DAHLONEGA-LUMPKIN COUNTY JAYCEES CLOSE OUT 2016 WITH EMPTY
STOCKING FUND AND RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS.
After completing the annual Gold Rush Days Festival, the Dahlonega Jaycees move into planning their largest annual program: The Empty Stocking Fund.
This yearly program allows the Jaycees to provide Christmas gifts, clothing, toiletries and groceries to families that live within Lumpkin County. In 2016, the
Dahlonega Jaycees adopted over 30 families with more than 90 children total. The families are selected through nominations from the community, local school
officials and other nonprofits within the community. Collaborating with other nonprofits in Lumpkin County ensures that the families adopted by the Dahlonega
Jaycees are not receiving support from multiple Christmas programs. This increases the number of families supported in the community.
The families provide a list of toys and hobby interests for the children. The chapter then works to purchase up to $75 worth of toys per child. School, sleep and
special occasion clothing, as well as jackets, hats and gloves are purchased for each child also. In addition to the clothing and other items, the chapter buys a month
of groceries for the families and provides gift cards for them to purchase perishable items.
The Dahlonega Jaycees do not stop with providing items for the families. The group goes a step further, and in conjunction with volunteers from the
community, the gifts are wrapped. The wrapped gifts are sorted by family and marked “To: Name, From: Santa.” It takes weeks to complete the wrapping process,
which makes a quick turnaround time between when the Gold Rush Days Festival ends to delivery day. Families are given an option to pick-up the Empty
Stocking Fund items or the Jaycees elves along with Mr. and Mrs. Clause make deliveries.
The Dahlonega Jaycees also recently created a new program: The Random Act of Kindness program. The program empowers chapter members to branch
out from the normal support criteria used to determine family and organization support. The group allotted a total of $1,200 to the program in 2016. The acts
resulting from that funding ranged from buying a heater for a family in need to providing care items for local firefighters battling forest fires.

CLEAR A LOCAL NEIGHBORHOOD IN PREPARATION FOR GEORGIA WALK TO
SCHOOL DAY
(L-R): Jared Orton, Crystal Bridges, Cynthia Wright, Rachel Bishop, Aaron Cradduck, Timothy Burnsed, James Hall and Chris Player.
The Savannah Jaycees partnered with Healthy Savannah to clear a local neighborhood in preparation for Georgia Walk to School Day. Students
within a 1.5-mile radius do not have a bus pick-up available and must walk to school. Litter, obstructed sidewalks and lack of sidewalks are barriers
to walking safely to school and contribute to crime and safety hazards.
Savannah Jaycees volunteers cleared sidewalks, trimmed weeds and picked up litter along the path at Butler Elementary School. Their event was
sponsored by Full Turn Services. For more information, visit https://www.facebook.com/events/1387072248024013/

ATHENS JAYCEES
The Athens Jaycees are looking at a big year. We started off with our annual Jaycees January Jog. The 5k was a big success, but the weather took
a turn for the worse and forced us to cancel the 10k. Despite the inclement weather, we had a successful event. Now we are gearing up for a very
big opportunity this year. We have taken on the Athens Twilight Criterion as our new signature project. This is a huge undertaking for our group and
could have a lasting impact on our community. We are looking to make this event a huge success, both for the Athens Jaycees and the community.
We look forward to big things to come and the positive impact that it will have on the Greater Athens Area.
