INTRODUCTION

ERMA FATIMA

DEFINITION OF

VETERAN
ARTIST

VETERAN ARTIST

A person who has a lot of A person who creates works of
experience in a particular area or art, especially paintings or
activity drawings

A veteran artist may simply be defined as someone who has a lot of expertise in the field of
performing, particularly in the Malaysian acting profession.P.Ramlee, Saloma, Dato Aziz
Satar, Nicholas Teo, and Sudirman Arshad are just a several of the Malaysian veteran artists
that specialise in works of art. Erma Fatima, on the other hand, is the artist chosen for this

assessment.

Fatimah binti Rahmad Ali is Erma Fatima's true name. She was born in Kuala Lumpur on
March 14, 1968. Erma Fatima made her first appearance in the field of art in 1987 with the
film Rozana Cinta 87. There are undoubtedly other films in which she has been, but her most
well-known work is in the drama Mak Cun, which premiered in 2014 and is still airing in

2018.

She was picked for this assessment because she is exceptionally gifted in the field of
filmmaking. She was noted for her direct and indirect involvement in the production of films,

dramas, and telefilms as a director, actress, and even writer.

ERMA FATIMA

CHAPTER 1

EARLY LIFE AND FAMILY

Fatimah binti Rahmad Ali was born in Kuala Lumpur on March 14, 1968. She has six siblings; her sister
Umie Aida is also an actress. She married Bade Hj. Azmi, a renowned film director, on November 30,
1991 and has five adopted children. The couple divorced officially on August 19, 2017.

He initially planned to be a lawyer, but his desire was dashed when he quit his second year of study to
pursue acting and received offers from several renowned film directors, including Dato 'Abdul Rahim
bin Mohd Razali. She admits that when she decided to discontinue her studies, her family was not
pleased, and erma fatima was slightly cleaned up as a result of the decision. However, after he won
several awards, he was re-accepted by his family.

She made her debut in 1987 with the film Rozana Cinta '87. She is consistent in all of her performances.

Jimi Asmara, starring Hani Mohsin, was his first directorial effort. He also created history by winning the
Best Director prize at South Korea's Seoul Film Festival. He continues to act and direct dramas and

feature films. Diva Popular, Tahajjud Cinta, Dejavu di Kinabalu, and Kau Yang Terindah are among his
directorial works.

CHAPTER 2

EDUCATION

Erma Fatima started her early education in primary school and secondary school. There is no specific location
or what school that she was admitted to but in one of her past interviews, she said that she went to primary and

secondary school. She once said that in her form 5, secondary school, her father still took care of her and
protected her so she would go to school driven by her father.

Usually, when someone enter the form 5, he or she will go to school by themselves but because Erma Fatima
was still a young lady at that time, so her father wanted her to be safe and another story is that even when she

is 17th years old, she mother will still bought clothes for her and the also take care the way she wears it.

Then, after she finished her secondary school, she got the opportunity to pursue her study in university and
the course that she chose was in law study. The university that she enrolled in was never clarified but she did
mention about pursuing her university study in law. But, in the Year 2 of law study, she ended up making a
decision to quit her study as she cannot balance her time with study and acting at the same time. During this
time, she got a bigger opportunity in the acting industry as a supporting role in the film “Rozana Cinta 87”.

So, she ended her study halfway to give one hundred percent commitment in the acting industry because she

gets the charms and attractiveness of acting that makes her want to focus more on it.

ERMA FATIMA

CHAPTER 3

EARLY CAREER

EARLY INVOLVEMENT

Erma Fatima, whose meteoric rise followed the New Malay's since the introduction of the National Economic
Policy (NEP, 1971–90) in certain ways. With industrialization, modernization, and the emergence of a wide Malay
middle class, the NEP years saw enormous migration from rural to urban areas for work. From supporting roles as

a good kampung girl-turned-prostitute to starring roles as heroine, feminist, and director of The Last Malay
Woman, to directing and producing big-budget government films like Embun (2002), and finally, briefly acting as
Chair of the Special Programmes Bureau of UMNO Puteri, Erma Fatima best embodies the Virginia Slims maxim,

'You've come a long way, baby’.

Her rise in popularity reflects the New Malay's socioeconomic and geographic developments. But, like the
famous commercial, has she come a long way? Even feminist sympathisers believe that she does women
filmmakers a disservice by being such a terrible role model, despite the fact that her success may be due to the
issues women in the mostly male Malay film business must deal with. Her brief connection with UMNO
Puteri was viewed as a bargain negotiated with the political higher-ups in order to finance her direction of the
production of Embun, and there have been claims of her lack of respect for scriptwriters' original works. It
was the most costly state-sponsored film at the time, costing RM3 million. Erma Fatima's brief foray into
politics may represent the fact that the film industry is not immune to the political patronage that afflicts
Malaysian culture and politics in general.

Some New Malays' economic success has been linked to patronage relationships with UMNO, according to
critics. Another critic changed the name of the pro-Malay strategy from Bumiputraism to UMNOputraism to
represent the party's hegemonic status during Mahathir's dictatorial reign. In Perempuan Melayu Terakhir
(1999), I will show how former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's developmentalism and moderate Islam
discourses cohere with her gender politics, and I will examine how UMNO-style nationalist feminism effects
a revisionist history in Embun (2002).

FILM CAREER

Erma Fatima (born Fatimah binti Rahmat in 1968) made her acting debut in the 1987 film Rozana Cinta '87
(Rozana Love), in which she played a lesbian from a wealthy family, an odd role that would become more
prevalent in 1990s films. Her characters progressed from innocent kampung girls corrupted by urban life into sex
workers (Bintang Malam, or Night Star, 1991; Hati Bukan Kristal, or Hearts Aren't Crystals, 1990), to journalist
(Fantasia, or Fantasy, 1993), to feminist young professional (Femina, 1994), to mention few of. She went on to
direct her debut film, Jimi Asmara (1995), about the life and career of singer Jimi Asmara, who was modeled after
R. Azmi and set in the late 1950s, before the birth of pop yah yeh (a musical genre prevalent in the 1960s and
based on Western pop songs of the time). The picture did not perform well at the box office, and Erma, possibly
seeing her flaws, moved to Indonesia to train with director Slamet Rahardjo in film production, directing, and

screenplay.

In her attempts to address sensitive topics like as homosexuality (Bulan dan Matahari, or Moon and Sun) and
Malaysia's treatment of immigrant workers (telemovie Jangan, or Don't), Erma has shown courage and sincerity.
She made Jangan (1997) after returning from Indonesia, but it was never shown on television due to its critique of
official duplicity. (The censors advised a few cuts before passing the picture, but Erma chose not to censor it in
order to preserve the work's integrity.) Despite its limited distribution, Jangan received the Best Telemovie award at
the Malaysian Film Festival that year.

The film raises concerns about the government's treatment of migrant workers, with ironic cuts to then-Deputy
Home Minister Megat Junid speaking at a press conference about crimes committed by immigrants, as if to
highlight the gap between what Homi Bhabha (1994) calls the pedagogical and the performative, or the state's
ideology and discourse and actual on-the-ground practices. Bulan Dan Matahari, her next film, was postponed in
2001 in order to make Embun, a big-budget nationalist historical picture (Dew). Bulan Dan Matahari is a film about
a professional man who marries to conceal his homosexuality.

Erma Fatima, like other filmmakers and actors in the country, makes a living by acting in the theater and on
television, as well as directing and producing films. 13 Female performers, she admits, 'tend to be forgotten' once
married in a business focused by youthful attractive looks. As a result, when she realized her acting career would be
compromised, she looked for alternatives that would allow her to have a long-term film career, eventually settling
on film producing and directing.

ERMA FATIMA

CHAPTER 4

RETIREMENT

Erma Fatima has not retired from the industry that she began in her career. It is because in 2021, she is still
involved in acting in drama on title diva popular. In this drama, she plays a character as Datuk Rona Di Alfonso Di
Al Bukhari. There are two versions of this drama which are diva popular and diva popular 2. In film, Erma Fatima
was last seen in the film Manisnya Cinta di Cappadocia, which was released in 2014. Erma Fatima appears as a
guest actress in this film. Ifti and her closest friend Dhivia (Rafidah Abdullah) are sent to Turkey by Datin Noor
(Erma Fatima) to find her home furniture. Bernard Chauly directed the comedy love film The Sweetness of Love in
Cappadocia. In 2016, Erma Fatima was involved in film Upin & Ipin: Jeng Jeng Jeng! such as the director for this
film.

In the early 2000s, Erma began directing Malay dramas to cover the gaps on television, with Mak Cun, the
narrative of a country lady who worked hard to realize her dreams of becoming a wealthy entrepreneur, being one
of the most outstanding. Erma is stepping into the world of entrepreneurship by launching a business branch,
marketing products from Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) such as food and handicrafts, as well as the new
Rumah Budaya 'Culture House' at the Kuala Lumpur Tower based on the Mak Cun character that was created. She
also wants to elevate Malaysian culture in the eyes of outsiders.

As a result, there are no plans to make a film on Erma Fatima soon. There has been
no recent information from Erma Fatima in the film's involvement since the last
film in 2014 as a guest actor, nor as the main actor. As the decade progressed,
Erma became more interested in directing Malay dramas for television networks.
Jimi Asmara and The Last Malaysian Girl are two of Erma Fatima's dramas.
Erma's motives aren't focused on all the actors because of the business she's been
conducting. Her motto also includes assisting entrepreneurs. She is still acting and
also doing business for her career.
