70 per couple. If you live in Scotland or abroad, the procedure is different. Your Conducting Registrars will advise you accordingly at the time you make your initial booking. PLANNING YOUR CEREMONY Once you have Given Legal Notice, your local Registrars will electronically inform the Registrars who are conducting your ceremony and you are now, legally, able to proceed. You will receive a Ceremony Pack to work through allowing you to choose the wording for your ceremony and vows. www.theweddingguideuk.com 3 your own vows to each other or altering wording to make it perfect for you both? As long as the words are fitting to being married and do not contain any religious references, the details can be chosen by you. Registrars love to have your input and will be more than happy to discuss your ideas. A beautiful way to enhance your ceremony is to ask a guest to do a Reading. This can be chosen from the many options online or, if your guest is good with words, maybe they could write something just for the two of you? A close friend, sibling, parent or grandparent would be perfect to say a few words. Also, if your wedding has a theme, let your registrars know – they may join in! Once you have returned the script, a registrar will give you a call to chat through the ceremony and make sure all is well. Your final ceremony fee will then be due. This varies across districts, different days of the week and months of the year. Final ceremony fees usually range between £480 and £600. ON THE DAY Your Registrars need to see each of you on the wedding day, prior to your ceremony taking place. They will arrive approximately half an hour beforehand and the staff at the venue will arrange for them to see each of you, individually and in private, away from your guests. This is to confirm your details, put your mind at ease about the ceremony and answer any last-minute questions you may have. You will not need any paperwork and all fees will have been paid leaving you to enjoy your day! Your Registrars will also speak with your photographer / videographer to confirm they are happy for them to discreetly capture the entire ceremony. The only exception is the actual signing of the Marriage Schedule which is private due to data protection. Most registrars will help set up a mock signing immediately after the official schedule is signed, for photographs. Things to remember: • Bring a copy of your own promises and readings with you on the day – you could mount them on card and keep them as a memento. Any music (phone / iPod) should be arranged with and given directly to the venue. • Once the ceremony is over, you will be asked to check and sign the Marriage Schedule. It is important that you check this carefully before signing it. If a mistake is found later and you require a correction to be made, a fee of £90 is payable. • Your ceremony should start promptly to ensure the registrars can travel safely to their next wedding. THE INTRODUCTION OF THE MARRIAGE SCHEDULE SYSTEM - FROM MAY 4TH 2021 This Act has modernised how marriages are registered - the first real change since 1837 - through the issue of a Marriage Schedule System and registration on an electronic register. This means you no longer sign a large, traditional book but now sign on an electronic device. This creates a more secure system for keeping marriage records and is more efficient and simpler to administer and amend, if necessary, in the future. Your two witnesses will also sign. The electronic register also allows for the names of parents of the couple (mother / father / parent / stepparent) to be included in the marriage entry and on marriage certificates, instead of just fathers’ names as was the case previously. With thanks to Northumberland Registration Team. www.fionasaxtonphotography.com www.aliceelizabethphotography.co.uk

4 www.theweddingguideuk.com Your marriage ceremony should be unique to you both: personal, meaningful and emotional. Writing your own vows and using music that evokes memories of your journey together so far, are perfect ways of building your bespoke marriage ceremony. To go that extra step, inviting a guest, or guests, to read during your ceremony can bring a whole new wave of emotion! Readings can evoke tears (of happiness!), waves of remembrance for absent friends, knowing nods and winks amongst guests as well as roars of laughter! Selecting the right emotion-inducing words for a family member to read or a light-hearted look at marriage for your best friend to recite is so important. Here are some ideas: MARRIAGE READINGS YES I’LL MARRY YOU by Pam Ayres Yes, I’ll marry you, my dear. And here’s the reason why. So I can push you out of bed When the baby starts to cry. And if we hear a knocking And it’s creepy and it’s late, I hand you the torch you see, And you investigate. Yes I’ll marry you, my dear, You may not apprehend it, But when the tumble-drier goes It’s you that has to mend it. You have to face the neighbour Should our Labrador attack him, And if a drunkard fondles me It’s you that has to whack him. Yes, I’ll marry you, You’re virile and you’re lean, My house is like a pigsty You can help to keep it clean. That sexy little dinner Which you served by candlelight, As I do chipolatas, You can cook it every night!!! It’s you who has to work the drill And put up curtain track, And when I’ve got PMT it’s you who gets the flak, I do see great advantages, But none of them for you, And so before you see the light, I DO, I DO, I DO!! THE ART OF A GOOD MARRIAGE by Wilfred Arlan Peterson Happiness in marriage is not something that just happens. A good marriage must be created. In marriage the little things are the big things. It is never being too old to hold hands. It is remembering to say “I love you”at least once a day. It is never going to sleep angry. It is at no time taking the other for granted; the courtship should not end with the honeymoon, it should continue through all the years. It is having a mutual sense of values and common objectives. It is standing together facing the world. It is forming a circle of love that gathers in the whole family. It is doing things for each other, not in the attitude of duty or sacrifice, but in the spirit of joy. It is speaking words of appreciation and demonstrating gratitude in thoughtful ways. It is not looking for perfection in each other. It is cultivating flexibility, patience, understanding and a sense of humour. It is having the capacity to forgive and forget. It is giving each other an atmosphere in which each can grow. It is a common search for the good and the beautiful. It is establishing a relationship in which the independence is equal, dependence is mutual and the obligation is reciprocal. It is not only marrying the right partner, it is being the right partner. 24, The Arcade, Barnsley, S70 2QN www.kingstonjewellersbarnsley.co.uk Telephone: 01665 602870 Email: [email protected] www.mynorthumberlandwedding.co.uk Whether you are looking for an idyllic castle along the spectacular coastline or an opulent stately home in the tranquillity of the countryside, picturesque Northumberland has something for everyone. www.theweddingguideuk.com 1 WEDDING TRADITIONS DID YOU KNOW?... I n the past brides wore their best dresses when getting married, whatever the colour. Some did choose white as a symbol of purity and virginity and to ward off evil spirits, but it was not until Queen Victoria wore white at her wedding in 1840 (not silver as previous royal brides) that white became popular. Today, pure white is less popular with ivory and creams being preferred. This traditional rhyme gives a few more options: Married in White, you have chosen right Married in Grey, you will go far away Married in Black, you will wish yourself back Married in Red, you will wish yourself dead Married in Green, ashamed to be seen Married in Blue, you will always be true Married in Pearl, you will live in a whirl Married in Yellow, ashamed of your fellow Married in Brown, you will live in the town Married in Pink, your spirit will sink DID YOU KNOW?... During a marriage ceremony, the bride always stands on the left. I have heard 2 explanations of this, the first of which seems far more reasonable!! Many years ago a groom would have to capture his bride by kidnapping her. If the groom then had to fight off other men interested in his bride or fight for her honour, he could hold his lady with his left hand keeping his right hand free to use his sword. The second explanation (which has to be thought up by a man!) is that your bride goes on the side you walk your dog on!!! Now, who prefers the first option? DID YOU KNOW?... There are several explanations of why a bride wears a veil. It is believed the veil predates the wedding dress by centuries perhaps originating in the days when a groom threw a blanket over the head of his chosen woman as he captured her and carried her off!! Another traditional explanation is the veil was used to disguise the bride to confuse evil spirits who were believed to attend marriages to cause mischief. The veil became popular in Britain in the eighteen hundreds and is now associated with modesty and chastity. In some Eastern ceremonies the veil is used to hide the bride’s face until after the wedding ceremony. This is especially true for arranged marriages as by the time the veil is lifted, the couple are already committed to each other and it is too late for the groom to change his mind! DID YOU KNOW?... Confetti derives from pagan wedding rituals in which newly-weds were showered with rice or grain as a symbol of fertility. Rose petals were also scattered before the bride to ward off evil spirits. Today, dried flower petals, rice paper confetti and bubbles are all used and can look great on photographs. Images courtesy of seanelliottphotography.co.uk 8 www.theweddingguideuk.com

Images courtesy of seanelliottphotography.co.uk www.theweddingguideuk.com 9 I ncluding wedding rituals in ceremonies is becoming increasingly popular. Couples are increasingly looking for more creative and meaningful ways to celebrate and symbolise their unity. There is great opportunity to inject your personality into your ceremony and your Celebrant can help you create something that is perfect for you both. Traditional rituals include sand blending and unity candles. Both symbolise the joining of two individuals and the creation of a new union and family. Hand-fasting is also popular where the couples hands are tied showing the binding together of two lives. However, you could consider raising a toast with your favourite tipple - maybe a cocktail or a shot! You could create an anniversary box or a time capsule to open on an important anniversary or incorporate crystals or even a Harry Potter theme into the ceremony – the choice is yours! You can choose what you want to include in the rest of your day, why not choose what to include in your Cele-brant led ceremony too! GEMMA SAYS... 10 www.theweddingguideuk.com WHY CHOOSE A CELEBRANT LED WEDDING CEREMONY? Not every wedding has to be the same. That’s obvious right?! Not every couple share the same vision of how they want their wedding day to be, so why is it that when it comes to choosing the ceremony you want, the options remain so limited? These days fewer couples are seeking a traditional church wedding, turning to a civil ceremony as the only viable alternative, but for some couples this still doesn’t offer them the flexibility and choice they’d hoped for. Increasingly couples are seeking a ceremony that is as unique as themselves, that captures the essence of who they are. They’re searching for something relevant and meaningful which reflects their values, beliefs and depicts their own love story. They want a ceremony written for them, with them, and about only them. That is where a celebrant can help. We are not restricted to certain times or places: at dawn on a beach, at dusk on a cliff-top...whatever you desire! Last year was particularly special as the restrictions of lockdown finally lifted and couples were able to reunite once again with family and friends to share and celebrate their special day. Many couples felt it was important to acknowledge the absence of loved ones by lighting candles or sharing a few, gentle, personal words, whilst others sought a quiet moment of reflection. The beauty of a celebrant led ceremony is that it offers couples the opportunity to express themselves as fully or as discreetly as they choose. One couple’s request was to celebrate the coming together of not only themselves but their families, friends and patterns of life. Another wanted to blend the traditions and rituals of both their cultures which they did perfectly by creating a very personal candle lighting moment. Another wanted a bohemian affair and declared their promises to one another by a lake in the afternoon sun followed by dancing under the stars! Whatever your desires for your ceremony, we can create words and adapt rituals to suit you. Currently, couples still need to legally register their marriage at a registry office, but we hope the forthcoming reforms to the Marriage Act will enable celebrants to legally officiate marriages, giving couples the freedom and flexibility they have been longing for. When you feel ready to book your ceremony, contact your local celebrant to explore the options.

With over 27 years experience and over 560 weddings successfully arranged, her renowned reputation is enviable. Having worked with the best suppliers, venues and registrars in the North-East for so long, Dawn Marie knows the industry inside out and her reputation for the highest standards in professionalism, attention to detail and patience along with her sense of humour make her the perfect planner. Here are some of Dawns top tips to help couples navigate through the wedding planning process... “As soon as you book your venue, start to look around for the best suppliers. The best florists, cake makers, photographers etc. get booked up years in advance but all will take bookings on basic information i.e. table centres for about 10 tables and roughly 3 bridesmaids’ bouquets etc. They don’t need finer details – flower type, colours – until nearer the event. Couples don’t realise you can reserve suppliers time without knowing the full details of your day and I have seen many couples disappointed because of this. Visit lots of good quality wedding fairs – suppliers and venues often have special offers available if you book at, or just after, a wedding fair. At my Elite Wedding Fairs, I like to showcase smaller, local companies that are often more quirky and can offer a really personal touch. Before booking, ALWAYS confirm special deals, discounts and full descriptions of what you have agreed, with prices, in writing. This is invaluable especially if your wedding is 2 or 3 years away. Take help when offered…the aunty who wants to make your cake, the friend who loves making stationery, the neighbour who has a beautiful car… as long as you trust them, people contributing to your day in lieu of a present can create very personal touches and save a fortune. If you can, view your venue at the time you are getting married – height of summer, autumn, winter. This will help with all sorts of things such as how the gardens look, which areas need more decoration, where outside drinks receptions could be...even if your venue could be snowbound!! Finally, CHECK AND DOUBLE CHECK. This is where a good planner will be invaluable. My ‘Final Check’ service includes contacting all suppliers to ensure they have the right timings, names, delivery addresses, quantities, sizes, special request information, etc, etc. ALWAYS get a mobile / emergency number for suppliers in case of any difficulties. Once done, sit back, relax and trust that you have done everything possible to make your day fantastic!”

24 www.theweddingguideuk.com REAL WEDDING A wedding jam packed with fun! Sarah and Alexander married in July 2022 at Newton Hall, Northumberland THE PROPOSAL It was the anniversary of the day we met when Alex got down on one knee in our London flat. Our lockdown puppy was asleep on the floor next to us and I was completely caught off guard, with pyjamas on, messy hair, and a mouth full of crisps. We didn’t tell anyone for a full day and walked around the park with our little secret (and a beautiful new emerald ring on my finger). The whole thing was just perfect. THE VENUE Newton Hall is a gorgeous old hall set in the Northumberland countryside. Even though the building was covered in scaffolding, the grounds are lovely and make for a stunning setting. The inside is cool and quirky with deer heads covered in pearls and a beautiful reception room overlooking the fields. It has a rustic, chic vibe which was just what we wanted. THE MORNING Alex and I enjoyed some American pancakes outside on the terrace before the chaos began. Then we said our “goodbyes” and “meet you at the altar.” The girls met me in the bridal suite for champagne, hair and makeup. There was plenty of laughs and even a few tears (as expected). The boys had a more active morning, filled with some casual rugby on the nearby beach and some beers at the local pub down the road. Overall, it was quite relaxing and a gorgeous, sunny summer day. THE CEREMONY Alex and I were legally married in a registry office a year before our more ‘traditional wedding’, so we chose to have a humanist ceremony by Ross Hutchinson. It was hands down the best ceremony either one of us has ever heard! Ross met us both in person and on Zoom taking time to learn about us as a couple. He put together the most wonderful script about our love story which made everyone laugh and cry and truly put us both at ease. Walking down the aisle was quite nerve racking but Ross made it all fun and comfortable.

DRINKS & PHOTOGRAPHS Guests were greeted with a glass of champagne upon arrival so they could sip something during the ceremony. After the ceremony, we had our speciality cocktails, Picantes. It’s a take on a Spicy Margarita and Alex’s favourite. We were privileged to have Sean Elliot as our photographer. He was a true gem and professional. He kept us on time and told us where to be and when. I don’t think the day would have gone so smoothly without him! DINING & SPEECHES We had delicious canapés followed by a 3-course wedding breakfast. But the real hit of the party was the late-night hog roast – something I would definitely recommend. The speeches took place throughout breakfast and were both heartfelt and extremely funny. Well done to The Maid of Honour, Best Man and the Groom! CAKE We opted to forego a cake and instead put the money towards an open bar for all our guests to enjoy. STYLING Newton Hall is already stunning so we didn’t need too much styling or décor. We were fortunate to work with Styled & Seated who curated the most beautiful centrepieces and bouquets for us.They were truly magic and just what we had in mind. FIRST DANCE We danced to the classic ‘Tenerife Sea’ by Ed Sheeran. He really knows how to write a song for a wedding, doesn’t he? ENTERTAINMENT Instead of a typical photo booth we opted for Mike Giblin, a brilliant caricaturist. Guests really loved the hilarious drawings and it was something a lot of people hadn’t seen at a wedding. In the evening we were joined by House of Sax who played Ibiza classics all night - an absolute crowd pleaser!

Guests really loved the hilarious drawings and it was something a lot of people hadn’t seen at a wedding. In the evening we were joined by House of Sax who played Ibiza classics all night - an absolute crowd pleaser! FAVOURITE MOMENTS Because I’m American and Alex in English, the wedding was the first time a lot of our friends and family were meeting for the first time. A favourite moment for both of us was looking around and seeing everyone chatting, laughing, and getting along so well. We mixed the groups in our table plan and it really paid off. We also agree that seeing each other when walking down the aisle was an incredibly special moment. TOP TIPS I would say these are my top 3: • Host a welcome dinner the night prior so your groomsmen and bridesmaids can meet and get to know each other • Kit out the bathrooms with emergency items such as deodorant, hairspray, bobby pins, etc. • Don’t sweat the things that are out of your control – it’s just not worth the stress OUTFITS I always knew I wanted a classic and timeless wedding dress, something a bit like Cinderella at the ball. I fell in love with the second dress I tried on with my mom in my hometown of Boston, Massachusetts. I brought it back to London in my mom’s old suitcase and was happy to see it survived the journey across the pond. It was a bit heavy and tricky to lift my arms in so I changed into another dress after dinner. It’s something I would highly recommend for those that want to dance around all night. Alex also wanted something elegant and stylish, so he went with a classic black tuxedo and boy did he look good! We were fortunate to work with Styled & Seated who curated the most beautiful centrepieces and bouquets for us. They were truly magic and just what we had in mind. 30 www.theweddingguideuk.com REAL WEDDING AS TOLD BY CHARLOTTE ATKINSON PHOTOGRAPHY Kelly and Ricky were married in June 2022 at the Principle Hotel, York. I had been looking forward to their day since our initial wedding photography meeting back in 2020. Kelly had a beautiful suite for her bridal preparation at the Principal. With her daughter, six bridesmaids, her mum and the grooms mum, they needed a lot of space! There was a real sense of excitement and anticipation as the make-up artists and hairdressers began getting everyone wedding ready! With the groom waiting patiently at the front of the ceremony room, the bride was lead down the aisle by her nan and her dad. As a wedding photographer, the thing I love the most about being a part of your wedding day is creating beautiful images for you to look back on. I have a great passion for wedding photography and am in my element when I can get a couple on their own for some beautiful, emotional, fun photographs. Kelly and Ricky’s first dance as a married couple was a live, acoustic version of ‘Set You Free’ by NTrance. The guests were spoilt for choice during the evening with car simulators, Poker and Roulette tables and everyones favourite - Beer Pong! 24, The Arcade, Barnsley, S70 2QN www.kingstonjewellersbarnsley.co.uk

32 www.theweddingguideuk.com REAL WEDDING A wedding full of special touches Abbey and Kieran were married in September 2022 at Hallgarth, The Manor House, Durham THE PROPOSAL I t was Christmas Day 2016. Kieran called me over to the Christmas tree saying there was something wrong with the decoration we bought together to represent our first Christmas. When I looked, there was a ring box! I turned round Kieran was down on one knee and he asked me to marry him. I said no at first as I thought he was joking! Once I realised it was the real thing I obviously said yes! THE VENUE We had our reception and wedding night at the wonderful Hallgarth Manor. The venue was magical from the drive up to the front doors, the beautiful gardens, grand staircase, and the wonderful staff. It was the perfect backdrop to our dream wedding. THE MORNING I had a relaxed time full of laughs, smiles and fizzy bubbles with my mam and maid of honour. We enjoyed the pampering of getting our hair and makeup done. I also received special gifts from them both which made me an emotional wreck - in the best possible way! Kieran spent his morning with my Dad and our little boy, Teddy Fionn. He also spent time making the finishing touches to his wedding speech...which I believe is code for writing the whole of his speech!! THE CEREMONY St Laurence Church, Pittington which is very special to me and my family and is utterly beautiful. We included 4 pieces of music that are special to us both along with 3 readings, one of which was called ‘The Day I Married my Best Friend’ which was perfect for us. PHOTOGRAPHS One thing that was really special to us was having the perfect photographer. Edward Ashley Photography captured exactly what was happening, very ‘in the moment’ raw and emotional which we will treasure forever. Ed was honestly the perfect wedding photographer and we can’t express how grateful we are. DINING & SPEECHES We chose a ‘sweetheart’ top table with just the 2 of us. Once we had been announced into the dining room and everyone was comfortable, we began with the speeches. They were all amazing but the grooms was outstanding - even if I do say so myself! We laughed, cried and afterwards everybody got up and started cuddling and chatting to one another. It was very surreal. Our delicious meal followed, along with plenty of wine and buckets of beer on the tables. CAKE Our cake was outstanding. We wanted something that was really out there and different and that no other couple would have. It represented our theme of a woodland wedding perfectly...in the shape of a tree trunk! FIRST DANCE Our first dance started off really slow. It was nice spending that little bit of quality time together whilst our photographer captured some intimate moments. Then, not long into the dance, the tempo switched to a dance track and the DJ invited everybody onto the dance floor to share in our dance! ENTERTAINMENT We wanted a huge party atmosphere which was perfectly created by our disco. SPECIAL TOUCHES My bouquet included a picture of my Granda so he was there to walk with me down the aisle. Our table were styled with candles, wooden logs, flowers and material to perfectly fit our theme. We named our tables after woodland flowers. We included a Memory Table of pictures of loved ones who are no longer with us but we wish could have shared our day. This was so important and lead to many happy tears. We had sparklers during the evening which were lots of fun bringing everyone outside together and lead to some great photographs.

34 www.theweddingguideuk.com We made our own pinecone name tags and had sunflower seed favours which we hope will remind guests of our wedding day as they watch them grow. We also had chocolate favours made by Auntie Lisa with our own chocolate labels! Having our little boy there to share in our special day was just so special. We were meant to be married July 2021 but covid meant we had to rearrange. Now we’re so glad we did because it meant lots of pictures with Teddy Fionn. Making sure we got a picture with every one of our guests was very important to us, so we made it into a challenge! During the evening the DJ asked everyone to sit down. He played the track ‘We are Family’ and we had until the end of the song to run around the room and get a picture at each table. All I can say is they weren’t any ordinary photos! We jumped on tables, belly-slid across the floor and pulled some ridiculous faces. FAVOURITE MOMENT Bride: I have two. The ceremony. Especially my dad walking me down the aisle and seeing my future husband and son waiting for me. Seeing all our guests together supporting and celebrating us. The other was Kieran’s speech. Listening to my husband talk about me, our son, my family, his family. It was all just so magical and still brings a tear to my eye thinking about it. Even knowing he hadn’t written the ending and just winged it at the end - it was amazing! Groom: Definitely seeing Abbey coming down the aisle with all our close family and friends there to celebrate. TOP TIPS Bride: Take in every moment. You invest so much time and effort, try to sit back and enjoy every second. It goes by in a flash. Don’t let other peoples opinions affect what you want. It’s your day, nobody else’s. Groom: Have your speech written before 8.30 on the morning of the wedding!! OUTFITS My dress and Veil was from the amazing Blue Bow Bridal Company. Here is a list of alternatives which guests will be sure to take home... Flower bulbs or seeds, a book, tea-in-a-tube, home-made alcoholic miniatures, lottery tickets, chocolates, personalised key rings / pens / candles / bottle stoppers / golf balls / shot glasses, a ‘day after’ bag (paracetamol, breath mints, bottle of water, energy bar), semi precious stones (such as rose quartz to represent love), a miniature picture frame with a photo of you and your guest, chocolate name tags (to double as place cards), engraved / decaled glasses, a pocket angel or a box of tic tacs! All handcrafted roses are made to order and can be kept forever...an environmentally friendly way to treasure your beautiful wedding flowers. WEDDING BOUQUETS Wedding bouquets come in lots of shapes and styles: hand-tied, cascading, round, posy, asymmetrical, fresh flowers, dried, faux to name a few. To get yours just right, there are a few things to consider... Think about the time of year you are getting married and what flowers will be in season. This will help keep the cost under control. Is your wedding traditional, modern or rustic? A cluster of loosely tied wild flowers looks great in a rustic barn setting but would not suit a very formal affair. Think about the overall colour scheme of the wedding and the colour of your dress? White and ivory dresses can look very different with different colour tones. Perhaps the most important consideration is the shape and style of your wedding dress. For example, a column gown, narrow at the waist and close fitting to the floor, suits a smaller, elegant arrangement so the eye is drawn in. A wedding ball gown can take a grander bouquet with large blooms as smaller flowers will get lost amongst the attention-grabbing skirt. If the top of your dress has lots of detail, a bouquet which is held lower won’t hide the embellishments. Your florist will be able to guide you. This can be achieved by the formality of your wording and also through the design itself. We’ve enjoyed a surge in minimalist invitation suites recently, classic and versatile, perfect for both sophisticated black-tie style affairs and the more modern, relaxed wedding alike. www.theweddingguideuk.com 41 Contrary to what many people think, preloved does not necessarily mean preworn! The vast majority of our dresses have actually not been altered or worn before. Many are ex-sample dresses from other bridal boutiques and we also get offered dresses direct from top designers themselves. Sadly, following the pandemic, we were contacted by thousands of brides looking to sell brand new, unworn dresses. Some because of a change of circumstances - venue, season, weight changes, pregnancies, and some because they had just fallen out of love with their dress because of the time that passed. This means we have lots of amazing dresses to bring to you! We hand pick them for the boutique to bring you a treasure trove of different designers and styles and we have dresses to suit everyone - all ages and sizes 4-36! We also have a special love for our alternative brides with some colourful gowns that break with tradition as well as our plus size collection of brand new dresses that are made to order. Not only are we fans of recycling, we encourage up-cycling. We love it when a bride finds a dress she loves and makes it unique by adding a corset back, illusion top, embellishment or sleeves. By buying a designer wedding dress that is already in existence rather than having a new one made, you are making a choice that is not just better for the planet but also saves you money! 42 www.theweddingguideuk.com WEDDING DRESS STYLE: Which style are you? With so many different styles to choose from, how do you know which wedding dress style will suit you and compliment your body shape? Helen from Simply Wed Bridal in Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear, offers some words of wisdom. “In short you need to try them on. Oh, and be open to trying something you never thought you would. So many brides come in with ideas and pictures of what they think will suit them and walk out ecstatic after choosing something completely different! Consider your wedding theme, how will your dress tie in? Are you having a casual or more formal affair? Most importantly choose a dress that you are comfortable in. You want to be able to dance all night. Remember, beauty comes from within and you should feel confident, comfortable and absolutely radiate gorgeousness on your big day!” Here is Helen’s guide to help you find Your Wedding Dress Style... BALL GOWN Ball wedding gowns evoke the most formal of styles for wedding dress attire. Their attention-grabbing skirts are often multi-layered and extremely full, making them steal the spotlight at your wedding. Layers of ruffles, tulle, and satin organza provide endless details for admiring onlookers. A long veil can be added for extra dramatic flair. Suits: Tall, slender, hourglass, pear-shaped and inverted triangle ladies

www.theweddingguideuk.com 43 MERMAID / TRUMPET Mermaid gowns are incredibly fitted through the bodice down to the booty! This creates a captivating style and a dramatic flare typically by using a different material to that of the bodice, such as tulle. Trumpet wedding dresses have a similar fitted look but rather than having a different fabric for the bottom of the gown, a material such as crinoline is used to create a structured petticoat that makes the dress flare out more. These curve-hugging silhouettes are wildly popular as they blend the feminine fun of a flowing skirt with a sexy curve-enhancing fit. Suits: Hourglass, tall, slender and pear-shaped ladies FIT ‘N’ FLARE Similar to the mermaid style but a little easier to wear, these gowns hug nicely through the bodice and booty without feeling too tight or too loose. Using the same material for the whole dress, they gently flare out emphasising curves in all of the right places. Suits: Hourglass, tall, slender, athletic and pear-shaped ladies

44 www.theweddingguideuk.com PRINCESS / A-LINE You will feel like royalty in an A-line/princess wedding dress! The flowing bottom and narrow top create an ‘A’ shape that adds elegance to these dreamy gowns. Brides who have concerns about large hips and who want extra comfort at their weddings can move around comfortably in these styles. Suits: Petite, apple, pear shaped women, hourglass, tall and slender and fuller figure ladies COLUMN GOWNS These dresses may seem deceptively simple but they are actually some of the most elegant wedding dress styles around. With beautiful details like lace, beading, and notice-me necklines, you can go as fancy as you want or opt for a more natural look that still looks stunning. Close fitting with a straighter skirt that loosely skims your figure. Suits: Hourglass, tall and slender and petite Simply Wed Bridal Ltd are based in Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear Images provided by the Ronald Joyce Collection

Now is the time to start thinking about your suit. You might opt for a tailor-made suit or have groomsmen scattered around the country so it is never too early to start planning what you are wearing. Colours, fabrics and style all need consideration. Will the style suit your venue – a formal morning suit doesn’t work so well in a rustic barn! A 3-piece tweed suit looks great but might be a little hot in the height of summer – perhaps you could opt for a 2-piece instead? What about accessories: shoes, cufflinks, braces, flat cap, even a pocket for a hip flask! Think about what is important to you and take advice from the experts in the shop. Too many grooms begin their search only a few months before their wedding date but this can really limit your choice, especially if you are hiring. Start with a planning visit to discuss colours, styles and fabric choice. This will make your ‘trying on’ session much more productive. www.theweddingguideuk.com 47 22 YEARS AS A BRIDAL STYLIST I have always been intrigued by the way make-up enhances facial features. Understanding the skin and how it ‘behaves’ is fundamental to creating natural looking make-up that not only lasts, but relates well to the camera. I aim to create the perfect individual style for each bride I have the privilege to work with by using a unique combination of colours and techniques. This begins with discussing themes, styles and ideas for your wedding day. If you’re not sure of what you want, we can work it out together. A hair and make-up trial follows. I ask that you leave the completed look for as long as possible afterwards to give you an idea of how it feels and lasts. If needed, we can make adjustments to ensure the perfect look for your wedding day. Adele’s theme was slightly vintage with warm Autumn colours which was a dream to work with – so much style as you can see! Ultimately, my focus is YOU, to make sure you look and feel your best on one of the most important days of your life and I am honoured to be part of it.
