104 | B W BUSINESSWORLD | 16 December 2023 Institutes must realign their curriculum to the new and emerging phase of industrialisation, industry 5.0 which requires humans working alongside advanced tech to boost the effectiveness of workplace processes, emphasises Fr. Antony R. Uvari, SJ, Vice Chancellor, XIM University The XIM University is built with a strong focus and foundation of academic and service excellence, personal values and social concerns, asserts Fr. Antony R. Uvari, SJ, Vice Chancellor, XIM University. He tells BW Businessworld that the university distinguishes itself in quality education in the ‘Spirit of Magis’, enabling people to lead extraordinary lives. While talking about how tech integration in education influences the skills of students, Uvari says, “Information and communication technology has a positive effect on student learning and should be included in classroom instruction. Most students believe that their learning is improved by integrating technology into the classroom curriculum.” Incorporating Technology in Curriculum XIM’s faculty-driven academic system, research-oriented teaching-learning environment, industry connection, strong student-alumni interface and focus on human dimensions in business while connecting business with society gives it competitive advantages, the management claims. Traditionally, it focuses on experiential learning and immersion programmes, which are embedded in the curriculum, through innovative and unique pedagogy to include industry experts along with core faculty to match with evolving technology and XIM UNIVERSITY: ADOPTING TECH, MOVING FORWARD By Abhishek Sharma "New Bloomberg Labs have been created and new courses have been introduced, such as Design Thinking for Managers. 106 | B W BUSINESSWORLD | 16 December 2023 ing. XIM has started new programmes to meet the requirements of a post-pandemic scenario. Its programmes are designed to bridge the gap between academia and industry and between theory and practice. XIM University has always responded to the emerging order in the world of business and to tech-led Industrial Revolution 4.0 by focusing on data analytics, the internet of things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), deep learning, machine learning (ML), cloud computing and many more. VC Uvari tells BW Businessworld, “New Bloomberg Labs have been created and new courses have been introduced, such as Design Thinking for Managers. We have also set up a school of Computer Science and Engineering to promote and encourage cross-functional learning, pedagogy and research within XIM University to develop emerging skills and career paths in the digital era.” Experts pitch that universities and institutes must realign their curriculum and academic delivery to the new and emerging phase of industrialisation, industry 5.0, that requires humans working alongside advanced technology and AI-powered devices to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of workplace processes. A Win-win Situation As tech rises more, AI-led e-learning solutions are expected to assist professors in bridging the knowledge gap between their lectures and generating low-storage study materials and other lessons in digital format. This way, students and experts can leverage the entire study material without taking up much space in the system. AI-powered algorithms can gather data on student behaviour, such as how long they spend on certain tasks, what types of questions they struggle with and how they interact with learning and reading materials. This data can be used to identify patterns and trends that can help improve teaching methods and curriculum design. “With the ability to analyse data on student performance and preferences, AI can help educators create customised lesson plans and assessments that align with each student’s unique strengths and weaknesses. This can improve student engagement and motivation and ultimately lead to better academic outcomes,” concludes Uvari. “As the new-age workplace demands critical thinking, communication, problem-solving, creativity, multi-disciplinary capability and sustainability, XIM University focuses on developing creative leaders of tomorrow with intellectual curiosity and the spirit of service with ethical compass” market dynamics. Despite the unprecedented challenges posed in recent times, XIM University responded quickly and securely to the industry needs and XIM was made a happy hunting ground for the corporates and prospective recruiters. Academic governance and admission processes continued uninterrupted. Notably, the quick adoption of technology in digital teaching-learning and governance as a part of new-age work practices in XIM was underpinned by the adoption of key practices and behaviour as a roadmap to succeed in the new digital age. Bikram K. Bahinipati, Chairperson - Admissions, XIM University says that the critical perspective of management education is to empower and inspire the students to become enterprising and creative innovators and change agents. “As the new-age workplace demands critical thinking, communication, problem-solving, creativity, multi-disciplinary capability and sustainability, XIM University focuses on developing creative leaders of tomorrow with intellectual curiosity and the spirit of service with ethical compass,” Bahinipati comments. 108 | B W BUSINESSWORLD | 16 December 2023 Narayani Ramachandran, Director, SVKM’s Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS), Bengaluru, highlights the challenges being faced by management institutions and the solutions they have to offer; she also elaborates on NEP’s implementation and infrastructure upgradation How is NEP 2020 being implemented in the institution? The implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) on our campus was relatively smooth. Many of the recommendations outlined in the NEP were already an integral part of our educational framework. For instance, strong industry involvement. Moreover, in addition to the regular curriculum, our students also engage in multiple live projects across various domains, which provide them with experiential learning opportunities. This aligns with the NEP’s emphasis on practical learning. We also ensure that a significant portion of every course is taught through guest lectures. Apart from having strong industry connections, we are also associated with professional industry bodies, such as the CFA Institute Research Foundation and SIMA. In the context of our School of Law, we maintain close ties with lawyers through the Lawyers’ Roundtable Association. These collaborations with professional organisations vindicate our efforts to align with the NEP’s recommendations. What are the biggest challenges before B-schools today and what solutions would you suggest? One of the major challenges in front of B-schools EMPHASIS ON PRACTICAL LEARNING “Companies today are looking for graduates with a multicultural mindset - individuals who can seamlessly interact with people from diverse backgrounds, breaking barriers, practising inclusiveness and addressing unconscious biases” By Upasana is the need to keep in step with the ever-evolving industry demands. To do that, one is required to have a long-term perspective. Besides, being in the midst of a proliferation of business schools, there needs to be a concerted effort to remain authentic and true to one’s unique identity. Moreover, we should also be prepared for the demands for substantial allocation of resources to meet the diverse needs and expectations of students. What is the current thrust area at the institution and what have been some major changes B-SCHOOL SPECIAL DIRECTOR SPEAK
16 December 2023 | B W BUSINESSWORLD | 109 Academic excellence: Our goal is to establish NMIMS as a recognised centre of academic excellence and become the most preferred institution of learning. Aligning stakeholders: We work to align with stakeholders and meet their aspirations to create a thriving ecosystem. Regarding significant changes in infrastructure, there have been noteworthy advancements in three key aspects. While our physical infrastructure is state-of-the-art and our campus is well-maintained, we have also invested in soft infrastructure. We not only possess these resources but also effectively utilise them to enhance the learning experience. When it comes to faculty, our institution boasts a unique combination of academic and industry experience. How will AI impact management education and what is your institute’s approach to disruptive technologies? We have wholeheartedly embraced technology and harbour no apprehensions about its impact. In fact, we leverage technology to our advantage. Currently, we have identified and incorporated around 21 AI tools into our educational framework and it’s worth noting that approximately 15 to 16 of these tools are freely accessible. One of the prominent AI tools we employ is ChatGPT. Our approach to disruptive technologies, particularly AI, is based on training our students to utilise these tools in a structured and ethical manner. We emphasise the importance of crediting the AI tools used in their work and teaching responsible and accountable usage. What are the changing expectations of the corporate industry and how are you meeting those expectations? The current expectations of the corporate world require students to become agile learners. So, through our curriculum and pedagogy, we encourage our students to stay ahead when it comes to adaptability and learnability. Companies today are also looking for graduates with a multicultural mindset - individuals who can seamlessly interact with people from diverse backgrounds, breaking barriers, practising inclusiveness and addressing unconscious biases. We are committed to raising awareness and promoting inclusiveness and diversity among our students. relating to infrastructure, faculty recruitment and curriculum revamp? The current thrust area at the institution centres around knowledge creation and the pursuit of excellence. This is achieved by aligning the interests of all stakeholders, including corporate partners, the business world, students, faculty and employees. Our approach is based on four fundamental pillars: Knowledge creation: We emphasise the creation of relevant and applied knowledge that addresses the unknown, showcases leadership and fulfils society’s expectations. Enhancing teaching and learning: We focus on improving teaching and learning through our ‘Assurance of Learning’ System.
110 | B W BUSINESSWORLD | 16 December 2023 Srinivasan R Iyengar, Director, Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS), University of Mumbai, on the changing curriculum and pedagogy of management education specially in the light of artificial intelligence In recent years, the progress of artificial intelligence (AI) has greatly changed people’s work and lifestyle and AI has appeared in various fields, bringing great convenience to people and has been widely used in the field of management education too. AI has often been discussed as a harbinger of an unprecedented wave of automation, thereby shifting the distribution of labour among occupations and industries and reshaping future jobs. “AI has led many to believe that AI will soon outthink humans. AI should not replace school leaders in making decisions as leaders’ moral values cannot be easily encoded in data. AI is not a plug-and-play technology with immediate returns in business schools. If school leaders allow the value of data to override the value of the people whom the leaders serve, then the leaders justify replacing themselves with robot leaders who endow AI with all decision-making power,” shares Srinivasan R Iyengar, Director, Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, University of Mumbai. Industries consider individuals with professional work experience to have better hard and soft skills, greater career focus and higher capability to adjust themselves in an organisation. “The employment market not only demands graduates with a high level of academic knowledge, but also seeks in them core competencies essential to succeed in the work environment. However, there often is a gap between the academic preparation AI: HARBINGER OF UNPRECEDENTED WAVE OF AUTOMATION “Creativity, collaboration, persuasion, time management, adaptability and emotional intelligence are few of the most demanded soft skills” By Upasana at institutes and the competencies and skills required in the industry,” underlines Iyengar on changing expectations of corporate world. JBIMS internship programmes developed through an industry-academia collaboration would be more relevant and connect theories to workplace realities. The key factors to having a good internship experience are expectation of gaining practical exposure; good long-term relationships with the company; guidance from faculty member from respective companies and internship meeting interns’ curriculum requirements. Students get a bird’s eye view of the various aspects of working in a particular industry or a job role. Internships boost self-confidence, selfesteem and interpersonal skills. B-SCHOOL SPECIAL DIRECTOR SPEAK
16 December 2023 | B W BUSINESSWORLD | 111 institution, JBIMS will be capable of delivering knowledge and skills, producing excellent graduates because of the blend of regular and guest faculty members. “We have over 100 visiting faculties representing from leading corporates with rich experience of industry and academia. We engage most of our alumni for teaching and mentoring students. We witnessed good investments for renovating buildings, classrooms, library,” states Iyengar updating about the infrastructural development at the institution. Maharashtra government implemented NEP in June 2023 with the four-year undergraduate degree. JBIMS is an autonomous institute, affiliated to University of Mumbai. The university has established the task force, working groups and committees dedicated to the effective implementation of NEP. University committees are preparing an institute development policy, curriculum development, teachers training, technology integration and policy implementation. All graduate, science and arts programmes have started implementing NEP 2020. JBIMS has implemented NEP in MSc Finance programme from this academic year onwards. Students are increasingly attuned to global issues such as climate change, social justice and pandemic preparedness. They seek educational institutions that address these concerns and offer opportunities for engagement and impact. “In my nearly 25 years of teaching, I have seen a recent change in the kind of students that business schools draw. Management students are concerned about the mounting threats of climate change, income inequality, healthcare and more. They want to learn the essentials of running successful businesses. Revamping the business curriculum is a major undertaking,” Iyengar believes. “The idea, rather than teaching management as simply a precise science, is to bring in a bit of the liberal arts. Rather than trying to ‘teach’ ethics to fully grown adults, the goal should be to help students examine their own ethics and values to help students develop wisdom,” he goes on to say. By incorporating subjects like data analytics and its applications, leadership skills training, executive coaching and disruptive business models, business schools can teach contemporary skills that will support students immediately after graduation. Now days, there is a shift from imparting mere basic management skills to multi-skills in an integrated manner. In this context, the workshops, guest lectures and exposure to live projects would help college students in improving non-technical skills demanded by industry and making them industry ready from the entry-level worker to the senior-most positions. Creativity, collaboration, persuasion, time management, adaptability and emotional intelligence are few of the most demanded soft skills. In the current competitive environment, a knowledge-based economy plays an imperative role in higher education institutions. As a learning
112 | B W BUSINESSWORLD | 16 December 2023 Raman Ramachandran, Director, KJ Somaiya Institute of Management, on AI’s impact on management education How will AI impact management education and what is your institute’s approach to disruptive technologies? AI and GenAI is a reality and will disrupt and transform a wide range of industries. Most skills are likely to be redundant by the time students graduate from a course. According to World Economic Forum, one in four jobs are set to change in the next five years. In this context as a B-school, we are evaluating how to embrace these technologies in the classroom to accelerate the rate of learning while also making students aware of potential limitations and societal impact of these tools. The key is to help students learn to see and use these as collaborative tools to improve efficiency and effectiveness and not as a substitute. GenAI tools have enormous potential to facilitate self-learning, customised to individual’s learning pace on diverse topics, from improving their cognitive ability to virtual internships where they would gain practical experience of a job profile. What is the current thrust area at the institution and what have been some significant changes in terms of infrastructure, faculty recruitment and curriculum revamp? We have recently articulated KJ Somaiya Institute of Management’s purpose, ‘Together we enable transformation journeys of individuals “AI IS A REALITY” “Management is perhaps one of the most important innovations of humankind and many principles of management will continue to be relevant despite the digital and other technological disruptions” By Upasana to value-based and purpose-driven leaders for building a better world’. The stated purpose together with our values - integrity, excellence, curiosity, collaborative and humility, is the basis for all the change initiatives at the institute. Our revamped curriculum will ensure our graduates are ‘day-1 ready’, having a balance of ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ skills while having a noncompromising attitude to ‘values’ and a deep understanding of subjects that are likely to be disruptive and transformative in their careers such as sustainability, net zero, climate change and Gen AI. To meet these objectives, we have reduced classroom sessions and substituted it with experiential learning through live projects, summer internships and capstone projects. 114 | B W BUSINESSWORLD | 16 December 2023 to be relevant while specialising with current industry relevant skills and practices. What are the biggest challenges before B-schools today and what solutions would you suggest? Management is perhaps one of the most important innovations of humankind and many principles of management will continue to be relevant despite the digital and other technological disruptions. B-schools must take these big tectonic shifts and disruptions that are happening and redesign their programmes to meet both the student and the industry needs. If B-schools fail to do this through sufficient retraining of their faculty and redesigning of their programmes, there is a risk of being irrelevant. What are the changing aspirations of students, what experience do they want while at B-school and how are you meeting those aspirations? Students look at management education from a placement perspective with a salary that provides adequate return on their investment. Consequently, there is often a mismatch between their aptitude, understanding of job profile and the offer that they take up. This leads to early attrition which is a cause for concern, both for the students and the recruiters. We have a track record of nearly 100 per cent placement but continue to invest to ensure that students are placed on jobs that meet their strengths and aspirations. We are also helping students to recognise that B-school degree is the beginning of their transformational journey and offering tools so they recognise their competency profile early and plan their career to leverage their strengths. [email protected] What are the changing expectations of the corporate world and industry and how are you meeting those expectations? Our specific research in India and research from across the world indicates that industry expects MBA graduates to have functional competency, technology orientation with high levels of soft skills. The corporate world wants employees who are agile, resilient and willing to continue with the organisation for an extended period. To meet these expectations, we have restructured our programmes from sector specific programmes (MBA in Retail Management, Financial Services, Integrated Marketing Communications, International Business, HR and Data Science & Analytics) to programmes where the first year is devoted to foundational subjects and in the second year students opt to do a major in disciplines such as Finance, Marketing, Data Science & Analytics, HR, Operations and also choose a minor that would complement their area of specialisation. With this, students get a deep understanding of the principles of management that will continue B-SCHOOL SPECIAL DIRECTOR SPEAK

BIMTECH is a leading niche B-school which is driven by its vision of ‘developing responsible leaders with an entrepreneurial mindset and striving for sustainability’. Our current thrust area is to position our institute as a leading research and teaching institution in management discipline. Our name includes technology, which nudges us to adopt technology in various spheres of our activities on a continuous basis. This includes curriculum redesign, adding technology and skill oriented courses such as Emerging Technology, Business Transformation, Industry 4.0, etc. We are well aware that technology is a major disruptor as well as enabler for all businesses. Accordingly, our students, who are going to be the future managers, need to be ingrained with a solid technology foundation and its business applications so that they can be productive from day one. In the last three years, we have upgraded infrastructure by adding a complete new floor to our academic block, building two new modern computer labs and enhancing IT facilities in all our offices, classrooms and support infrastructure. It received AICTE accreditation for its PDGM course in 1989. Director Durga Prasad lists out education, research and community engagement as priority areas for the institute. Prasad says that the desired graduate outcomes for the institute are very clear. These are leadership, initiative and problem-solving skills, technological literacy, lifelong learning, global citizenship, cultural awareness and ethics. To achieve these attributes, the institute is focusing on flexible and customised learning, internationalisation, leadership development and enhanced industry interface. To ensure that the institute is aligned to industry expectations, TAPMI invites industry leaders as part of ‘Director’s Roundtable’. Through the discussions, the key expectations that have been identified are digital prowess, analytical rigour, leadership and communication skills. Yet another expectation is cultural fit and the recruiters, when they come to campus, also assess this aspect, informs the director. “To bridge the gap between the classroom and the company, we run industry immersion programmes wherein the industry visits us, and our students visit the industry. Accordingly, we restructure the curriculum,” says Prasad. At the same time, the institute is also cognizant of what students want today. The institute provides feasible solutions to them. “We run a credited course called SEVA (Sustainability, Environment, Values and Attitude), wherein students work with local MSMEs and community to come up with solutions.” The course, according to the institute’s website, looks at “increasing the core competency of students to understand sustainability in business, conducting responsible businesses, and the processes of ethical business management.” Preparedness For Global Issues The director talks about the leadership attributes that the institute is nurturing on environmental and larger social issues, besides just corporate leadership. “We have a one-year programme on leadership development assessment, in which we look at leadership capabilities of a particular student. Depending upon his potential, we develop his potential, especially in sustainability area. In fact, our objective is to touch one lakh lives over the next 10 years.” For a better global understanding, including geopolitical and economic, TAPMI is running a course on international business to help students understand the political and economic issues in a systematic way. And the institute is planning to start a course on culture and business to sensitise students regarding the cultural differences between various geographical regions that are critical elements in business today. Challenges Acquisition and retention of talent is the biggest challenge for B-schools. Prasad suggests giving the faculty flexibility along with commensurate pay packages as the panacea. “We encourage the faculty to visit industry to provide solutions to industry problems,” he says. He also points to the challenge that Indian Bschools must prepare for – entry of international B-schools on Indian soil. This competition will improve the quality of B-schools, including quality of teaching and infrastructure. [email protected]

124 | B W BUSINESSWORLD | 16 December 2023 IIM Nagpur, a third-generation IIM, exudes freshness of ideas and energy that makes the campus a dynamic learning place. Bhimaraya Metri, Director delves into some key initiatives Teaching, training, research and consultancy are the four pillars of a holistic B-school and IIM Nagpur, the 14th IIM that was set up in 2015, has done remarkably on all these fronts. The institute has earned its reputation as the fastest-growing Bschool. To begin with, we have built world-class infrastructure, with an inspiring ecosystem. From honouring the legacy of great leaders like APJ Abdul Kalam, Baba Amte and JRD Tata to providing all modern amenities, we have it all on the campus. While developing the campus, we built the infrastructure and developed horticulture simultaneously. We have also recruited best of the best faculty. We went for hiring associate professors and professors. They would be the best faculty from all B-schools, rather than faculty from the best B-schools. There is a distinct difference between the two, as the best institutes do not always have the best faculty. The institute, in order to attract cream students, offers 20 full scholarships (except mess fee). Of these, 10 are for high scorers in CAT and 10 for deserving-cum-needy students. A Nagpur-based company has come forward to offer a scholarship. New-age programmes We are also focusing on our executive education, and among all the second and new generation IIMs, totalling 15, we lead in terms of revenue generation, having earned Rs 30 crore. We became pioneers in starting a programme in cyber security “OUR STUDENTS LEARN TO SEE THINGS FROM DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES” B-SCHOOL SPECIAL DIRECTOR SPEAK and data science, and blockchain. Besides, we have launched senior management programmes in project management, supply chain management, logistics management and marketing analytics. These programmes not only generated revenue for the institute but also created a huge alumni base. We have also forged bonds with organisations like Indian Oil Corporation, Larsen & Toubro, HPCL, Coal India, Bosch India and Maharashtra Forest Development Corporation for consultancy work. Executive education and consultancy are extremely important for a B-school because the knowledge that we generate as part of both these engagements is pumped back into the MBA programme. Holistic approach At the same time, we have revised our curriculum keeping the National Education Policy in mind.

We were given the responsibility of Maharashtra and Sikkim and we successfully completed that two-year programme on October 31. We have been given funding of Rs 10 crore by the Government of India for Atal Innovation Centre, and Startup India seed fund and a ‘fellowship of entrepreneurship in residence’ from the Department of Science and Technology, GOI. We have been recognised as a centre of excellence by the Government of Maharashtra for agricultural marketing as part of a project with the Asian Development Bank. As part of this project, we train the farmers, producer organisations and technical partners in marketing of agri-produce. International Exposure Another initiative of ours is ‘international week’. During December, to coincide with the Christmas holidays, we invite faculty from international universities who are visiting India to take a credit course. This helps students in cross-cultural understanding. We also have international tie-ups with eight universities across the globe, including a dual degree arrangement with the University of Lille, France. We provide students the opportunity to go for immersion programmes in countries like Singapore, Japan, Korea and the UAE. As told to Meha Mathur We called over 16 academicians and industry leaders for their advice. In a new course that we have launched, i.e professional management practice, we involve students to identify some important leadership traits, the areas where they are strong and weak, respectively. And we have identified 50-odd mentors from the industry to help students improve upon the areas of weakness. The students are also sent for ‘Bharat Darshan’, which is essentially rural immersion. To become a great decision-maker, they need to know the rural reality too. From this year we are introducing new courses like ‘science of happiness’ and ‘changemasters of India’. We also teach ‘Indian ethos and business ethics’ and ‘life management’ which is taken by Gauranga Das. Another element we have introduced is ‘human library’. We invite industry leaders who have authored books to the campus for a reading and interaction session with students. All these courses enable a holistic growth, and students learn to see things from different perspectives. Engaging With Government We are also doing advocacy with the government and have a Chief Minister Fellowship with the Government of Maharashtra. We identify young minds, train them, and they are then placed in various ministries of the state government, working in public policy. IIM Udaipur has taken its place among the top global B-schools by receiving accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. IIM Udaipur was recently ranked 16th by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Rankings 2023 of the HRD ministry. As IIM Udaipur is focused on top-class research, attracting faculty of high calibre has always been a challenge. However, IIM Udaipur has so far been able to hire highly motivated and research-focused faculty. The institute does not have a huge corpus and thus it has less financial flexibility. The institute is adopting innovative means to expand its physical infrastructure. It is trying to increase the proportion of international students and faculty. But it is easier said than done. What is the impact of disruptive technologies on the campus and what is your approach towards these technologies? Disruptive technologies are having a significant impact on educational institutions, including campus life and the overall learning experience. These technologies have brought about various changes. Disruptive technologies have facilitated the adoption of blended learning, which combines in-person and online instruction. This has made education more accessible and flexible, allowing Ashok Banerjee, Director, IIM Udaipur, explains how new-age IIMs have an edge over older IIMs in terms of incorporating innovative pedagogy and technology-driven approaches What is it that new-age IIMs can do that established IIMs find it difficult to carry out? Newer Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) have certain advantages and opportunities compared to the more established IIMs. Some of the things that newer IIMs can do easily or differently are as follows: newer IIMs have the advantage of designing their curricula with a fresh perspective and they can adapt more quickly to changing industry needs and global business trends; these IIMs can explore innovative teaching methods and technology-driven approaches to education; they can incorporate online learning, simulation-based courses and interdisciplinary studies to better prepare students for the evolving business landscape. Newer IIMs often have a less bureaucratic decision-making process, which allows them to respond more swiftly to changing circumstances and student feedback. These IIMs can have a stronger emphasis on research to establish their academic reputation. They can allocate resources and build research capabilities more effectively from the outset. Being newer institutions, these IIMs might have a more international and globally oriented outlook, allowing them to foster international collaborations, faculty exchanges and student studyabroad programmes more easily. What has been the journey of the institute like and what have been the challenges? The institute had its temporary campus at the National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli. “It is time to express gratitude that NIT Tiruchirappalli gave all the required support as a caring host during 2011 to 2017. IIM Tiruchirappalli shifted to its own permanent campus spread over 175 acres, and conveniently situated just 10 km south of the international airport at Tiruchirappalli. The institute began its journey from admitting 60-plus students in 2011 in its flagship programme, the size of which has increased to 360 in 2022,” says Pawan Kumar Singh, Director, IIM Tiruchirappalli, underlining the journey of the institute and the challenges faced. “The institute started the MBA programme in Human Resource Management with an intake capacity of 50 in the year 2020. These programmes are aimed to help managerial and leadership capabilities reaching to the far corners of the country. However, as Covid hit our regular programmes badly, we responded to the whole situation in a wholesome manner, especially in responding to various failures of Covid, we made provisions for online classes, hybrid classes, proctoring system etc. to tackle the situation,” states Singh, opening up on the impact of disruptive technologies on the campus and the institute’s approach towards these technologies. “Our varied mix of pedagogy leading to effective

On the expectations of industry from management education and how the institute is meeting those expectations, Singh says, “On the whole, there is no incongruence between the goals of various institutes of management and the expectations of industry from management education. The institute wants to create worthy future leaders and industries expect industry-ready graduates from management institutes. Our institute takes care of all aspects including quality management education, creating skills for effective managerial capacity and leadership providing value based and socially relevant insights and education that is sensible to micro, macro and international perspectives.” “In order to make students industry-sensitive, the interaction between industry practitioners and students are arranged regularly. Industry project is an essential feature of our educational system,” he adds. Talking about students’ aspirations and the change in their focus towards startups and entrepreneurship rather than taking up corporate jobs, Singh states, “The institute prepares the capacity of the students so that they may choose career and life as per their choice. 136 | B W BUSINESSWORLD | 16 December 2023 Nagarajan Ramamoorthy, Director, IIM Amritsar, on how the institute not only embraced technology but also the hardships that came during the pandemic and evolved in new and innovative ways in order to excel As a third-generation IIM, what is your approach to establishing your credentials and making a mark in the community of B-schools? We are doing very well. We follow the same pedagogy as other IIMs and we draw from the same port and there is a demand for management education in this country. Since I took over five years ago, the number of students increased from 250 to 750 now. Next year, this number will go up to 800-850. During the same period, we also added several new programmes. For example, in the Ph.D programme, we added an MBA in Business Analytics because science and analytics are in demand. We also added an Executive MBA programme for which classes are held on weekends. There is a campus visit once or twice in each of the three years. The curriculum is very closely aligned with the regular MBA curriculum. The average or minimum work experience of these students ranges anywhere from five years to 25 years. This programme allows people to enhance their careers without giving up their jobs. I believe the marketplace is the best indicator of the quality of the programme or the quality of products. So, each year, we have attracted top brands for campus recruitment. What have been the challenges in this journey and how has the institute overcome those? I took over in July 2019 and within five to six months, the pandemic struck. For nearly 18 months, we all came to a standstill in terms of coming to the office and performing other official functions. As I had been in the US for 30 years, I was very well accusEMBRACING CHANGE & CHALLENGES B-SCHOOL SPECIAL DIRECTOR SPEAK By Shruti Tripathi
138 | B W BUSINESSWORLD | 16 December 2023 agement education? See, any technology has both pros and cons. I do not think that we can blame the technology for what it is. Even the people who invented those technologies are creative. There is no substitute for human capacity or human mind. I don’t consider a man to be a threat to any type of education. The biggest challenge is how we can integrate those types of analytical tools and automatic intelligence into our curriculum. Ultimately, it is a decision-maker who has to take responsibility and accountability for his or her own actions. We find innovative ways of assessing the learning of the students where we can possibly remove the component of technology, but effectively we can integrate technology into our curriculum. What are the locational benefits of your institute, and what impact has the institute created in the region? I believe every institution has a duty to contribute to the local community. For example, a couple of years ago, our students and faculty worked with a district service centre, streamlining some of the processes where we studied the process and then showed them things such as applications for various services that the government provides. The institution has lots of clubs and activities. Many of these clubs interact with the local community and various NGOs to help them. From an economic point of view, I can confidently say that although we have not done an impact study directly per se based on my experience in the US and elsewhere, there is a huge amount of economic development for the local community in terms of entrepreneurship and development of small businesses. What we do today is going to be much more impactful in the longer run. [email protected] “I do not think students come to IIM because of the physical infrastructure alone but because of its institutional reputation that is built on the quality of faculty” tomed to the online or virtual learning model and that helped me to mentor and guide the students. The second challenge we faced was in terms of the shift. The pandemic started in March 2020 and by October or November, we shifted to offline mode. From November 2020 to March 2021, we continued in the offline mode, with all the students back on campus without any disruptions. What are the advantages of being a new institute? I think as a director, when we start a new institution, we are able to follow some of the cutting-edge practices. There is not a complete legacy that we have to undo and unravel. So, one big advantage I had was in terms of setting up some of the practices including the curriculum modes, mode of operations, and the type of culture that we create both with faculty and non-teaching staff and everyone, those were the positives. I do not think students come to IIM because of the physical infrastructure alone but because of the reputation that is built on the quality of faculty. 140 | B W BUSINESSWORLD | 16 December 2023 B. S. Sahay, Director, Indian Institute of Management Jammu, discusses the unique aspects of the institution, its focus on creating leaders and entrepreneurs, the challenges it has overcome, and more What are the USPs of IIM Jammu that give it an edge in management education? How has it established its reputation as one of the foremost management institutions in the country today? Our vision is to produce leaders and entrepreneurs. Today’s world requires not only managers but also entrepreneurs. We want our graduates to start their own startups and offer jobs, positioning them as job creators rather than job seekers. At IIM Jammu, students’ profiles have evolved with a focus on creating entrepreneurs. Despite being the youngest IIM, we have consistently been ranked higher by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). We completed our campus in record time and have a strong focus on creating entrepreneurs. We’ve also began collaborations with institutes like IIT Jammu and AIIMS Jammu for dual-degree programmes. IIM Jammu has several distinctive features. One key aspect is our focus on holistic education. We not only provide high-quality academic learning but also emphasise practical exposure through industry collaborations and projects. The beautiful and serene campus location is another advantage, providing a pollution-free environment conducive to learning and innovation. Additionally, our commitment to diversity, industry interaction, and community engagement sets us apart. “OUR VISION IS TO PRODUCE LEADERS & ENTREPRENEURS” B-SCHOOL SPECIAL DIRECTOR SPEAK By Poonam Singh What are the key challenges that B-schools are facing today and how would you tackle them? Challenges are an inherent part of life. We have transformed challenges into opportunities, focusing on transparency, inclusivity and societal impact. We’ve initiated unique programmes like the Centre for Diversity and Inclusion, Business Accelerator Programme and centres for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Also, we have introduced a programme like MBA in hospital administration and healthcare management, adapting to the changing needs of the industry.

142 | B W BUSINESSWORLD | 16 December 2023 B-SCHOOL SPECIAL DIRECTOR SPEAK to introduce the ‘Professor of Practice’ role and how it is positively impacting the students? The idea is to bring in professionals from diverse fields who are also pursuing Ph.D. This approach addresses the shortage of faculty. Also, we offer a hybrid mode for working professionals pursuing Ph.D, allowing them to attend classes online. Could you elaborate on the unique initiatives taken by IIM Jammu to promote sustainability and environmental consciousness on the campus as well as surrounding communities? We have adopted five government schools and are actively involved in various initiatives to support them. Moreover, we are expanding our outreach to include villages surrounding the campus, focusing on government schools and colleges. Our goal is to contribute to the holistic development of these areas. The emphasis on sustainability is evident in our efforts to create a green campus, utilising the natural beauty of the location and ensuring a positive impact on the environment. How has technology and the increasing role of AI impacted education at IIM Jammu? Technology, including AI, is a significant enabler in education. We recognise its importance and strive to keep pace with technological advancements. While we embrace hybrid learning models, we still emphasise the importance of in-person interaction with industry experts. The key is to strike a balance, leveraging technology for efficiency while maintaining the human touch in education. Our approach is to adapt and integrate technology without isolating ourselves from its benefits. What advice would you give to educational leaders and aspiring students? For educational leaders, my advice is to embrace disruptions, constantly innovate, and focus on delivering high-quality education. Stay attuned to global trends, leverage technology judiciously, and foster a culture of continuous improvement. For aspiring students, my advice is to be open to change, actively seek practical exposure, and choose institutions with a strong track record of quality education and research. Education is a lifelong journey, and the ability to adapt and learn continuously will be key to success. This approach ensures that students not only grasp theoretical concepts but also understand their practical applications. We also introduced the position of ‘professor of practice’, bringing in experts from diverse fields, including industry, bureaucracy, and armed forces, to enhance students’ understanding and applicability of knowledge. You’ve taken a unique approach by having industry experts contribute significantly to the curriculum. Can you elaborate on the decision Photograph courtesy: IIM Jammu Photograph courtesy: IIM Jammu

144 | B W BUSINESSWORLD | 16 December 2023 Ram Kumar Kakani, Director, IIM Raipur, on the industry’s expectations from management studies and how the institute meets those expectations New-age IIMs possess a unique advantage over established IIMs by virtue of their position in the trajectory of institutional development. The older IIMs, through years of hard work, have meticulously laid the foundation and built a formidable brand image. The new IIMs, in this context, are bestowed with the privilege of leveraging this established brand to propel themselves forward. This advantage, however, doesn’t merely manifest as an inheritance of reputation; it translates into a strategic edge. The second-generation IIMs have the flexibility and agility that larger, more established organisations often find challenging to emulate. “Unlike traditional structures with ingrained bureaucracies, we can adopt differentiation strategies swiftly. The physical infrastructure of older IIMs can pose constraints. Limited space and resistance to change can hinder the implementation of innovative ideas. In contrast, new IIMs have the opportunity to create a conducive environment from the ground up. In essence, while we acknowledge and respect the legacy of older IIMs, the advantage lies in our ability to be nimble, innovative and unencumbered by historical baggage,” says Ram Kumar Kakani, Director, IIM Raipur. Industry Expectations Speaking about the expectations of industry from B-schools, Kakani states, “We meet industry expectations from management education by actively engaging with industry stakeholders. We gain a deep understanding of their needs through CONVERSATIONS AND INTERACTIONS continuous conversations and interactions. This insight allows us to integrate relevant content into our courses, pedagogy, workshops and seminars. For instance, when industry partners demanded sessions on public-private partnerships (PPP) or social infrastructure, we promptly organised workshops to address those specific needs.” Thanks to Kakani’s predecessors (B.S. Sahay and Bharat Bhaskar), IIM Raipur in its first 12 years transitioned from a newborn to a robust and healthy infant. “Now, we find ourselves on the cusp of adolescence in the realm of higher education,” says Kakani. Despite being a newcomer, IIM Raipur has emerged as the highest ranked second-generation IIM and the most sought-after institution. Overcoming the challenges of being in “In today’s aspirational society, students’ career aspirations reflect the dynamism of a developing nation; they are eager to capitalise on the opportunities of the current era and contribute to India’s growth” B-SCHOOL SPECIAL DIRECTOR SPEAK By Upasana
146 | B W BUSINESSWORLD | 16 December 2023 educational objectives. In today’s aspirational society, the students’ career aspirations reflect the dynamism of a developing nation. They are eager to capitalise on the opportunities of the current era and contribute to India’s growth. Notably, there is a discernible shift towards startups, with students interested in internships and assignments in the startup ecosystem. For instance, startups like Eco Soul have welcomed interns from IIM Raipur, showcasing their willingness to engage in entrepreneurial endeavours. Evolving Professional Landscape Moreover, the modern generation exhibits remarkable flexibility, moving away from the traditional preference for jobs with fixed working hours. They are open to stretching themselves, embracing challenges and reaping the benefits of their efforts. This adaptability reflects a positive trend towards a more dynamic and responsive workforce, aligning with the evolving professional landscape. “I’ve observed a dynamic shift in students’ aspirations reflecting the evolving landscape of the professional world. In today’s aspirational society, students are keenly attuned to the opportunities presented by India’s growth trajectory. The allure of contributing to the nation’s development during this transformative era is palpable,” says Kakani. A noteworthy trend is the changing focus on startups. While traditional corporate jobs continue to be sought after, students are interested in engaging with startups. This shift is marked by a willingness to explore internships and entrepreneurial opportunities within the startup ecosystem. In essence, the aspirations of our students reflect a desire for impactful contributions to a developing nation, and the increasing interest in startups signals a positive shift in the mindset of the modern business graduate. Impact Of New-age Technologies The impact of disruptive technologies at IIM Raipur has been two-fold. On one hand, there’s a noticeable trend among the younger generation to rely on shortcuts like Chat GPT, AI and ML, often leading to a more mechanical approach to decisionmaking, bypassing critical thinking. However, the institute recognised the significance of these technologies and adopted a positive direction. Rather than resisting change, the institute has embraced disruptive technologies, integrating them into the ecosystem for constructive purposes. The institute employs these technologies for scheduling and streamlining processes for greater efficiency. One notable application is in online learning, where audio-visual materials enhance educational experiences beyond the limitations of written content. The institute leverages disruptive technologies to their full potential, acknowledging that when used thoughtfully, they have the power to convey information more effectively than traditional methods. This approach emphasises the positive integration of these technologies, ensuring they contribute meaningfully to the B-SCHOOL SPECIAL DIRECTOR SPEAK

150 | B W BUSINESSWORLD | 16 December 2023 Vishal Khurma, CEO, Woxsen University, on how the institution has forged global partnerships to give students global perspective and industry partnerships to provide ready talent 2023 has been marked by buzz around AI. What is your approach towards AI? How is AI impacting management education? Currently, AI is a very dynamic technology, and over the next five to six years, it will continue to develop and impact our lives in entirely new ways. AI is helpful in custom learning for new-age learners. These days, students want to be taught using materials that are appropriate for their level of understanding, learning and comprehension rather than through pre-established modules. Faculty members can use AI to create daily lesson plans and determine how classroom sessions should be conducted. AI helps faculty save a lot of time. At Woxsen University, we have AI lab and Bloomberg lab, for students who are familiar with AI and wish to conduct experiments, analyse data using fundamental and technical AI indicators, work on assignments, create models or complete other tasks. How have the industry expectations changed? What are the recruiters seeking from passouts and how do you meet those expectations? India is facing a significant challenge in terms of the skilled talent available from higher education institutions. The last India Skills Report revealed “WE ARE SIGNING MOUs FOR CO-DESIGNING OF CURRICULUM” B-SCHOOL SPECIAL PERSPECTIVE “The university has launched a marketing campaign called ‘Be More’ to cater to students’ aspirations beyond an MBA degree. The campaign offers a variety of elective options and encourages students to engage in extracurricular activities” By Meha Mathur and Barkha Rawat that skilled talent available from higher education institutions is 50 per cent. The gross enrollment ratio is 26 per cent and 50 per cent are not even skilled, according to corporates. The problem is further complicated by the difference in understanding and requirements between corporates and education institutions. The two are on a different tangent altogether. With over 50,000 higher education institutions in the country, it is crucial to ensure that these institutions can provide the required skills for corporates.
