OUR MISSION
The people of Hawaii are one ohana. The Hawaii Foodbank provides food so that no one in our family goes hungry.
We work to gather food and support from our communities. We then distribute food through charitable agencies to those in need.
Our mission is from the heart, and we will fulfill our mission with integrity, humanity and aloha.

November 2014
Dear Friends,
At the end of each year, we look back and are amazed at your dedication and
support to help fulfill our mission so no one in our ohana goes hungry. You are
the reason our outreach can expand to help feed more people each year.
One of the challenges we’ve consistently faced over the years is the rising cost of
food. In 2007, we paid about $5,000 for a container of rice. Today, it costs about
$14,000. Fortunately, we are able to purchase fresh produce through Feeding
America and private brokers for less than 28 cents a pound. The long–term
drought in California may seriously impact prices in the near future, but we will
continue to search for the best prices available.
The quantity of food we purchase has also increased. In 2007, only 5 percent of
the food we distributed was purchased. Last year, 21 percent was purchased
thanks to your monetary donations. Our increase in food purchases was
necessary to help feed the increasing number of people we serve.
Hawaii is the most giving population in the nation. Thanks to you, our
monetary donations have increased so we are able to purchase the food we need.
We had our first full year of service in 2011 at the Kauai Branch. That year, we
distributed close to 580,000 pounds of food to the people of Kauai. Last year, we
distributed 1 million pounds of food. This is another indication of the need we
see in our island ohana.
The Hawaii Foodbank board, staff and the people we serve are grateful for your
dedication and devotion to helping us fulfill our mission.
