••The Tide§ ()f Chanae()n The Che§apeake~~

To old-time residents of Maryland's Western Shore, the 1920's
evoke a time of bustling towns and lively waterfront resorts. Over
half a century later, many of the homes and businesses in these
towns have been given a new lease on life. Visit the creative and
charming renovations, ride in vintage automobiles, and enjoy the
relaxing life-style of these Chesapeake Bay communities.

1 - ChesapeakeBeach Railway Museum
ChesapeakeBeach, MD

This marvelous museum is housed in the original railroad station built in 1898. The railroad
began at the Washington terminal in Seat Pleasant and traveled through Marlboro, Mount Calvert,
Owings, and on to Chesapeake Beach, where a quarter-mile boardwalk paralleled the shore and
was lined with amusements and rides. A mile-long pier landed passengers arriving by steamer
from Baltimore. Thanks to the efforts of the Calvert County Historical Society, the station was
restored to its present condition and converted into a museum. Long skirted women, men in
bowlers and spats, laughing children are now just photographs of the many passengers who
arrived here between 1900 and 1935 for a day at the Bay, complete with an amusement park,
dance pavilion, and best of all, a public beach. Memories of the heyday of our Bayside resort are
still very much alive at this museum. Come taste the flavor of a Chesapeake past.

2 - Cadydid (Gary Jameson and Betty Carlson-Jameson)
4030 First Street, NorthBeach, MD

The Cadydid is one of the few remaining examples of the frame dwellings typical of the early
1900's. Built for the Cady family around 1910, it was their summer home for nearly seventy
years and is listed in the Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties at the Maryland Historical
Trust. Mr. Cady was a prominent figure in the early development of North Beach. Fully restored,
the Cadydid is a detached two-story dwelling on a cut stone piling foundation. The original
main block has rough sawn weatherboard siding. The hexagonal frame outbuilding in the
backyard was the ticket booth for the Great Falls, Virginia carousel. Purchased by the present
owners in 1979as both home and artist's studio, the three color paint scheme replicates the original
appearance of the house. Furnishings are period pieces, some having been in the family four
generations. The living room is decorated in the style known during the Victorian Era as
"Chinoiserie", a reflection of the Oriental influence of the period. Let a visit here transport you
back to early beginnings of North Beach by the bay.

3 - 8800 Bay Avenue (Andrew Solberg and Judith Kari)
Apt. 201, North Beach, MD

Nestled in the Victorian Mead House is "a nice place with lots of memories" -- a poetic
translation of Smultron Stalle, a bayside retreat of the Solberg family. In this condominium on
the bay, you can feel the spirit of Judith's Swedish heritage. The Solberg home is filled with
Andy's stunning photographs of the Chesapeake Bay, Janey's artistic drawings, delightful
Chesapeakeiana, and other beautiful artwork. The Solberg's bought their home after falling
instantly in love with the aesthetics of its natural setting, and with the warm sense of community
they discovered here in North Beach. Sincethen, they have accrued a host of memories inSmultron
Stalle, happy times enjoying both friends and nature. They invite you to visit and make some
happy memories of your own.

4 - Rosemont (Christian Beres and Nicole Staley)
8912 Bay Avenue, North Beach, MD

Chosen as a "work in progress", this 1931cottage was recently acquired with the intention of
preserving as much of the original structure as possible, taking into consideration the benign
neglect of recent years. Currently, the original plaster and lathe is undergoing replacement. The
new owners intend to keep the two large fireplaces and the log room and retain as much of the
flavor of the home with its interconnecting french doors, glassed-in side gallery, and the summer
veranda positioned to take full advantage of the house's picturesque view of the bay. Formerly
known as "Rosemont", Christian and Nicole have christened the cottage "Nhatrang" in
remembrance of a beach town in war torn Vietnam where Nicole found refuge. Christian, of
French descent, has been coming to this area looking for fossils since he was a child. Discovering
their cottage together is the fulfillment of dreams for both owners who are enchanted by the
uniqueness of the town and the friendliness of their neighbors.

5 - SkipjackCorner
9200 AtlanticAvenue, NorthBeach, MD

The hidden charm of this long neglected piece of property was recognized by its next-door
neighbors, who purchased it themselves. Now, newly renovated, the delightful corner cottage
has been given a new lease on life, while retaining its simplicity and original footprint. Handsome
new windows bring the bay view indoors, while shiplap style siding and shutters of original
design turn this cottage into the charmer it was destined to be. Replicas of the Chesapeake Bay
skipjack adorn its new shutters giving the cottage its nautical name and saluting that now almost
extinct sailboat, once the workhorse of the Chesapeake Bay. Inside the cottage, the rooms are
open and bright, incorporating a panoramic view of the nearby bay.

6 - 9212 Atlantic Avenue (Bill and Beth Heiner)
North Beach, MD

From the balconies of this contemporary Victorian-style home, the "front yard" waterview
extends as far as the eye can see. With a floor plan similar to the blue house on the nearby
boardwalk, both designed by the same builder, this new home incorporates a covered walkway
over the side entry. The Heiners were attracted to this area by the opportunity to live on the
water, to be just down the street from family, and to be within commuting distance of their teaching
jobs at the NavalAcademy inAnnapolis. They report, "Weparticularly love the gorgeous sunrises
on the water, the ability to decompress after work by watching and listening to the Bay,and the
overall small town atmosphere of North Beach. Often times we feel as though we are on vacation
and have to remind ourselves that this is where we live."

7 -1047 Bayfront Avenue, NorthBeach Park, MD

The owners of this recently renovated craftsman-style cottage are a transplanted New Yorker
and a handsome, debonair English bulldog named Harold. Care was taken in this renovation to
preserve stained beaded-board wood siding on the second floor, to lighten the wood on the first
floor, and to open the floor plan, thereby maximizing a breathtaking view of the Chesapeake.
The blue and white color scheme compliments the owner's spectacular collection of pottery
jardinieres, while the furniture arrangement spotlights her New York antiques and collectibles.
Try to guess which wonderful piece belongs to Harold. Recent landscaping has been focused
toward raising the level of the garden to avoid the "wetland" look, which is part of living close to
the water. Drinks on the deck, anyone?

8 - Bay Mallow
1020 Bayfront Avenue, NorthBeach Park, MD

A charming gingerbread house with extensive galleries, Bay Mallow nestles between the
Chesapeake Bay and a marshland ecosystem, in the community of North Beach Park, also known
as Holland Point. Its name is adapted from marsh mallow, a wild hibiscus which grows in the
brackish waters of the nearby marsh. Built in the 1920's, this once-upon-a-time, one-story summer
cottage underwent major renovation, beginning in 1981, and emerged ten years later as the two-
'story gem it is today. Structurally and architecturally, what greets the eyes results from the
creativity and vision of the previous owners; however, the current owner lays claim to the beautiful
landscaping. Custom conveniences, which include a built-in entertainment system, can be found
throughout the house, which also boasts a master bedroom with private balcony overlooking the
bay and a magnificent view of Tilghman's Island. Completing the house is a 2-level pier and a
water-loving, black labrador /border collie, a most excellent doggie name Anne Arundel (Anna
for short).

9 - Holly Hill (our cover home - Mr. & Mrs. Brice McAdoo Clagett)
333 FriendshipRoad, Friendship,MD

Holly Hill is believed to be the oldest house in Maryland, part of it having been built in 1699.
It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is featured in many history and
architecture books. Now the home of the Brice Clagetts, a descendant of the original builder,
Holly Hill offers visitors a glimpse into the privileged life of a 17th - 18th century landowner.
The character of the house has been preserved both in its architecture and its art. Inside, the
visitor will note the huge fireplaces, original floors and paneling, 17th century beams, and some
very old window panes with scratched autographs of 18th and 19th century owners and guests.
Glimpses of the original clapboard exterior of the 17th century wing can be seen in a closet. One
second-story room has a wall of marbleized paneling, considered to be one of the finest examples
of this style in the country. Early 18th century art, some set into the paneling, includes a detailed
painting of Holly Hill and is believed to be the oldest surviving painting of an American house.
The farm presently consists of 261 acres, and provides an unforgettable visit, both inside and out.

Thank you for coming!
