Greetings Friends:

On behalf of the brothers of Eta Nu Nu Chapter of the
illustrious Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., we would like to
thank our sponsors, patrons, supporters, families, and
friends who have helped bring the inaugural Benjamin
“Pops” Wilson Omega Talent Hunt and Recognition
Program to fruition. March 6, 2022, reflects the fruits of our
labor and exemplifies our dedication and commitment
to supporting the youth in the Greater Columbus, Ohio, area. It is our hope
that this effort will serve as a launch point for future partnerships
and collaborations as Eta Nu Nu continues to enhance the life chances of
Central Ohio’s youth via our mandated programs and other offerings. Service
to community and action toward social issues underlay the involvement of the
city’s newest Omega Psi Phi Chapter, having been established a mere two
years ago. This expansion has the potential to impact those who live, worship,
attend school, work and fellowship in the Greater Columbus, Ohio, area, in
unprecedented ways.

I would remiss if I did not point out the beginning of what promises to be an
enduring partnership with Urban Strings Columbus, whose members
will undoubtedly grace us with their presence at future Eta Nu Nu’s Chapter
events. Also, Capital University who has welcomed Eta Nu Nu with open arms
and provided an overwhelming level of support. In keeping with this recent
partnership, we endeavor to establish a presence on this beautiful campus in a
way that will not only contribute to the university’s intellectual vitality but
add to an increasingly diversified student body. Finally, we are fortunate to
have the support of the National Pan Hellenic Council of Columbus, Ohio,
which is a mainstay in this great city.

In sum, the men of Eta Nu Nu are looking forward to creating more
opportunities for collaboration and forging long lasting partnerships
throughout Central Ohio, in the years to come.

The History of the Omega Psi Phi Talent Hunt

The illustrious Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. was founded on the
campus of Howard University, in the nation’s capital, on November 11,
1911. In the ensuing years, the organization put in place a number of
mandated programs and initiatives designed to uplift Black
communities throughout the United States and abroad. In 1945,
toward the end of WW II, Brothers (some of them veterans) of the
illustrious Omega Psi Phi Fraternity’s sixth district (North and South
Carolina) thought it a good idea to nurture and cultivate in young
people a love of the performing arts. Thus, the Talent Hunt Program
was born. The first Talent Hunt was limited to musical performances,
but over many decades grew to include an array of creative expressions
such as dance, poetry, and spoken word, to name a few.

Every year, young people look forward to this grand affair, as it offers
them an opportunity to showcase their unique talents. For many
months and in some cases years, young people spend countless hours
each day honing their craft in anticipation of the big night. For some,
the Talent Hunt Program is their “coming out” party, their debut, if
you will. Others see it as their springboard to notoriety. While others
use this opportunity to determine whether or not showbusiness is
something they’d like to pursue in the coming years. Competition
among the contestants is keen, but the atmosphere is one of
excitement and jubilation. The Talent Hunt Program is a fun-filled
night that the contestants and those in attendance won’t soon forget.

The History of the Omega Psi Phi Talent Hunt

Eta Nu Nu’s Talent Hunt is named in honor of Benjamin Parker
Wilson, affectionately known as “Pops”, a buckeye and Ohio State
University alum. A native of Dayton, Ohio, Pops was born on January
9, 1947. The son of parents who wanted more for their son that they
could have imagined for themselves, Pops was determined to get a
good education. Like many young Ohioans, Pops knew early on that
The Ohio State University was where he wanted to be. Pops moved to
Columbus in 1966, during one of the most turbulent times in OSU’s
history, with demonstrations and rallies popping up almost weekly in
opposition to the Vietnam War. But OSU turned out to be the perfect
landing spot for Pops, as it was there where his musical talents were
actualized. During his time at OSU, Pops became an integral member
of the school’s marching band—the best damn band in the land. Pops
became a member of the newly formed Percussion Arts Society, was a
featured soloist with the percussion ensemble, and later worked with
the Columbus Symphony.

In 1971, Pops left school to launch a professional career. Pop’s bona
fides are too long to list, but he held the position of
drummer/percussionist, and later became company manager for
Theater-West in Dayton, Ohio; he also served as director of the U.S.
84th Army Jazz band in Germany. During his career, he performed
with such greats as Stevie Wonder, Lionel Hampton and Nina Simone.
His Pops Wilson Orchestra has a place in the annals of jazz history,
playing both at the Rockefeller and Lincoln Centers. Pops died in 2012
but his spirit lives on in Eta Nu Nu’s Talent Hunt Program.

Eta Nu Nu's Social Action

Omega Psi Phi Chapters
participate in activities that will
uplift their communities. Some
of the activities include: voter
registration, Assault on
Illiteracy; Habitat for Humanity;
mentoring; and fundraising for
charitable organizations. The Eta
Nu Nu Chapter has committed
itself to address such social
issues as homelessness, hunger,
domestic violence, prostate
cancer, poverty, assisting the
UNCF in raising funds for high
school students in addition to a
host of other noteworthy local
causes. These projects impact
youth, the elderly, disabled, and
a cross-section of race and
culture. These projects have a
geographic sphere that
encompasses the international,
national, and local
communities.
