Message from President, TAR UMT Message from Prof Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei President of TAR UMT Welcome, and congratulations on having made the wise choice to study at TAR UMT! As a TARCian, you are now part of a dynamic, innovative and community-connected institution that aims to help you grow, discover and realise your potential and aspirations. At TAR UMT, we believe that learning goes beyond the classroom and encompasses more than just attaining academic knowledge. We provide the Beyond Education experience of vibrant campus life and immersive experience where you are given the opportunity to develop your personal values and potential that will lead to a fulfilling life and career. You are joining TAR UMT at a very exciting time as the University is working towards becoming a regional talent development hub, as outlined in our 10-Year Roadmap. Here are some of the exciting things you can look forward to as you begin your journey with us: • Ample opportunities to work with the industries to help you develop industry-ready skills while still a student. This is achieved through various strategic collaborations the University establishes with many industry leaders. • The Student Centre, currently under construction and set to be completed by the end of 2024, will be the hub of all students’ activities including educational and recreational with comprehensive facilities and amenities. • A new SME Centre, currently underway, will have a comprehensive ecosystem to help you explore and grow your entrepreneurial ideas into actual business ventures. • Over 100 clubs and societies for you to choose from where you can not only maintain an active lifestyle but also establish lifelong friendships with other TARCians who have similar interests. Prof. Dr Chook Ka Joo Vice President, Student Affairs and Services Welcome to TAR UMT, and it’s great to have you on board as a TARCian. You will be exploring a lot about yourself and expanding on your skills, values and competencies in your days at TAR UMT. During this phase in life, you will also mingle and interact with fellow TARCians from various backgrounds. I encourage you to embrace diversity as this will help you in adapting to new environments and perhaps develop lifelong friendships along the way. We always strive to ensure the Campus is a safe and vibrant environment for TARCians to experience a fulfilling campus lifestyle. So, take every opportunity to learn and grow and if you face difficulties, don’t forget there are many ways to reach out for help. You can talk to your classmates, or approach the Student Representative Council (SRC), counsellors at the Department of Student Affairs (DSA) or your lecturers for help. Message from Senior TARCians As you step into Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management & Technology (TAR UMT), you are now entering a new phase of life, opening a new page in your life’s diary. Tertiary education, which we anxiously look forward to, has become a reality but suddenly we are no longer sure that we want to be here at all. This is probably what all the freshmen are feeling right now. Don’t worry, we felt exactly the same when we first came in. Over here, we no longer stay protected in the thick cocoon that our family has spun for us. The journey between what you once were and who you are now becoming is where the dance of life really takes place. There are always two routes that we can choose life, one is the easy way out, while the other is the tough one. The only reward you get by choosing the easy way out is that it is easy. However, without struggle, there can be no progress. Our University understands the need for highly trained professionals as we move towards the globalisation era and thus offers a wide range of courses. Over here, we are trained to be a holistic individual, not only in the pursuit of academic excellence but also to enhance our leadership qualities and problem solving abilities. Many people will come into our lives – some stay for a while and leave indelible foot prints in our hearts and we are never, ever the same again. University is one place where you develop everlasting friendships and friends are probably your most precious assets in life. Just like you, three years ago, I was a freshie too who started my university life with online learning due to the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Initially, I was worried that my university life would be dull and devoid of opportunities to make new friends and interact with seniors. However, my perspective changed when I participated in the "Adjustment to Campus Life" (ATCL) as it allows me to meet new friends and gain insights into campus life without being restricted by distance. As a senior now, I highly recommend all of you to join ATCL. It's an orientation program open to all new students at TARUMT, with an aim to help freshies adapt to university life by facilitating connections with peers from different faculties and courses. Also, through engaging games and sharing sessions, you'll have the opportunity to interact with fellow participants and build new friendships. Even though ATCL 2020 was the first virtual edition, it still successfully aided me in adjusting to campus life and I have no regrets about participating in it. It is an honour for me, to represent Taletime Night 2023, as the Organising Chairperson, with the theme of ILLUZIUM, this year. I would like to introduce Talentime Night to you all briefly. Talentime Night is an annual orientation event, where the finalists, the freshmen of this academic year, will compete against each other in four categories, which are, singing, dancing, instrumental and emcee. You will be going through a series of training sessions to prepare you for the actual night stage, which will be in August of thisyear. The theme for Talentime Night this year is called ILLUZIUM, where we can anticipate a more mysterious and illusive ambient, as we bring you a fresh and exciting performance as compared to the previous years.
