Message from President, TAR UMT Message from Prof Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei President of TAR UMT My warmest welcome to you. All of us at TAR UMT are happy to have you come on board as a TAR UMT student. You are now a TARCian, and you will be experiencing a totally different type of learning experience throughout your years at TAR UMT. We call this, Beyond Education where TARCians learn and grow in every aspect of their campus life from academic knowledge, important academic and life skills, valuable experiences and building network with strategic stakeholders such as industries, investors, other local and regional tertiary education institutions and professional bodies. Here are some of the exciting things you can look forward to as you begin your journey with us: • Ample opportunities to work with the industries to help you develop industry-ready skills through research work, projects and assignments. • The Student Centre, currently under construction and set to be completed by the end of 2024, will be the hub of all students’ activities including educational and recreational with comprehensive facilities and amenities. • A new SME Centre which will be in the Student Centre, will have a comprehensive ecosystem to help you explore and grow your entrepreneurial ideas into actual business ventures. • Over 100 clubs and societies for you to choose from where you can not only maintain an active lifestyle but also establish lifelong friendships with other TARCians who have similar interests. As you will be spending a lot of time on campus, you will discover the vast campus grounds are equipped with top-notch infrastructure facilities and filled with fun and engaging activities. Green nature is also a huge part of our campus to help you relax and enjoy the serene nature surroundings. What I have just shared is just a fraction of the dynamic Beyond Education experience you will gain at TAR UMT. The University offers a lot of opportunities to grow and learn, and it is wise to allow yourself to take advantage of all these opportunities for you to move ahead. Prof. Dr Chook Ka Joo Vice President, Student Affairs and Services Warmest greetings to you, our latest TARCian to join TAR UMT! You will be exploring a lot about yourself and expanding on your skills, values and competencies in your days at TAR UMT. During this phase in life, you will also mingle and interact with fellow TARCians from various backgrounds. I encourage you to embrace diversity as this will help you in adapting to new environments and develop lifelong friendships along the way. As a University, we are responsible to provide a vibrant and safe campus environment for you and every TARCian. This includes providing a wide range of help and assistance to support the various needs that you or other students may have. So, take every opportunity to learn and grow and if you face difficulties, always remember to reach out. There are many avenues for you to seek help from, such as your classmates, lecturers, the Student Representative Council (SRC), and counsellors at the Department of Student Affairs (DSA). On that note, I am sure you will be going through a life changing experience at TAR UMT. Message from Senior TARCians As you step into Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management & Technology (TAR UMT), you are now entering a new phase of life, opening a new page in your life’s diary. Tertiary education, which we anxiously look forward to, has become a reality but suddenly we are no longer sure that we want to be here at all. This is probably what all the freshmen are feeling right now. Don’t worry, we felt exactly the same when we first came in. Over here, we no longer stay protected in the thick cocoon that our family has spun for us. The journey between what you once were and who you are now becoming is where the dance of life really takes place. There are always two routes that we can choose life, one is the easy way out, while the other is the tough one. The only reward you get by choosing the easy way out is that it is easy. However, without struggle, there can be no progress. Our University understands the need for highly trained professionals as we move towards the globalisation era and thus offers a wide range of courses. Over here, we are trained to be a holistic individual, not only in the pursuit of academic excellence but also to enhance our leadership qualities and problem solving abilities. Many people will come into our lives – some stay for a while and leave indelible foot prints in our hearts and we are never, ever the same again. University is one place where you develop everlasting friendships and friends are probably your most precious assets in life. The thought of growing up, discovering more about myself, and navigating a completely new environment was both thrilling and daunting. I know many of you might feel the same way – excited about the possibilities but also a bit overwhelmed by the uncertainties. I want to assure you that you are not alone. This is why I highly recommend participating in the “Adjustment to Campus Life (ATCL)” event. ATCL is designed to help freshmen like you adapt smoothly to university life. It’s a fantastic opportunity to meet new friends from different programs and connect with friendly seniors who can offer guidance and support. During ATCL, we will have a variety of station games and sharing sessions that are both fun and enriching. These activities are not only a great way to break the ice but also to form lasting bonds with your peers. Reflecting on my own experience, I am grateful that I can join ATCL as a participant in my freshman year even though it is online. It is an honour for me, to represent Taletime Night 2024, as the Organising Chairperson, with the theme of UNCHARTED, this year. I would like to introduce Talentime Night to you all briefly. Talentime Night is an annual orientation event, where the finalists, the freshmen of this academic year, will compete against each other in four categories, which are, singing, dancing, instrumental and emcee. You will be going through a series of training sessions to prepare you for the actual night stage, which will be in August of this year. The theme for Talentime Night this year is called UNCHARTED, where we explore the land of the unknown and work together as a team to explore and find the precious treasure that values.
