MENTAL ILLNESS

I remember as a child growing up decades ago in Jamaica, people who acted in ways that were considered
“out of the norm,” were treated much differently than they are being treated today when it comes to
Mental Illnesses.

People were so unkind to one another in many instances! Folks were laughed at, jeered, mocked, shunned and
even physically and mentally abused just for being different... I believe that then people, in general, were
probably more ignorant than judgmental about mental illness.
Let’s think about it… Hypothetically speaking… Sharon who moved, walked or talked too slowly, would’ve
been referred to as a lazy person. While Sonia who walked too fast at times, always tripping over herself or
dropping things, who’s movements were fast with sudden impulsive jerks at times and occasionally talked

with a lisp and exhibited uncontrolled twitches, was
referred to as demonic or Possessed. In Hindsight Sharon
could’ve been deeply depressed and Sonia may have had
what's called St Vitus Dance. I knew Tommy, who was an
eccentric man who was always dressed to impress in the
sharpest three piece suits!! when I said sharp, I meant the
sharpest!.. cause nobody else had pants seamed so stiffly,
spray-starched & ironed so crisp! He used to top it off with
a matching fedora or Kongal hat, with color coordinated
shoes and socks! He was hotter than ten fire sides. You
could smell Brute cologne as he passed by... it was strong,
strong, strong..... but you would also hear him too. He was
a very intelligent and well-spoken older gentleman who
truly loved to speak. He was often seen walking down the streets engaged in some serious talk out loud,
in-depth conversations with himself,.. along with an imaginary friend… Let me tell you, those conversations
went on forever and involved him both asking and answering his own questions… In his case it was said that
he had “ Quick-silver”… Now, in hindsight, perhaps that could’ve been Schizophrenia? I recall my childhood
neighbor Ken, who once sat out in the pouring rain on his fence in his front yard with a garden hose in hand
watering his front lawn while it was pouring down cats and dogs, lightning, thunder and all, as he sang a Bob
Marley’s classic “Coming in from the cold” with a few expletives mixed in for good measure. Needless to say
that he had the entire neighborhood peering through their windows cracking up with laughter, not to mention
talking about it for some time after. Looking back now, for lack of better words, it was a serious joke!… cause
he probably was having a Bipolar manic episode?
A young adult who may have had a Learning disability such as dyslexia, may have been considered hard ears
or called dunce. Or, if a child wasn’t able to sit still in his or her chair, maybe rocking back and forth in their
seat, or who constantly got up, that child would’ve been considered ill mannered… and needed some good
home training or discipline. Well, now we know that could’ve been undiagnosed ADHD or Autism right?...
Not to mention Junior, the young man down the road who was nicknamed “Big boy” because he often
dribbled and acted like an eight- year-old. Another case, someone's Aunty Beverly who kept asking you the
same question over and over again “whose child are you"? every few minutes… Probably Alzheimers?.. Also
I hate to, but sadly, must mention the insensitive comments that were once casually tossed about….that if you
checked someone in at the Bellevue Mental Hospital “ you could receive a tin of Milo” for that person…Not
sure how true or not that was, but it was just a wrong and uncaring nonchalant attitude, thinking back… Over
the last few years so many people have bravely come forward to use their platforms to shine a light on the
importance of transparency on Mental issues in our society.

Weighing In continues with Sophie G
Celebrities have courageously used their faces and voices to share their own personal stories to help shine a
light on the stigmas that’s been attached to mental illness. As well as point to the extra damage the lack of
knowledge and awareness can have on the mentally ill, hoping that with awareness society will come to
understand the disease, thus preventing any more unnecessary & senseless, accidental deaths or suicides.
Recent stats from The CDC have shown that One in every four adults is currently suffering from some form of
mental disorder or depression. And in our children, it’s three in every four…
Let’s keep in mind that some of the signs may be rather easily identified. For example: lack of sleep/lack of
appetite/ irritability/anxiety depression/and PTSD, just to name a few... and these affect both adults and
children the same. As we reflect and focus on Mental Health/ Autism and Alzheimer’s we see just how far
we’ve come in realizing that it is so important to be more empathetic to others in this situation, especially if a
person starts to exhibit isolating behaviors.
Mental health crises are often potentially life- threatening if go unaddressed. It often leads to lack of or over-
looked opportunities in education as well as employment which in turn often contributes to heavy financial
strains on families, caregivers and the society in general. Respectfully speaking, I think, whether old or young,
the fact is that mental illness or unwellness, could at any time invade or impact our own personal homes and
lives. My final words of wisdom to you are, Do your best at improving you and your circumstances, to the
best of your capabilities and of ability.
When needed Give help or seek help!.. & Remember that “it’s ok to not be ok “... Anything that’s outside of
your control, pray about it and then remain hopeful.. Meanwhile, make time to consciously remind yourself to
breathe… And just live with being content in your “now”.

A MAN’S MENTAL HEALTH IS IMPORTANT

Grace and Peace. I am thankful for another opportunity to write about another important subject, men’s
health. Often, men are overlooked and ignored when it comes to mental health.

I am disabled veteran, and this particular subject affects so many veterans. There are roughly about 1.7 million
veterans being treated for mental health issues, that is about 45% of all veterans in a program being treated for
mental health. In the U.S. one in five adults live with mental illness, that is about 50 million adult persons
living with mental illness. In that number 37% are men. The number is believed to be higher, because men are
less likely to talk about or seek help.

There were many years that there were stigmas attached
to those with mental health issues, which led to so many
people refusing to even be checked. I would say to you if
your car or an appliance doesn’t operate the way you
know it should you would have it at least evaluated to
find out why it is not operating the way you know it
should.

There may come a time in your life when things don’t
seem right for you at minimum get it evaluated that way
whatever is wrong, with help can be correctly evaluat-
ed. There are those who have mood disorders, such as
depression and bipolar; psychotic disorders, such as
schizophrenia; PTSD and other anxiety conditions; and
substance abuse disorders. Many people have been led to
believe that it's their fault or ostracized because they are not what societal norms would consider normal.

I could surmise with the number of persons diagnosed with mental health issues it is a lot more common than
we want to believe. Practically, everyone knows someone battling with mental health issues, you know them
you just don’t know their issue or their battle, but you know them. Mental health issues can be helped if we
seek help. There are those who are sending signals of help but just don’t know how to ask. Here is one way to
ask. I NEED HELP!

The struggle is real just to say that for many people. There is such a battle within to want to ask for
assistance. The world has so much going on and there are additional stresses on people to make ends meet, it
can become overwhelming because there are responsibilities that we have to take care of and life happens.

A common thing that happens are accidents, they happen out of nowhere and alter a person life, and now a
person who may not have an issue mentally now feels differently about themselves and their outlook on life
differs, due to a life altering action of an injury or chronic pain from an injury which can often lead to
depression and/or substance abuse. It may be hard to ask for help if you’re unsure of how to deal with your
main problem which could be chronic pain and in-turn ignore the issues brought on by the pain. So, we get
help for the obvious pain and may not get help for the pain we keep in silence.

I know many men over the years who have been hurt and say, I will just deal with the pain, because I have to
get back to work. These bills aren’t going to pay themselves. Pushing aside what ailments they have for the
responsibilities they feel are more pressing than their own health. There is a colloquial saying “hurt people,
hurt people”, but also remember you are part of people.

Faith Sessions continues
You must take care of yourself first, because if you don’t , it
is so much harder to be a help to anyone else. Know that
you matter, if to no one, you should matter to you. Health
includes your mental side not just your physical.
There is a father’s instruction written by King Solomon, the
man of wisdom, in the Book of Proverbs, the 4th chapter
and 7th verse, it says “Wisdom is the principal thing; there-
fore get wisdom: And with all thy getting get under-
standing.” King Solomon is saying, Chokmah, wisdom is
paramount, he believed wisdom could accomplish all
things, therefore get as much wisdom and knowledge you
can gather, and one of the greatest understanding you can
get is of oneself.
I believe a healthy mind is a wealthy mind. Knowledge is
wealth! And even a healthy mind needs maintenance.
Continue to work on yourself and never be afraid to ask
help from the right people. Live your best life every day,
that day!

6 FOODS THAT AID IN HAIR GROWTH!

Treat your hair by feeding it! Yes, feeding it. There is a long list of foods that aid in the growth of hair. In this
article we will go over 6 of those power foods. Keep in mind that what you put in your body has a major effect

on your skin and hair.

Nuts: Walnuts, cashews, pecans and or almonds are a high source of protein. The protein in these nuts work to
keep your hair stronger and fuller. Another great reason to eat these nuts are the zinc they provide. Zinc helps
reduce the shedding of your hair. Which means your hair will be fuller for a longer time.
Fish: Fatty fish like herring and mackerel have nutrients that may promote the growth of hair and an excellent
source of omega-3 fatty acids (prevents hair loss). Other types of fatty fish are salmon, trout, albacore tuna,
swordfish, and mussels. Salmon is also a great source of protein and vitamin D.
Beans: The protein in kidney beans and lentils can increase the thickness and length of our hair. These beans
help to reduce hair breakage as it has iron, zinc, and biotin. Beans in general are a great plant-based source of
protein, which is essential to the hair growth cycle.
Spinach: Healthy green vegetables are rich in beta carotene, which converts into vitamin A. Vitamin A helps
the skin glands produce sebum. This oily substance helps moisturize the scalp to keep hair healthy and not
brittle. Spinach is also loaded with beneficial nutrients like folate, iron, and vitamins C.
Oats: Oats are full of hair-loving nutrients. Eaten regularly and or used topically, you will notice that your
hair appears thicker, longer and stronger. Oats are also a good source of fiber, zinc, iron, omega-6 fatty acids
and polyunsaturated fatty acids. These minerals stimulate dormant hair follicles and promote hair growth.
Fruits: Blueberries have a lot of vitamin C that improves oxygenation and circulation of blood in the body,
particularly the scalp. Your body needs vitamin C to create a protein known as collagen (an important part of
hair structure). Vitamin C also helps your body absorb iron, a mineral necessary for hair growth. Other fruits
that are good sources of vitamin Care, strawberries, peppers, guavas, and citrus fruits.
NOTE: Remember to be mindful of how you are treating your body and what you put in your body so you can
have healthy hair. Any personal questions or concerns about your natural hair please visit www.jameeg.com to
book a consultation or grow your knowledge as a natural hair specialist. Let’s keep our hair healthy.

SUNSCREEN FOR YOURSELF & YOUR FAMILY

When thinking about sunscreen for yourself or family. Do you think about chemicals like oxybenzone,
octinoxate (octyl methoxycinnamate), homosalate, octisalate, octocrylene, and avobenzone?

Well, you should because many of the chemicals I mentioned above are filled with disruptors. Which are
harmful even in small doses because they mimic the hormones that our bodies create which can interfere with
the skin, hair, reproductive systems, and metabolism. Make sure that you look up ingredients if you are not
sure if it is harmful. Read the label to check if it blocks both UVA and UVB. Look out for paraben,
phthalates, sodium laureth sulfate, and fragrance. Some labels will claim to be paraben free, but then they
have other chemicals in it, so beware of that. Mineral sunscreens are best, but again make sure there aren’t
harmful ingredients. Labels can be very deceiving because they advertise what they know is appealing to the
consumers and what is harmful is not highlighted. Although no sunscreen can block the Sun 100%, it is
recommended by Dermatologists that the SPF be 30 or higher. Everyone, no matter what skin shade they are,
needs SPF. Read labels to make sure the sunscreen is for your skin type and if being water resistant is
important, make sure it states that. Not applying a Sunscreen can cause cancer, premature aging and can
change your skin texture, cause scarring and spots and can break blood vessels.

Also, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, UVA rays can penetrate clouds, and they can also reach
below the water's surface, so it is very important to always apply Sunscreen.

Relationship For Men 101

If there is one thing I am certain of in my thirty years in this space is that in order to be an effective man in an
intimate relationship… Is to know who you are and where you are going as a man. .

ou see, the woman you have decided you want to
spend the rest of your life with has to know you are
ready and able to lead the direction of the relation-
ship. If she feels you have no direction or purpose in
your life, then you will not have it for the relationship.
Truth be told, that is a fair assessment. Men, I need you to
take a complete inventory of yourself; mentally, physically,
emotionally, and spiritually and be honest with yourself.
The intimate relationship is a powerful and pivotal part of
your life and as men we can always improve ourselves to be
better or step away and receive the help we need to be the
best version of ourselves for ourselves and the woman in
our life.
Gentlemen, stop allowing pride to get in the way of taking
advantage of the resources available to get you to the next
dimension of a healthy manhood and masculinity. Attracting
a quality woman is dependent on that.
Feel free to reach out to me if you are looking for direction,
because as men we need to network and share wisdom and
resources to be the best we can be as men for ourselves, our
family, community and for the woman we look to spend the rest of our life with. Our leadership was needed
and desired. Let’s do our part.

ALZHEIMER’S AWARENESS MONTH

I was my mother’s caretaker when she had Alzheimer’s. That terrible disease took her life. I watched the
degenerative changes and felt hopeless that I couldn’t do anything against this disease.

I learned a lot during the process, and I became an Alzheimer’s Advocate in hopes of helping others that are
dealing with a family member who has been diagnosed. Let me start off by saying, they have no control of this

disease, so your patience has to be a priority. Please sign up
with a local support group because you will need it. Educating
yourself with this disease is very important. Assisting with
stimulating activities such as coloring books, play dough,
music, exercise is very important and making sure that doctor
appointments are kept, hygiene is kept up, healthy diet is
implemented and dental visits.

I included a MIND diet so that you can make sure that healthy
eating is a part of your loved one’s daily life. Avoiding Soda,
snack bars, candy, baked sweets, coffee drinks with sugar is
essential. For healthier alternative desserts, you can go to

Websites:
https://thishealthytable.com/blog/healthy-desserts

week/healthy-desserts/healthy-d essert-recipe-ideas

According to www.Nia.nih.gov here are Ingredients of the MIND Diet. The MIND Diet focuses on plant-
based foods linked to dementia prevention. It encourages eating from 10 healthy food groups: Leafy green
vegetables, at least 6 servings/week. Other vegetables, at least 1 serving/day, Berries, at least 2 servings/week,
Whole grains, at least 3 servings/day, Fish, 1 serving/week, Poultry, 2 servings/week, Beans, 3 servings/week,
Nuts, 5 servings/week, Wine, 1 glass/day, and Olive oil. I’m also including some resources below that are
very helpful. If you would like to discuss exercise sessions for your loved one, you can contact me to discuss
it further. I offer specialized training sessions that can be very helpful with body movement and music
stimulation.

SO, YOU THOUGHT YOU WERE “THE BLACK PANTHER”

When you were young and able to leap over buildings in a single bound like Superman, you thought you would
live forever.

I’m Dr. Ronald Lynch (Retired), I would like to share with you
now that you have reached and passed 40 the love handles around
your midsection, the decreased muscle tone, elevating blood
pressure, sugar and cholesterol have become our reality.

Some of us are more fatigued, less able to focus and even have
flat tires in the bedroom . Where is your vigor and vitality and
how can it be restored? Could it be that low testosterone levels
may be a contributing factor?

Testosterone is the most important sex hormone in men and when
your testosterone levels are low you can experience a lack of ener-
gy, a loss of sexual interest, difficulty maintaining an erection and
mood changes. Low T can also increase your risk of cardio-
vascular disease ,diabetes and obesity. Diet, exercise and well
chosen supplements may help you to maintain normal levels of
testosterone.

Some men will specifically benefit from testosterone in the form of shots, topical gels or pellets. Erectile
dysfunction which is the inability to attain or sustain an erection is embarrassing, frustrating and can affect
your relationships and your self-esteem. 90 to 95% of cases are treatable. A normal erection relies upon good
circulation and blood flow to the penis. Nitric oxide (NO) is a blood vessel dilator that allows the blood
vessels to enlarge and leads to increased blood flow in the erectile tissue.

If inadequate circulation is at play with poor blood supply, NO won’t perform it’s duty leaving you with a
“flat tire.” What are the foods ,drugs or supplements that can ensure good levels of Vibrant circulation? Are
you still running, walking or engaged in sports activities? Have you taken notice of The 44 y/o Tom Brady
phenomenon who eats 80% plant foods and only 20% animal products on his plate?

How could this “senior citizen“ play with guy’s half his age and still rise to the top echelons of football? Yes
lifestyle matters tremendously to maintain vitality and virility.

Nutrition: Most of us have consumed too much pork, chicken, and beef over the years not knowing how
much herbicides, pesticides and growth hormones were in our meats. Neither are we aware of the pink slime
or other preservatives and coloring agents we get for no additional cost. Unless the meats are “organic “ we are
taking chances with our health. We must go more for salads, fruits, veggies ,nuts and seeds if we expect to
enjoy longevity with quality. Drink lots of water .

Garlic: Supports healthy blood pressure and reduces unhealthy cholesterol levels.
Fish Oil: Protects blood vessels thanks to DHA and EPA. Fish oils also reduce hardening of the arteries, in-
flammation and tendencies for blood clots. These fish include salmon, snapper ,halibut and other cold water
species not contaminated by mercury or farm raised.
Beets: Helps your body produce NO. (Nitrous Oxide).
Supplements: capable of improving blood flow and libido and worth investigation for ED concerns.
L-arginine: increases NO
Longjack: tongkat Ali - increases testosterone
Maca: increases libido
Tribulus Terrestris: increases hardness of erection
Zinc: activates testosterone
Selenium: - activates T

The only pathway to get your testosterone level checked is by
going to your Primary Care provider or your Urologist. By the
way, how is your total cholesterol, blood sugar including the
Hemoglobin A1c which pin points if you have a tendency
towards Diabetes. If your blood pressure is elevated, do you need
a stress test ? These are among the questions you can ask your
health provider.

A Courageous Mother Bringing Awareness to Scleroderma

In late 2019, Kathia Wright lost her four year battle with Scleroderma, a devastating autoimmune connective
tissue and rheumatic disease. Scleroderma affects the body by causing the skin to become thick and tight and

forms scar tissue that can impair the functions of major organs such as the
lungs and kidneys.

There are two types of Scleroderma, localized and systematic, with systematic being fatal. According to
www.Medlineplus.gov, “The prevalence of systemic scleroderma is estimated to range from 50 to 300 cases per 1
million people. For reasons that are unknown, women are four times more likely to develop the condition than
men.” Researchers have identified variations in several genes including the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) complex
that may influence the risk of developing systematic Scleroderma. However, research has not yet discovered how these
variations contribute to the development of the disease. Kathia’s mother and caretaker, Azoira Wright made a promise to
her dying daughter that she would help to bring awareness to this little known disease. True to her word, Azoria has tak-
en a huge step towards this goal by writing an extremely moving and informative article for the Florida Sun news-paper,
entitled: “Mother and Daughter Struggle with Rare Disease Scleroderma.”

But Kathia’s life story is not only defined by her tragic passing, she was a
beautiful, vibrant young woman who lived a full life that began with a happy child-
hood. Azoira gave birth to Kathia on June 2, 1975 in New York City. She was a girl
scout, she enjoyed playing with her friends, she was bright and excelled in school.
Speaking tenderly about her daughter, Azoria says: “Our relationship was wonder-
ful. We were sisters and best friends.”
KUOM: Azoira, what were Kathia’s goals and passions in life? Her passions
were cooking, raising her dogs, and traveling. Her goal was to open a restaurant.
KUOM: What were the circumstances that led up to your daughter
being diagnosed with Scleroderma? Kathia's legs had scars on them and
ulcers formed on her fingers. And she was in constant pain, going in and out
of hospital.

her every need. KUOM: How did being your daughter’s primary caretaker affect you?
It was extremely hard on me, finding care, moving her to Florida, seeing to

KUOM: What were the events that led up to your daughter’s passing, and how did you manage your
grief? Kathia started getting worse, going in and out of ICU with kidney infections. Things did not get better. I
dealt with my grief by staying busy.

KUOM: How did you find the courage to dedicate yourself to bringing awareness to this disease and
your daughters story? I promised her everyone would know what this horrible disease did to her.

KUOM: Tell us about your article on Scleroderma, when we will be able to read it? Yes, I’m very
excited!! The story will be about Kathia and Scleroderma. It will be out on Wednesday March 16, 2022, in the
Florida Sun newspaper.

KUOM: In closing, what would you say is your favorite memory of your daughter? My memory of
Kathia is that she was a beautiful person, who died too soon.

facility in the NYC area that integrates industry leading production with education. Our suites
accommodate artists of all genres. The studio rents spaces for productions, music videos, special

Felix Natal Jr. was recognized in 2013 by The Southern Entertainment Awards as Photographer/Journalist of
Year. He began his professional career 20 years ago in Passaic, New Jersey. He's joined the team of the first
artist, newest member of the KweliWorks Faculty, and Family.
KUOM: Tell us a little about your childhood from being an at-risk youth, and heading down the wrong
path? My childhood was wild! I was getting in all sorts of trouble, which resulted in getting kicked out of
different schools. My mother worked at dry cleaners and a teacher from Bergenfield High School named Jerry
West was a frequent customer. My mother told him about me and the trouble that I was getting into. Her way
of offsetting my bad behavior was by asking Mr. West if he would teach me photography. So I took a few
classes with him and he took a liking to me. My grades were terrible, so he helped me get my grades up and
recommended that I go to community college first before applying to SVA or School of Visual Arts. In the
meantime he helped me build my portfolio and eventually I got accepted on academic probation.
KUOM: Who inspired you to become a photographer? My mother definitely inspired me to become a
photographer. She would always take a lot of photos when I was growing up. If you go to her house now you
would see nothing but collages of photos all over. So it’s safe to say that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
My mother was definitely protecting her cub by pushing me into a less hostile territory. I started taking a lot of
pictures with disposable cameras, so my mother told me that I had to do something with this talent. She really
believed in me and that I could be a photographer. She believed in me so much that we went to Peter's Camera
Shop to get my first professional camera. That was the summer of ‘93 and I’m so grateful that she did. It
changed my life forever.
KUOM: How did you become a world famous celebrity photographer that we know today? And who
was the first famous celebrity you photograph? It took a lot of years of hard work, sacrifice and dedication.
I’ve been blessed to be published & featured in hundreds of magazines, but the first celebrity that I photo-
graphed was multi-platinum producer Rich Nice of Trackmasters for Brunswick Times. The first rapper I
photographed for a publication was Ghostface Killah of Wutang Clan.
KUOM: How did you come up with the name "The Media City Studios?" I wanted to create a workspace
that was your ultimate 1 stop shop when it came to Media so I thought Media City would be the perfect name.
KUOM: You've been dubbed as "The Beast of the East" by the Hip Hop community for your work.
How did that name come about, and has it been challenging for you to keep up that reputation? The
name came about by working with two Beast of the East, in their own right, NFL Legend Brandon Jacobs and
Top 5 Dead or Alive Rap Artist Jada Kiss. I wouldn’t call it a challenge because I have been blessed to photo-
graph so many iconic figures and at this point of my life I am now focused on how I can advance these
younger creatives on the come up.

KUOM: You've worked with many famous A-List
celebrities. What has been the most challenging thing
about working with them? And is it hard working with
divas and superstars or getting paid? I’ve been blessed
where most of my experiences have been pretty good, but
if I had to say one thing, the hardest thing about working
with them is oftentimes it seems like they don't value your
time, because they are always late! I only had a handful of
what I would call negative experiences. I’ll share one… I
had a client tell a makeup artist to leave the set because she
didn't like how the makeup was looking. Mind you she just
started a few minutes prior, she insisted with the client to
let her finish first, but the client was headstrong on
demanding the makeup artist to leave. I felt so bad for the
makeup artist, because she left crying. As far as getting
paid, some will try to play you and say things like, “this
benefits you more than me” in order to get something for
nothing. So, like I said earlier you have to decide what
you're going to put up with. You can give them a test shoot
the first time, but after that you should be firm about what
your rate is. Don't be afraid to lose the client because 9 out
of 10 times they were not valuing you anyway. If they
believe in your talent they will pay you.

ly having one of the baddest women in the game step out of a magazine page and walk right into your life. I
clearly remember seeing her posted in pictures on the barbershop walls. Almost every guy knew who she was.
I never thought I would have a shot to do any work with her, but I was clearly wrong. The opportunity present-
ed itself and my career boosted to a whole other level from that moment on. I am very grateful for each and
every opportunity and memory in this game, because they all helped me to live a full life to provide for my
family.
KUOM: Where do you draw inspiration from during your shoots? Each situation is different, it comes
down to what the client wants to do. I like to see the wardrobe to get an idea, then I will do location scouting to
find the perfect canvas. I prefer to do location photography because it pops more and brings more life to the
image. But mainly I get my inspiration from the client(s) whom I’m photographing. I always feel that it’s a
team effort and although I may be the director, the client is the author.
KUOM: We notice you have quite a few shots of pregnant families. Is that one of your specialties or is
that a new trend? Yes, it's one of my specialties. As a family man myself, it brings nothing but happiness
when seeing an expecting mother have so much love and joy for someone she hasn't even met yet.
KUOM: June is men's health awareness month. How do you maintain inner peace in staying grounded
spiritually when facing inner conflict everyday? To be honest, I am still a work in progress. I am learning to
appreciate life more and intentionally take time out for myself. I am so used to working hard and grinding,
which has been the way I have functioned my whole life. But when I do get a chance to breathe I enjoy going
out and bike riding, spend time with my family and of course keeping a close relationship with my Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ.
KUOM: What are some of your self-care regiments that you do on a regular basis? Going to the gym,
swimming, walking, biking and trying to maintain a healthy diet as much as possible! Although my beautiful
wife makes it hard, because she is the dopest chef! Hands down! LOL!

KUOM: June is Caribbean Heritage Month. What does that mean
in terms to you from your Puerto Rican culture? To be honest I love
my Caribbean background. Although I wasn’t born in Puerto Rico like
my parents, they have instilled a lot of great family and moral values in
me. I have come to appreciate it greatly as I got older and started my
own family. June will always be a double blessing for me because that
is also my birth month.
KUOM: For those who may be embarrassed or shunned away from
where they came from, they have now adapted to the American life-
style. From your observation, has the culture inspired America or
has America inspired the culture? I feel America capitalizes on our
culture because of our spending power as a whole. It’s ironic because
we make the least and spend the most. We are very influential indeed.
You can look at this year’s NFL Half-Time Show and see the influence
our culture has, but it seems we enjoy the clout so much that we haven’t
recognized how to utilize the power of that influence effectively. Amer-
ica is the real “culture vulture”.
KUOM: For someone who wants to pursue a career in professional
photography. What are some words of wisdom you could share? I
would say always follow your dreams, heart and what you believe in. If
it’s meant for you, it will happen if you put in the work. If you're trying
to get in the music industry you have to have tough skin and understand
that initially you’re going to get used until you prove yourself, but maximize the opportunity to your advantage
as much as morally possible. Treat clients the way that you would want to be treated! It doesn't matter if it's a
celebrity or an average person, you need to treat them all the same.
KUOM: What three words describe Felix? Caring, Loyal and Driven.
KUOM: What's next for you? For one, I’m looking to expand on Media City by acquiring a larger location
while also looking to expand my real estate portfolio outside of Media City. I recently launched LEGEND IN
THE GAME clothing brand and started a Frenchie breeding dog business. There are some other ideas in the
works, but I can’t reveal all the intel just yet. LOL!
KUOM: Any final words you'll like to share we didn't cover? As I briefly mentioned earlier I have a
burning passion to advance this creative culture through inspiration and education of the young up and coming
talent. So, I am working very diligently on my non-profit organization called C.A.V.E. (Center for Arts and
Visual Education). I will be revealing more information in the near future about the organization and how we,
as a community, can get involved.

is His first publication was in 2015 when he published the Official Israelite Nation Holy Bible. This
would go on to become the best selling Israelite Bible in the world. He followed up by publishing a

works, many of which are utilized in his cause of nation building through the Axum Federation.

KUOM: Before we drive into our interview. As you know
the past few years have been challenging for many of us.
What challenges or obstacle(s) have you faced, and how
did you overcome them? My original obstacle was time.
When I first started publishing, I worked at a job that allowed
me time to publish. When I changed positions to work at the
corporate office, time became a factor. I literally felt I was
doing the work of three people. Still I utilized every spare
moment to continue publishing, keeping my eyes on the
prize. In the end, it paid off because I was able to quit my 9-5
job when the books began to do well.

KUOM: Although we have all been writers since grade
school, what inspired you to become an author? I was
motivated to write because I want to teach. I was doing a lot
of research into Biblical history and culture and decided it
would be a good idea to put my findings in my own published
Bible. I also worked at a low paying job at the time but I
loved what I did, it was meaningful work. For me to stay
working there and support a family, I needed another source
of income. Publishing these books gave me that added
income.

KUOM: Karajah, what transpired from being an author
to becoming a Publisher? While I loved to write, I also
realized there was a market for ancient and classic literature. I was also interested in helping up and coming
authors put out their work. Our slogan is, If you have a book in you, we’ll get it out of you. Publishing also
allows a greater diversity of works to be put out. I’m happy now to publish a lot of books that helped me in my
spiritual and mental development.

KUOM: To what extent was your “awakening” religious or spiritual when you wrote and published the
Israelite Nation Holy Bible, then followed up by publishing a variety of ancient Hebrew scriptures
including the Holy Bible: Rastafari Edition and Books of the Ethiopian Bible? My original ‘awakening’
happened in 2001, a few weeks before 9/11 happened. I felt God leading me on a particular path. After
meeting some Rastas, I began gaining a different understanding of the Holy Bible (I previously looked at it as
the white man’s book) and the laws within it. I then gained further insight into Israelite wisdom after meeting
my first wife in 2010. This led me on even further studies of Hebrew culture and history.

KUOM: Just like in business, you have to build a brand to attract clients, customers, and the public.
What steps are needed to build a brand and design or illustrate an eye-catching book people want to
pick up to become a bestselling author? It’s important to have an artistic eye. Many books that I publish
have at least five other books of the same title on Amazon. The cover is the first thing people see. They say
you can’t judge a book by its cover, but most people do just that. Using colors, images, and pictures that catch
the reader’s attention is very important. It is also important to have a niche. This should be an area or subject
that the author has passion for and knows a lot about.
KUOM: Please share a little about your Blackstone Publishing? As mentioned earlier, Blackstone Publish-
ing began with Bible books and ancient scriptures. Its purpose was to produce books of wisdom and enlighten-
ment. Through time, it diversified to include classical and historical books including such authors as Marcus
Garvey, William Shakespeare, Plato, WEB Dubois, Booker T Washington, Nat Turner, and Mahatma
Gandhi.
KUOM: How did the Axum Federation come about and what's its purpose? We are all familiar with the
bitter history for people of Afro descent living in both the Caribbean and the Americas. What many people do
not focus on today is how the descendants of slavery have Hegemenized into the political systems of their
captors. Unlike some Native American tribes, ‘Black’ people have not been recognized as a distinct nation
from European America. While the slave trade is now universally recognized as a human rights violation,
people of Afro descent have not received land or political power separate from the colonial powers with the
exception of Haiti. The Axum Federation is seeking that sovereign power which is a human right for people of
African American, West Indian, Afro Latino, and Black Indigenous descent.
KUOM: Karajah, what are some of your rituals you use to prepare before writing? I begin by meditating
and studying the subject I am writing or publishing. A recent work I am publishing is the Confessions of Nat
Turner, a book based on the testimony of Nat Turner when he was incarcerated. I strive to get into the mind of
Nat Turner, to understand his vision. I also do background research to learn as much about the person as
possible. It is also important to have a work space conducive to creating. This may look different for different
people. I use silence or quiet music and solitude.
KUOM: What advice or words of wisdom you've received from someone that stays with you today? The
most important words I have heard came from Christ when he says “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at
hand.” Ironically, these same words touched Nat Turner in his movement as well. I am always striving to
create heaven right where I’m at. I also want heaven for the world around me so these books help bring the
necessary knowledge to the people. I don’t want to wait to die to live in heaven. Like the late great Bob Marley
said “If you know what life is worth, you would look for yours on earth.”
KUOM: Karajah, you often hear that there are as many starving authors as there are starving artists.
What does it really take to become a profitable best-selling author or Publisher? To become profitable in
anything, it takes determination, dedication, patience, persistence, creativity, and truth. By truth I mean God’s
truth in its highest form of your understanding. I look at an artist such as Kanye West who’s first big single
was titled ‘Jesus Walks’. Many rappers at the time were talking about the same thing as everyone else; money,
women, cars, etc. In that song, Kanye said “They say you can rap about anything except for Jesus, that means
guns, sex, lies, and video tapes, but if I talk about God my record won’t get played Huh?” He took a complete-
ly different route than all of the other artists. Today, Mr. West is a billionaire, the richest rapper of all time.
The key is to tap into God within and produce your truth. The book of Psalms 37:25 states, “I have been
young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.” It might not
come right away. I had to work jobs that were far from what I really wanted to do, but persistence pays.
KUOM: June is "Men's Health Month." What are some of your regiments that you do to maintain self-
care and mental wellness? Also, from your perspective can you share some health tips men should pay
more attention to on a regular basis to maintain a healthy lifestyle? It is often and truly stated, health is
wealth. Money means nothing if our health is suffering. I take the well being of mind and body as a number
one priority.

This includes exercising at the gym 3-4 times weekly, eating a healthy vegetarian diet with occasional fish, and
doing yogic stretching and breathing. For my mental health I stay around people who are positive and sup-
portive as well as spending time in the solitude of nature to stay connected to the source. I often frequent the
Springs here in central Florida to find the peace that comes with nature and clean water. I definitely feel men
should recognize the importance of nature and deep breathing for mental clarity and peace.
KUOM: Finally, what next can we see from Blackstone Publishing? And, any final words you'd like to
share that we didn't cover? Blackstone Publishing will now be utilized more for the benefit of the Axum
Federation and nation building. Such documents as Child Support agreements, Bill of Divorcements, Birthing
Plans, and other important documents that were previously given into the hands of Colonial powers will now
be a part of Blackstone Publishing services. Blackstone will also publish news of Axum Federation programs
and ‘Black’ business information. All of this while continuing to help up and coming authors produce their
books.

KUOM: As you know these past two years have been challenging for many of us. What challenges or
obstacle(s) have you faced, and how did you overcome them? The biggest challenge for me is getting into a
new routine especially with changes happening constantly. One area that really ramped up is Electronic
communication. These 2 years I have learned to have multiple routines to adjust to life.

KUOM: What advice or words of wisdom have your parents or someone shared with you that will
remain with you today? My dad always said “If you are not going to do it, then don’t do it at all”.

KUOM: June is Caribbean American Heritage Month. If you
had to change three things that would help bring more aware-
ness to embrace and celebrate our beautiful culture? I know
this may be controversial but change it to a month. June is a
month when most children in the USA are out of school. I think
much of what we see celebrated is the food and culture. I would
love to see more emphasis on the people. Not just those who
shoulder we stand on but celebrating the future Caribbean
Americans doing great things. Others want to celebrate but don’t
know how. Maybe a unified theme that we celebrate around each
year would help to reach more people.
KUOM: If you had to cook a favorite dish for your family or
friends from your cultural heritage (Jamaica) what would it
be and why? I know this sounds cliché but traditional Jerk
Chicken/pork done the correct way with 3-4 hours of cooking.
KUOM: For those who may be embarrassed or shunned away
from where they came from, they have now adapted to the
American lifestyle. From your observation, has the culture inspired America or has America inspired
the culture? I was just having this discussion with a friend. I think this goes back and forth. I think the culture
has inspired America. We live in a time where the Jamaica air horn is prevalent and a Caribbean restaurant is
in practically every State. That is the influence.
KUOM: Xavier, you are a community leader and (the founder of one of the oldest web-based platforms
serving) the Jamaicans and the Caribbean American Diaspora. As we bring awareness to Men's Health
Month (June). In your own opinion, what are some of the health struggles our Caribbean American men
are facing today? And what steps can they take to make changes? I think one of the biggest obstacles to
Caribbean American men's health is ego. I know quite a few Caribbean-American men that refused to get their
prostate examined and later have prostate cancer. Our masculinity prevents us from just doing regular routine
check-ups and has led to negative consequences. Education can help but I think other men talking to their
friends & relatives can have a huge impact. I recently had a friend who called to let me know he was
diagnosed with prostate cancer and the next male friend I spoke with that day I asked them if he ever had his
prostate checked. I told him the news I received from a friend which brought context to my asking the
question. I was able to use the negative news to ask a positive question.
KUOM: A man’s mindset plays a role in being more proactive about their self-care regimens. Can you
share some of your healthy self-care regimens you do regularly? I do a mile walk/run at least 2-3 times a
week. I am also a member of the Jamaica Hi-5 exercise group that works out every Saturday. I drink mainly
water and have been cutting back on anything with too much sugar. I don't consider myself an extreme health
buff but I practice moderation.
KUOM: What does it mean to be a Man of Kulture 365 in terms of your heritage and inspire other men
like yourself? It's an honor to be considered a Man of Kulture 365. What it means to me is that given the
opportunity and support we can achieve great things in our community. However, we must always remember
to serve others first.
KUOM: Xavier, would you like to share any final words with our readers, we didn't cover? I enjoy
serving the Jamaican/Caribbean community and telling their stories on the Jamaicans.com platform. Everyone
has a story that can inspire others. No matter how simple you may think your story is, you should share it. My
pastor once said "You have a story that someone needs." There are so many great Caribbean-American stories
out there. I leave your readers with my favorite African proverb "Until the lion has his or her own storyteller,
the hunter will always have the best part of the story.”
