Where is Venice located?

Venice - capital of Veneto, is a small city, which is very unique in the world. Filled with charm
and mystery it carries the name City of Water due to its canals and lifestyle. In fact, the city is
built on 118 little islands in the center of the Venetian Lagoon and is crossed by hundreds of
canals. The number stops at around 150. Throughout the whole city not a single road can be
found, just canals – including the Grand Canal thoroughfare, lined with Renaissance and Gothic
palaces. The central square, Piazza San Marco, contains St. Mark’s Basilica, which is tiled with
Byzantine mosaics, and the Campanile bell tower offering views of the city’s red roofs. Venice
itself is in Southern Europe within Italy. It is boarded by the Tyrrhenian Sea, Ionian Sea, and
Adriatic Sea. Switzerland, France, Austria, and Slovenia are north of Italy. Venice itself is only
414.6 square kilometers in size. Compared to Italy, which is 301333 square kilometers large in
total, Venice only covers slightly more than one percent of Italy.

Geographically, Venice can be found on the map at 45.4408° N, 12.3155° E.

The creation of “Water City”

At the beginning, Venice was not what we know as Venice nowadays. Venice was founded
starting from the 5th century AD, which was the time when barbarians invaded. The inland
populations resolved to seek shelter. The Venetians therefore moves towards the lagoon, which
was composed by many little islands. It is now what we know as Venice. Venice Is composed by
around 120 islands connected purely by bridges.
You might be wondering how Venice formed. Im exactly here to tell you! From the beginning,
the weight of the city pushed down on the dirt and mud that it was built on, squeezing out
water and compacting the soil. This phenomenon, together with the natural movement of high
tides called “acqua alta” cause periodic flooding in the city, creating a sinking sensation. Now,
Venice is located northeastern within Italy, Europe.

Interesting Fact:
Venice is sinking at the alarming rate of 1 millimeter per year. Not only is it sinking, but it is also
tilting to the east and battling against flooding and rising sea levels. Venice is in northeast Italy
and was built on top of sediments from the Po River.

Why come to Venice?

Compared to every other city and tourist attraction, Venice is one of the only cities which are
largely surrounded by waters. Not only is that impressive, but humans have come around to
live with that. Lifestyles of people living there have already completely adapted and
transformed Venice. Venice is a famous tourist and industrial city in northeast Italy and the
capital of Veneto region. Venice was once the center of the Republic of Venice, known as the
"Pearl of the Adriatic Sea". Venice is a very romantic city just like Paris and many more.
However, Venice allows you to experience a completely different way of living. It's like entering
the world of waters. The door into that world is right there. The choice is in your hands. Why
not enter?

The city of Venice covers 118 man-made islands and an artificial peninsula adjacent to the
Venetian lagoon on the Adriatic Sea in northeast Italy, and 117 waterways crisscross each
other. This lagoon is distributed along the coastline between the Po and piawi rivers. Venice's
architecture, painting, sculpture, opera and so on have a very important position and influence
in the world. Venice has the reputation of "born of water, beautiful because of water, thriving
because of water", and enjoys the reputation of "water city" and "hundred island city". To
make the islands of the Venetian lagoon fit for habitation, Venice's early settlers needed to
drain areas of the lagoon, dig canals and shore up the banks to prepare them for building on.
On top of these stakes, they placed wooden platforms and then stone, and this is what the
buildings of Venice are built on. This is something no other city has. The history, culture and
everything about Venice is unique in a way which most people could never imagine.

Interesting fact:
When you hear "driving in Venice", what really being meant is "driving around Venice" because
there are no cars allowed in the city at all. With an intricate network of canals, there's no room
for passenger cars, so park your car and do all your sightseeing in downtown Venice on foot.

Locations to visit

The first location would be St. Mark's Basilica. It has been built in the 9th century but has been
rebuilt over the centuries. It serves as a showcase for the wealth which Venice has accumulated
as a military power. The design of St. Mark's Basilica mixes Byzantine and Gothic architecture
styles in a special way. Elaborate medieval mosaics cover much of the cathedral’s walls and
vaulting. Pala d’Oro which is a jewel adorned screen of gold is considered one of the finest
works of Byzantine craftsmanship in the world.

Another place that’s great to visit is the Grand Canal. It’s a great way to start an exploration in
Venice. Take a gondola ride down the grand canal, to explore a city where cars are banned.
Gondolas which serve as so called “water taxis”. Gondolas are primary sources of
transportation within Venice. The city’s aquatic thoroughfare snakes through the center of the
city from Saint Mark’s Basilica to the Church of Santa Chiara. Lined on either side by
Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance structures, the Grand Canal is crossed by four bridges,
the most famous of which is the 16th-century Rialto Bridge. The best time of the day for a
gondola ride is in the early morning when the canal shimmers with golden light.

The last place I would recommend would be Doge Palace. Doges used to rule the city like
royalty in the prosperous centuries in the Venetian Republic. The Palazzo Ducale was not only
the residence of the doge but the city’s center of power and its administrative hub as well. The
building was constructed in two phases. The eastern wing, which faces the Rio di Palazzo, was
built between 1301 and 1340. The western wing, facing the Piazetta San Marco, took an
additional 110 years to build and was completed in 1450. Visitors who take the Secret
Itineraries tour can also walk through hidden passageways to view the private council rooms,
torture chambers and the prison cell from which Giacomo Casanova made his escape in 1756.

Trading Connections of Venice and Italy

View on Ocean, Venice, Italy

Italy is a developed capitalist country which has one of the four major European economies. It
was one of the founding members for the European Union and the NATO, member of the
Schengen convention, the group of eight, the United Nations and much more. Italy has 55
UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and China ranks as the country with the largest number of world
heritage sites in the world. Italy is also a world leader in the field of art and fashion. Milan is the
economic and industrial center of Italy and the world's fashion capital while Venice was the
opening to most trading connections in the past and still till this day.
Venice has created a lot of trading connections and opportunities for Italy to trade with other
cities but also major countries. It played a major role in reopening the Mediterranean economy
to West European commerce and developed links with Northern Europe. Venice allowed the
institutional basis for commercial capitalism, shipping technology to be possible. Not only
these, but Venice also helped transfer Asian and Egyptian technology in cane sugar production
and processing, silk textiles, glassblowing and jewelry to the West.

Map of Ancient Venetian Trading Connections
Venice was the most successful of the North Italian city states in creating and maintaining a
republic dominated by a merchant capitalist elite. Thanks to its geographic position and
willingness to defend itself, it was able to guarantee its autonomy and freedom from landlords
and monarchs. In the past, Venice sold silk, spices, alum, sugar and lacquer to Northern Europe.
Trades happened over sea routes by ship which were opened between the Western
Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Another route was linked between Venice and Augsburg,
Nuremberg, Prague and Vienna via the Brenner Pass. German merchants typically bought
metals, metal products including silver. In 1318 the Fondaco dei Tedeschi was created in Venice
to provide for the trading needs and lodging of German merchants. By these connections,
Venice created a political empire. It was one of the first cities in Italy to engage in international
commerce. They established a maritime empire in the 1300s and a territorial empire from the
early 1400s.
