THE NORTH BEACH HOUSE AND GARDEN CLUB
31st ANNUAL HOUSE AND GARDEN TOUR
SUNDAY, JUNE 3rd, 2018 1-Spm
Welcome to the 31st Annual North Beach House and Garden Tour. This program
serves as your "ticket" to a casual day of strolling the town of North Beach and
sampling just a few of the town's charming houses and gardens. The North Beach
House and Garden Club has evolved a great deal in the two year hiatus since the last
tour. With a renewed emphasis on the garden aspect of the phrase "house and
garden," we think you'll find lots to look at and appreciate, not only at the residential
homes and gardens being hosted on the tour, but throughout the town as well.
Parkin&::The tour begins at St. Anthony's Church parking lot on the Chesapeake
Avenue, between 1st and znct Streets in North Beach. Parking is free at this location,
as well as on the street anywhere in town not marked specifically for residents. If
you have an electric vehicle, there is a free municipal parking lot with a 2 port
vehicle charging station behind Chesapeake's Bounty (entrance on Chesapeake Ave
between 5th and 7th Streets).
Gettin2Around Town: The tour is more walkable than ever this year. Most houses
are close together along Atlantic Ave (on the boardwalk), with just a few scattered
about the town, which is about a mile square. If you choose to follow the suggested
walking route, you'll cover approximately 2 miles. For those that desire it, there is a
free, air-conditionedshuttle making stops at all the featured sights on the tour.
You can flag it down anywhere along the route, which you can find on the map in
the center of this program.
Rest Stops: For your convenience, there will be two rest stops that have public
restrooms - The Bayside History Museum at 4th and Dayton, and the Sally
Donaldson Welcome Center at 5th and Bay.
Tour Etiquette: There are a few easy rules that we ask you to follow while on the
tour. The homeowners have been gracious enough to open their homes, and we'd
like this tradition to continue for years to come. Please:
• Follow any guidance provided by the homeowner
• Respect the homeowners' cordoned-off places
• Don't open inside doors that are closed
• Don't use homeowner's bathrooms without permission.
• Respect that this is someone's private residence - tour the house, but don't
make yourself at home on their furniture!
• Ask questions: homeowners would love to share their home's history,
features and improvements
• And most importantly - have fun!

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
If you haven't been to North Beach since the last tour, you'll immediately see evidence of the
growing pride we take in our homes and gardens, as well as in the town's many parks and
green spaces. The club's recent successes contributing to this revitalization include our Yard
of the Month program that has been inspiring and delighting homeowners for two years
running. The planters all along the boardwalk are the result of a partnership between
members of the House and Garden Club and the town staff. Together we lead groups of
volunteers every spring to create these wonderful displays of color.
My husband and I have loved living in North Beach the past 9 years. In that short time, we've
been impressed by the number of home improvement and new residential construction
projects in town. Three of the town's four parks have been created since we moved here.
The Sunrise Garden at 3rct and Bay, is particularly meaningful, as it was designed in concert
with the Calvert County Master Gardeners. The park offers a stunning variety of native
plants, as well as beautiful sculptures from local artists and interesting water features. In
2017, the House & Garden Club added plant identification signage to Sunrise Garden to
educate its many visitors about the value and beauty of these native plantings.
A heartfelt thank-you to all the members of the House and Garden Tour Committee. Without
Jane Hagen, Michael Hartman, Toni Healy, Bob Hellyer, Joan Krell, Virginia Masino,
Judy McCarthy, Sheila Milleon, Jeff Noyes, Lisa Payne, Barb Sikora, and Norma Jean
Smith this tour would not be possible. Also sincere thanks to the Mayor and the Town of
North Beach staff for supporting us all during the year with our various activities. And of
course, none of this would be possible without the following people generously opening
their homes, gardens and community spaces for the tour:
Sunrise Garden Heather Williamson
Chesapeake's Bounty Lee & Jan Travers
Siobhan Hensley Bob & Heather Hall
Ron & Ginger Armstrong Deborah & Jeff Noyes
Kirk & Debbie Betts Bayside History Museum
Lauren Kabler & Hannah Sarn
Whether talking to homeowners, strolling the gardens, or just enjoying the summer views, I
think you'll find a great deal to enjoy on this year's tour.
Happy Trowels,
Deborah Noyes
President, North Beach House and Garden Club
SUNRISE GARDEN
8930 Bay Avenue
North Beach
Guided tours of Sunrise Garden by a Calvert County Master Gardener are available on the day of the House and
Garden Tour, or you may stroll on your own. The park includes a gazebo, walkways, seating walls and benches,
as well as water features consisting of rain gardens, shallow koi ponds, water lilies and waterfalls. There are
inspiring sculptures on display by local artists - some are permanent, some on a rotating basis.
Sunrise Garden officially opened with a ribbon cutting in August, 2015. The 30,000 square-foot park location
was originally targeted for condominiums, but thanks to some great town planning is now a beautiful and
inviting green space. Here, residents and visitors come to relax and enjoy the spectacular views of the
Chesapeake Bay. Over a dozen local Maryland businesses aided in the planning, development and construction
of the park, which was funded through a private/public partnership.
The Calvert County Master Gardeners provided a planting design and made plant selections that optimize
the use of native flowers, grasses, trees and shrubbery. The North Beach House & Garden Club donated plant
signage located throughout the garden to help people identify what they are seeing should they choose to use
the same plants in their own gardens.
Return to North Beach during the holidays, and you will see Sunrise decorated with twinkling lights and festive
decorations along with the rest of the town. Sunrise Garden is open year-round, dawn to dusk.
Thank you to the two Master Gardeners who've volunteered to be docents today at the Sunrise Garden, Melanie
Crowder and Karen Anderson.
CHESAPEAKE'S BOUNTY
9124 Bay Avenue
North Beach
Chesapeake's Bounty has been part of life in Calvert County since 1994. The Bounty moved from the original
location on Route 4 in Prince Frederick, to its main location on a farm in Saint Leonard in 2007. The Bounty
opened the North Beach location in 2015 at the invitation of the North Beach Planning Commission and loves
being part of this charming, walkable, bayside community.
The Bounty owners believe in the health and economic benefits of local food, supporting local farmers,
watermen and other local producers and paying fair market prices for their products. Their goal is to find new
and innovative ways of connecting local food producers with steady markets, while considering the ecological
consequences of food production. With community support, the Bounty's team hope to continue to build a
food production network in Southern Maryland that is both ecologically sound and economically viable. For
this reason, all products are grown, caught or produced in the Chesapeake Bay region with no exceptions.
The proprietors passionately believe in local food and are committed to every product sold being from the
Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Local farm and seafood products include dairy, meat, grains, produce, oysters,
clams and fish. Also available is a wide selection of locally produced plants. While emphasis is placed on plants
that produce food for people, wildlife and insects, The Bounty also sells popular annuals and perennials.
Recently, the Chesapeake's Bounty operators reorganized the store to create a community gathering space used
for classes, workshops, art classes, music events and more. The Bounty's staff is especially excited about their
new partnership with the Bay Arts Center and the opportunities it creates. The organization also works to
support the local food pantry and is striving to create a new community garden in North Beach.
Chesapeake's Bounty most stunning display is the large mural depicting historical North Beach merging into
the modern day. It highlights the Chesapeake Bay connection to agriculture and seafood harvests and celebrates
our community's diversity and self-sufficiency. New this year is our quilt square, which is part of the Calvert
Barn Quilt Trail. The selection of the traditional maple leaf quilt for The Bounty's square is a perfect fit given its
emphasis on food, forests and integrated gardening.
Siobhan Hensley
9125 Atlantic Ave
North Beach
Siobhan Hensley, her teenagers, and their dog Cooper have lived in this wonderful home for two very busy
years. Siobhan, a registered nurse at Johns Hopkins Hospital says everyone thought she was crazy buying a
house right on the boardwalk in North Beach, but it has ended up being a blast for their entire family and a nice
respite from demanding work at a very busy hospital. Cooper enjoys walking the Hensleys along the boardwalk,
where they meet so many nice dogs and their owners. They just love that North Beach is such a dog friendly
town! The Hensleys hope you enjoy their beach house as much as they do.
RON AND GINGER ARMSTRONG
9137 Atlantic Avenue
North Beach
After purchasing the house in 2012, Ginger and Ron Armstrong discovered that Ginger's family was a part
of North Beach history dating back to several years prior to World War I. Ginger's Great Uncle, Doctor
Clarence Weaver, and his sister, Elsie Weaver Kettler (Ginger's grandmother), summered in North Beach. The
Armstrong's have a photo of them in North Beach waters taken in 1917, immediately prior to Clarence shipping
out to join the war effort in Europe. The site where their ancestors were in the water is mere yards from the
Armstrong home. The treasured photo is located in the upstairs hallway.
The home was remodeled in 2014 in order to relocate the kitchen, improve the front elevation of the home,
and renovate the upstairs bedroom layout. Ginger and Ron wanted to recapture the feel of an old beach house
that included a second floor sleeping porch. The decision of where to place the replacement windows was
made for the Armstrong's when they discovered the framing for the original windows during renovations.
Also, a large bedroom was divided into two smaller bedrooms to create a family suite.
During renovation they found that the drywall in the stair well covered 1930's era shiplap siding. Ron and
Ginger decided to feature the siding while installing additional shiplap on the wall. The rear patio has also
been renovated to create a private area away from the hustle and bustle of life on the boardwalk.
Ginger acquired a table containing multiple sorting compartments that lends itself to fun puzzling. Friends and
family enjoy working jigsaw puzzles upstairs in the master bedroom suite offering a magnificent view of the
Chesapeake Bay. Artwork done by family members is used as a window covering in the dining area.
The patio remodel and garden is still a work in progress which Ron and Ginger plan to diligently pursue
this spring. The inspiration for the fence comes from a Japanese garden the Armstrong's visited.
Ron and Ginger want you to know they consider North Beach as a Chesapeake jewel. They feel blessed to own
a home here and especially enjoy Bay life and the ability to walk around town to obtain whatever they need.
KIRK and DEBBIE BETTS
"Skipjack Cottage"
9200 Atlantic Avenue
North Beach
"Skipjack Cottage" was built circa 1916 for "Captain" Thomas Hensley, a waterman, and his wife, Nannie. It was
the first year-round home on this section of the beach. Capt. Hensley lived in the house until the early 1940's
and was its longest resident. The cottage had several owners prior to February 2016 when the current owners,
Kirk and Debbie Betts, purchased the cottage. Interestingly, the structures on the property have not changed
much since 1916.
The cottage's original footprint remains. There was a back porch, but it was enclosed to create an indoor
bathroom and enlarged kitchen. The interior of this 900 square foot home retains much of its original
character-2 bedrooms, a kitchen, dining, and living area, nine-foot high wood plank ceilings, painted pine
floors, original planked kitchen walls, cabinetry over the pie table, and trim, doors and hardware. Kitchen
renovations exposed the stove pipe to the chimney, most likely the location of a kerosene or coal stove for
heating and cooking. Over time, owners added baseboard heaters, air conditioning, vinyl siding, asphalt
shingles, an octagonal window and insulated windows, but the essential character of the cottage has been
preserved. The shed at the rear of the property was Capt. Hensley's workshop and storage for oyster tongs, crab
lines and other fishing gear.
In 2016, the kitchen was renovated, the pine flooring was restored in the kitchen, and the front porch was
enlarged. In 2017, the owners restored the skipjack shutters and began work on the gardens.
The cottage's furnishings seek to capture the views and the simple, casual and practical aspects of life along the
Bay. The artwork reflects the owners' interest in boats and the Bay. Rockers grace the porch, inviting visitors to
stop and talk or just to enjoy the Bay's ever-changing beauty.
The gardens are a work in progress since the "soil" is predominately sand that retains little moisture. The front
gardens are a mix of indigenous perennials (iris and tiger lilies), grass, and black-eyed Susan, knockout roses,
and foundation plantings. Morning glory and sunflowers will complement the tiger lily garden bordering the
north fence. A garden is being planted in the northwest corner of the yard-a former bamboo patch.
LAUREN KABLER
HANNAHSARN
9230 Atlantic Avenue
North Beach
This lovely, large home is just steps from Chesapeake Bay. The unobstructed Bayviews... north, east, and
south ... offer a serene and peaceful setting. This was a strong enticement for these homeowners who recently
relocated to North Beach from Washington, D.C. Subtle changes to the home include renovating the back porch
and stairs, new wire railings on the front decks, new front doors and bathroom updates.
On entering the house into a small foyer, ascend the stairs into a spacious and airy living room and experience
memorable water views, 10-foot ceilings and numerous windows that flood the house with natural light.
Flooring throughout the house is Brazilian hardwood.
Directly behind the living room is the kitchen with a burgundy-colored chef's stove, open shelving and marble
topped cabinetry. Located beyond the kitchen is the dining room and a screened-in porch.
The fireplace in the living room is gas and is surrounded by built-in bookcases. Some of the items displayed
on the bookshelves represent polished and natural lapis carvings from Afghanistan as well as several hand
carved ebony wood figurines from Tanzania. The original Pakistani wooden stamps were used to stamp fabric.
Contemporary furnishings provide a complementary background to rugs from Tajikistan,Afghanistan and
Baluchistan. The large abstract paintings and multi-media works are original to local artists.
Of note are the cathedral ceilings in the bedrooms and a roof deck.
HEATHER WILLIAMSON
4100 9th Street
North Beach, MD 20714
During the summer of 2016, after visiting an Aunt and Uncle in Chesapeake Beach, Heather decided to move
to North Beach. She subsequently purchased a renovated home one block from the beach. Sincethen, Heather
has been working to imprint her personality on the house she now calls home.
The fully renovated house, built in 1940,retains much of its original craftsman styling such as the frames around
the windows and doors. Severalinterior doors are original to the home. One of the home's unique features
is a wrap-around covered porch leading to a screened porch that Heather considers a boon living close to the
wetlands-loving mosquitos. The owner's preferred accent colors of blue and white are spread throughout the
house. The white themed kitchen has white granite countertops and cabinets. Flooring throughout the house is
bamboo with the exception of the guest bathroom floor which is marble.
Heather inherited some beautiful antiques from a family friend whose mother lived in St. Mary's County. They
comprise an antique desk in the guest bathroom, an antique dry sink in the office, an antique marble top hutch
in the sunroom and a handmade planter in the living room that is used to display pieces of artwork.
Heather's love of cross stitch is proudly displayed on pillows and various forms of framed artwork throughout
the home. Heather created the majority of cross stitch pieces scattered throughout her home including the
pillow of an ornate house in the sunroom. Note the framed black and white photos of Heather's grandparents
wedding pictures near the front door.
With the house's interior completed, the garden is now a work in progress. A coral bark maple and a Japanese
maple was recently added to the river rock beds, yucca plants and harbor dwarf nandinas. While all the plants
are still maturing, window boxes and patio plants will be added to the landscape.
THE WESTLAWN INN
Lee and JanTravers
9200 Chesapeake Avenue
North Beach
The Westlawn Inn is a family owned and operated restaurant and live music venue located one block from the
Chesapeake Bay at the corner of 7th and Chesapeake Ave. It was built as a boarding house in about 1926with
the original name of Shadow Lawn. When purchased by Ella G. and Clyde L. West from Grafton D. P. Bailey,
the building became known as The Westlawn Inn. The Wests owned the building from 1936to 1943. Through
the years there have been several owners - some of whom redecorated and maintained the property as a Bed
and Breakfast. In the lobby, there are pictures of the McGuire sisters (Colleen and Zita Irene), who were owners
of the building in the 70's, still operating under the name of the Westlawn Inn. Theseladies were the mother
and aunt of renowned local artist, Colleen Sabo. Other known owners were Denise England Devoe and Linda
Chappelear Travers (no relation) who operated under the name Angels in the Attic.
When the present owners, Lee and Jan Travers, purchased the property in 2002, it was known as Miguel'sBeach
Place and had a Caribbean theme. There were 9 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms at that time. Lee, a custom builder,
returned the building to its original Arts and Crafts style as a fine-dining venue. He added the wrap around
porch, built the bar and renovated the dining areas. (Many of the floors are the original pine floors and the
doors to the many bedrooms were used to form the base of the bar.) And he returned to the house the name The
Westlawn Inn. Of the many boarding houses that occupied the landscape of North Beach in the last century,
The Westlawn Inn is the only remaining wooden structure boarding house still in existence.
Lee and Jan are very excited to go back to the roots of the Westlawn as a "boarding house" with The Guest
Quarters at The Inn, currently under construction next to the restaurant. This new lodging is designed to
provide local and out-of-town guests with the opportunity to fully relax and enjoy everything the WestlawnInn
and North Beach have to offer.
The Guest Quarters has three units on the first floor, and two larger units on the second floor, each with a
screened porch reminiscent of the time period in which the Westlawn was built. Lee has designed the new
building to reflect the Arts and Crafts style of the restaurant - in a way that enhances the historical charm of
this wonderful town.
Whether you live around the block, or are exploring the Chesapeake's beautiful Western Shore for the first
time, The Westlawn Inn proprietors, Lee and Jan Travers, will welcome you to spend an evening enjoying the
critically-acclaimed cocktails and dining ... which makes for a "practically perfect" evening!
BOB and HEATHER HALL
3833 6th Street
North Beach
Originally built in 1969, the house was completely renovated in 2010, to include an addition. This beautiful
home features an open floor plan, hardwood floors throughout and magnificent landscaping.
The beautiful shrubbery and placement of crepe myrtles in the front yard is an introduction to what lies behind
the house. The backyard boasts a large deck, ideal for entertaining, that overlooks a beautiful waterfall and
stream leading to an expansive koi pond.
Inside the home, visitors will find a unique dining room table made from a repurposed door that was retrieved
from an underground ammunitions bunker, Dutch Island, Rhode Island. In addition, visitors will see canvas
prints showcasing local scenes displayed throughout the house, reproduced from photographic images.
The residence is a warm and inviting home that sets every visitor at ease with its relaxing atmosphere both
inside and out.
JEFF AND DEBORAH NOYES
4033 5th Street
North Beach
When the Noyes' purchased their home in 2009, they were faced with an overgrown landscaping challenge. The
initial transformation began by removing all of the existing plantings. EVERYTHING except the crepe myrtle in
the northeast corner of the front yard was removed.
The goal was to design a front yard so that even a casual passerby (5th Street has a lot of pedestrian traffic)
would enjoy the garden. The Noyes' started by planting outside the picket fence along the sidewalk so that
something new and interesting would catch your eye every season. An arbor with native Wisteria welcomes the
visitor into a small but colorful yard.
