About 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 13%) will
develop invasive breast cancer over the course
of her lifetime. In 2022, an estimated 287,850

new cases of invasive breast cancer are
expected to be diagnosed in women in the

U.S., along with 51,400 new cases of
non-invasive (in situ)
breast cancer.

Over two years ago my sister, Dr. Sonya M. Mixon, was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. It was devastating
news that was so sudden. In finding out the diagnosis I saw the resolve in my sister. Her immediate belief was God
is going to do a great thing. Her automatic instinct was her faith in God's healing and God guiding and directing to
the right physicians. What I can say is, God did it! He made a way for my sister. I'm not implying that her journey

was easy, I am saying she endured, and faith, prayer and perseverance made a difference
in her situation. I talk about my sister's healing and faith because she is inspirational. It
describes a journey of someone who could have given up the fight at the first diagnosis,
but reached down and found a resolve in her that many may need to hear, that resolve is
also in you. We walk by Faith not by sight, when it seems daunting and the odds and
percentages are against you, there is a God you can believe in, and look within yourself
and you may find a power in you to fight.
As of January 2022, there are more than 3.8 million women with a history of breast cancer
in the U.S. This includes women currently being treated and women who have finished
treatment. In women under 45, breast cancer is more common in Black women than white
women. Overall, Black women are more likely to die of breast cancer. For Asian,
Hispanic, and Native-American women, the risk of developing and dying from breast
cancer is lower. Ashkenazi Jewish women have a higher risk of breast cancer because of a
higher rate of BRCA mutations. One thing we believe that helped Dr. Mixon is early detection. She was always
prompt with her mammogram. Please be conscious of testing for yourself. Love yourself enough to care for you.
Self-love is your first love. God Bless to all those fighting this disease. Congratulations, and continued living to all
survivors. Ring your bell. This information is provided by Breastcancer.org. Donate to support free resources and

"THE
IMPORTANCE
OF KNOWING
YOU BEFORE

DATING"

Instead of sharing statistics of women and men that suffered from domestic abuse, I want us to celebrate those
that have escaped from such suffering and are living life on their terms and empowering others that are still
currently suffering with resources and support. I cannot say enough of how important it is to know oneself
before opening yourself to the world of dating as it will help you magnify your God given gifts of self, and to
help you recognize the warning signs of a person that does not have the capacity to love you in the right way
because they don’t love themselves. Many men and women haven’t had an example of a healthy relationship
and they find themselves modeling a pattern that is not healthy for them when involving someone into their
life. The results are devastating to you, and to the life of your children if you are a mother or father. Going
back out into the dating world is also a challenge if you were once the victim of domestic violence. The fear
can be overwhelming. Therapy is a great resource to take advantage of to address any feelings you may have
as you navigate forward in life, dating, and relationships.
The power of self-development cannot be underestimated, as knowing and loving yourself is key. Your new-
found self-worth will play a part in creating a standard that provides you with the armor you need to escape,
grow and prevent connecting with someone that may cause you great harm. I believe that our support and
awareness of domestic abuse should always be 24/7/365. However, let’s make the most of this month to gather
strength for ourselves, our children, and for those we know or don’t know that are suffering from this very
heinous act towards another living being by offering our support in the best way we can through the resources
available. I wish those that have made it through the horror of domestic abuse a fulfilling life, and I will
continue to pray and also offer support the best way I can for those that are currently dealing with this. Feel
free to reach out as I want those men, women and children to be free from those causing harm in your life. We
are here for you!

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, almost all individuals with dementia have one or more other
chronic conditions. Many of these conditions may have been the cause of, or at least contributed to, cognitive

JOIN SFCC IN RAISING AWARENESS ON MENTAL HEALTH

The misconception and stigma surrounding mental health is real. The only way we could correct it; is to start
talking about it with our families, friends, co-workers, and our community. Our focus at South Florida
Caribbean Conference (SFCC) is to bring our community together to help those in need, and to connect
families with available resources, along with inspiring families to live healthier and more successful lives.
Working in the mental health field for over 18 years has taught me the importance and the effectiveness of
raising awareness and sharing information to others. For the last year or so, I have felt drained, low on energy,
and at times I cry for no reason. I just want to be alone and away from people. With my knowledge and back-
ground within the mental health field; I knew something was wrong. I was not myself. If I felt that way, I
wonder how many other people feel the way I did. I observed my surroundings and the people around me. I
could see that I was not alone. I felt hurt because I felt that humanity was at risk and I must do something.

This year’s event is a walk/dance along to music from the Caribbean followed by speakers on Mental Health.
Participants would have the opportunity to connect with local community partners, organizations and build
his/her support system. This year our fight as a community is on Mental Health. This inspiring event calls on
participants of all ages and abilities to join the fight against causes that affect so many of us. We are reaching

THE LEGACY OF AN AUTHOR

There is something special about writing. One of our mottos at Blackstone is,
‘Publishing Makes you Immortal.’

Great individuals who put their thoughts to paper such as WEB Dubois and Marcus Garvey will live on forever
through the works they published. Even if we don’t become famous, our writings can be passed down from
generation to generation, leaving behind our legacy. What will your legacy be? As we know, when someone
passes away, someone typically writes a eulogy for that person. The eulogy is supposed to capture the essence of
the life of that individual. Information has to be collected from people that knew the person well, to give a little
snapshot of who the person was. Many people do a great job with this but, who can tell our story better than our-
selves? This is not to say that everyone will write an autobiography. Rather, an author has the capacity to write
anything that consumes their mind. Whether it is Fiction or Nonfiction, the author’s ability to express themself
will become that person’s legacy.
Our legacy is about the story that is told about us. It is our gift to the world. All people have some type of gift. If
the gift happens to be carpentry, that information can be put into book form and passed on to other people. If the
gift is cooking, a great cookbook can be produced. I recently went to a family member’s funeral and her cook-
books were passed around as people talked about how great of a cook she was. If our gift is imagination and
storytelling, a great fiction novel can be produced. Some people do want to talk about the story of their life and
create an autobiography. Whatever it is, we encourage people to write! Put your passion on paper and get it into
book form. For those of us with busy lives, writing is still an option. Journaling is a great way to start. We always
think thoughts in our head. Journaling is just getting these thoughts down on paper. Unless we put our thoughts
onto paper, these thoughts will be fleeting. As we build our journal, we will start to see patterns of our thoughts
and our reaction to different events. We can actually discover things about ourselves through journaling. Even if
we take fifteen to twenty minutes of our day to write, it will be well worth it. Years later, we can look back at our
thoughts and see how we’ve developed in time. It is something that can be passed down to our children, grand-
children and great grandchildren, etc. Our writing can most definitely become our Legacy. We encourage every-
one, Write!

"First Jamaican Female Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon In The United States,
and A World-Class Athlete"

met Dr. Camille Coates-Clark at the Jack and Jill 45th National Convention on July 30, 2022 when I
was the guest Celebrity Vegan Chef presenting my vegan food demonstration. She stopped by my
demo station to sample the smoothie that I made. We had a brief conversation and she mentioned that
she represented Jamaica in track and field back in the 1980’s. As a fellow Jamaican, it caught my
interest because track and field is a big part of our culture. I wanted to know more about her track and field
days, so we exchanged numbers. I then spoke to her the following day and found out that she was a World-
Class Athlete, who was a reserve for the Olympic Squad 4x100 meter relay to represent Jamaica in 1984, and
beyond that she was also the first Jamaican female Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon in the United States. I
was intrigued by her story, a young girl who came from the little Island of Jamaica to the United States and
made history. I never thought in my wildest imagination when Jack and Jill of America, Inc., contacted me to
present a vegan food demonstration for their 45th National Convention that I would have met the first
Jamaican female Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon in the United States. I am truly honored to have the
opportunity to do this exclusive interview and feature her on the cover of Karibbean Under One Magazine for
our Fall/Winter issue.

Dr. Camille Coates-Clark, was born in Spanish Town, Photo by Abilene
St. Catherine, Jamaica. She started her track career at Christian University in
the age of eight, participating in community based Prickly Pear Year Book
sports events in Ensom City. She went on to represent
Immaculate Conception High School at Jamaica's
National Girls High School Championships, setting
three records in two classes (divisions). Her class 4
100-meter record remained unbroken for over twenty
years. Dr. Coates-Clark subsequently received track
scholarship offers to both Abilene Christian
University and Princeton University.

She chose Abilene Christian University and became a University College of Medicine. She completed her
member of the Lady Wildcats’ track team. While a internship in general surgery at Howard University
college student, she represented Jamaica in the 100, Hospital, and also her Residency in Orthopedic

impact on my decision. I experienced orthopedic
injuries as well, however the greatest impact was
my mom’s orthopedic related conditions which
really inspired me to become an Orthopedic
Surgeon because I wanted to help my family and
others.
KUOM: You are the Orthopedic Surgeon for
the Veterans Health System, what is it like work-
ing for the veterans? I love taking care of the
veterans. I have been working with the Veterans
Health System for the past 14 years. I work with
veterans in their 20’s through 70 and above. I am
very happy that I am able to meet the veterans’
needs whether it is a surgical procedure or non-
surgical treatment to help them get back to their
jobs and various activities. One of the most com-
mon procedures that I perform is the rotator cuff
repair which enables the patient to get back to their
jobs. Some of the veterans are very active in sports,
so it’s rewarding to know that I am able to help
them get back to the sports that they enjoy. It is also
a very rewarding experience especially when they
feel better and tell me how much they appreciate
me taking care of them. A lot of them have positive
attitudes. It feels good when one of the veterans
says “Thanks Doc, I am better, now I can go back
to work.” It’s a great feeling to know that I am able
to use my gift as a surgeon to assist them.
KUOM: When you have to do surgery, how do
you prepare your mind to get ready for surgery?
Before the actual surgery, I pray. Getting ready for
surgery is like getting ready for a race, I have to
prepare my mind to be focused. A few days before
the surgery I make sure I go over the patient’s chart
and study all the details regarding the patient’s
history to make sure I get a full understanding of
what is going on with the patient. Even though I do
surgery a hundred times, I still make sure I prepare
very well because every surgery is different.

Dr. Charles Epps Jr., an Orthopedic Surgeon who served as Dean of the Howard University College of
Medicine, and has written many books. Dr. Terry Thompson, the Charles H. Epps, Jr., Professor and current
chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, who was very influential in my pursuit of the Sports
Medicine speciality. He made it possible for me to attend the National Medical Association meeting as a
student to present a paper. I was the first medical student to present a paper in the orthopedic section. Other
pioneers include Dr. LaSalle D. Leffall, former President of the American Cancer Society and the American
College of Surgeons, who was also the Charles R. Drew Professor of Surgery at Howard University College
of Medicine, and Dr. Edward Anthony Rankin, the first African-American President of the American
Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.

KUOM: That was very impressive that you got that opportunity as the first medical student to present
your paper. You also did a project with your brother on a research paper that was published in the
Journal of Applied Biomechanics. Can you tell us a little about that collaboration? I collaborated with my
brother, Dr. Cameron Coates, on two research articles that were geared towards the biomechanical aspects of
bone healing and internal fixation systems. That journal article, Impact Response and Simulation of Damaged
Ulna with Internal Fixation, investigated a worst-case scenario in which a previously damaged bone plate
system was subjected to a second impact load. Models that accurately predict bone response to impact were
still not well developed, particularly after a second impact during or post healing. In that work, we did
experimental testing to determine energy magnitudes needed to cause fracture of ulnas with internal fixation.
A computational model was then developed which corroborated the results reasonably well. The fact that he is
an Engineering Professor and my background as an Orthopedic Surgeon made that collaboration possible. I
think we might be the first Jamaican brother and sister team to collaborate on a formal peer-reviewed research
publication.

KUOM: Wow! another first. You are truly a trailblazer. You also received some prestigious awards,
The Lange Medical Publications Award of Outstanding Achievement as a Medical Student and in 1998
Outstanding Chief Resident of the Year from the District of Columbia General Hospital. How did you
feel receiving these awards? These awards let me recognize how hard I have worked to be where I am
today. I am grateful that I received them. My desire to become a doctor started at the age of 10. Growing up
in Jamaica, my parents were not rich. My mother was a teacher and my father was an accounting clerk. They
worked and sacrificed a lot to help me achieve my dream of becoming a doctor. It makes me feel very proud to
know I was able to achieve this level of success with their help and the help of God. I was determined to work
hard to be a doctor so I could help people and support my family, and also give back to others who are less
fortunate. I donate my time and talent to different organizations including church. I am proud and thankful that
God has given me this opportunity because without God I could not have done any of this.

KUOM: You have been on your Christian journey for quite some time. Tell us a little about your
Christian walk, and how it helped you to survive Covid-19 in 2020. Wow! I grew up in Jamaica going to
church with my mom and dad, and my two brothers. When I was 14 years old, I gave my life to Jesus, and
since then I have been praying and believing. My faith helped me tremendously during Covid-19 in 2020. It
was a big challenge at the Veterans Health System, but we took the necessary precautions and followed the
guidelines to help our veterans, and with prayer we were able to get through that difficult time.
KUOM: You started the Coates-Clark Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Center in 2003 but closed it in
2006. Do you have any intention to open the center again? Not really. I had a great experience and met a lot
of people, but private practice is very challenging because you have to deal with a lot of administrative
work. I felt that my talent is more to serve, so working with the Veterans Health System works better for me
because I can use my talent and gifts to serve the veterans.
KUOM: You are also a member of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. What inspired you to join the
organization? I am proud to be a part of Jack and Jill of America Inc., it allows me to give my time and talent
to help educate our young children in different aspects, whether it’s in finances, health or civic events. My own
