KUOMagazine.com 10 Official Men & Women of Kulture Mea Allman Master Life Coach: Mental Health Counselor & Practitioner & Self-Care Life Coach Some key things to keep in mind that will be significance of spending time with family during the holidays: Bonding and Unity: The holidays season provides an opportunity for families to come together, bond, and express gratitude for their connections that will foster unity, generosity, and appreciation for one another. Passing on Traditions: Sharing in long-held traditions is one of the most important aspects of the holidays. Keeping up with your family rituals/traditions can help tie you together to better honor them, side by side and continue passing on to the younger generations. Now that you're older, you'll get to create new ones with your family that will last a lifetime. Make it a Learning Experience: Involve your children in holiday preparations by making it a learning experience. For example, you can teach them about the history of your culture and traditions during the holiday you are celebrating, or about the culture of the places you have visited and how it may be similar to yours. Building memories as a child during the holiday season is important for fostering emotional well-being, creating a sense of belonging, and providing a foundation for positive memories that can last a lifetime. These memories can have a profound impact on a child's development and contribute to their overall happiness and well-being. THE IMPORTANCE OF CELEBRATING THE HOLIDAYS WITH FAMILY As we celebrate the holidays with family and friends, remember the importance for several reasons. During this time we remember the ones we've lost and the opportunity to strengthen or rebuild relationships between loved ones, and cherish those happy memories that are associated with more positive interactions many of us had with our parents and family as a child. Positive interactions between parents and children help children feel secure and valued, build their self-image over time, reduce the frequency of negative behaviors, encourage positive behaviors, promote a stronger family relationships, and contribute to their social and emotional development, and to express their gratitude and appreciation for life. During the holidays let's continue to create life-lasting memories of activities that we can do together as a family that doesn't cost very much and create lots of fun, laughter, and holiday rituals that will become meaningful to build a bridge of ordinary with the extraordinary that gives us a sense of purpose and belonging and cope through mental challenges so we can manage extreme emotions and stress. "If you have a family that loves you, a few good friends, food on your table and a roof over your head, then you are richer than you think." - Unknown

KUOMagazine.com 11 Official Men & Women of Kulture Declutter: Taking time to organize and declutter your living or work space can provide a sense of accomplishment and mental clarity. It's an important aspect of self-care. Make Self-Care a Priority: The holiday season is often associated with joy and celebration, but it can also bring about stress and emotional strain. Prioritizing self-care during this time is crucial for maintaining mental and physical well-being to manage stress, set boundaries, maintain physician health, embrace mindfulness, and prevent burnout. Taking time to disconnect from technology and the demands of the season can be rejuvenating. Unplugging can help reduce stress and promote mental well-being. Setting boundaries is a courageous practice by saying "no" and giving yourself permission for self-care. It's important to prioritize your own needs and emotional well-being, even during the busy holiday season. By incorporating self-care practices, individuals can navigate the festivities with greater ease and enjoyment. Incorporate Family Fitness: Incorporate the “Twelve Days” theme into a family fitness routine. Decide on one activity you can do together each day to stay fit — walk around the neighborhood and look at lights, jump rope to a favorite holiday song, or play a game of basketball while the pie is baking. Remember, celebrating holidays with family is important because it helps build strong bonds, express gratitude and appreciation, create life-lasting memories, provide comfort and security, and pass on traditions. KUOMagazine.com 14 Official Men & Women of Kulture Have you ever heard the saying “Getting old sucks?” Nobody wants to grow old, but getting older we must. The body starts to age at birth, but no one thinks of aging. The expecting mother watches as her body changes, counting the months and days until the baby arrives. Once the baby is born the first thing she does is count her baby’s fingers and toes, making sure that the baby is healthy. “Looking For Your Fountain of Youth” The mother’s next step is to work on her body doing everything she can to get back in shape. To gain that youthful body once again. As a woman ages, there are many things she must concern herself with; weight gain or loss, staying strong, eating right, staying healthy, and progressing through the stages of aging that lead to menopause. Menopause is a natural part of the aging process in which a woman transitions from her years of potential childbearing to her fully mature years free of this possibility. We all are looking for that fountain of youth. WHAT IS IT? EXERCISE! Exercise! Exercise has many benefits at all ages and stages of life, but especially as a woman ages. Exercise is her best friend. The body is meant to move; meant to get stronger; meant to build, even during natural breakdown. Lifting weights is the Fountain of Youth that has been proven in research and people's lives over and over and over again. Believe it. Be motivated by it. One noticeable change for women as they age is an increase in body fat. It is common to see a decrease in muscle mass, causing your body to feel less strong than it did in your youth. As women age, they can develop osteoporosis, and osteopenia, which is the beginning stage of osteoporosis. If you exercise and maintain your lean mass (i.e., muscle, connective tissue, bone density), you will stave off age-related conditions and diseases. Thus, the goal is to move and do it often. Weight-bearing exercise and resistance exercise are particularly important for improving bone density and helping to prevent osteoporosis. It helps with managing weight and increasing metabolism. Exercise will enhance your quality of life and help you maintain independence as you age. It helps to manage chronic conditions like arthritis or back pain. It boosts mental health and sharpens thinking skills. The Bottom Line: Strength training is a powerful tool for longevity that can improve metabolic, cardiovascular, and immune health, facilitate weight management, and body composition, and ultimately, enhance your quality of life and vitality. The fountain of youth, EXERCISE! EXERCISE! EXERCISE! Exclusive Interview LEE HANEY “8X MR. OLYMPIA….A MAN OF FAITH AND FAMILY “ Lee Haney, is a Legend, and an Icon in the bodybuilding world. At the age of 24, Lee Haney won his first Mr. Olympia title, and earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. Lee Haney was unstoppable, he took the bodybuilding world by storm when he made history as the first bodybuilder to win 8 consecutive Mr. Olympia titles. Lee Haney is regarded as the greatest bodybuilder to grace the Mr. Olympia stage. However, above all the titles and the fame, Lee Haney is a man of faith and family. He believes in giving back to his community. In 1992, Lee Haney and his wife Shirley started Haney’s Harvest House, a year-round mentoring program to nurture the lives of boys aged 8-17 years old. Haney’s Harvest House is a non-profit organization with the mission to help save a generation of at-risk young boys by teaching them character building, love for self and others, and respect for society. Lee Haney and his wife received the Centennial Award for their outstanding work associated with Haney’s Harvest House. Even though Lee Haney retired from bodybuilding, he continues to inspire and educate athletes around the world. Lee Haney created his own certification organization titled International Association of Fitness Science, and the Lee Haney Games, a NPC National qualifier bodybuilding competition to continue serving the fitness needs for people of all age groups. He published a book titled Fit At Any Age, a guide to age management fitness. Lee Haney has trained athletes and celebrities including Evander Holyfield, Gary Sheffield, and TV host Steve Harvey. Over the years, Lee Haney hosted “TotalLee Fit,” a fitness show on the Trinity Broadcast Network (TBN) and the Lee Haney’s Championship Workout (ESPN); he published three books: TotaLee Awesome, Ultimate Bodybuilding, and Beyond the Pump. He received a Lifetime Achievement award from former Governor and body-builder Arnold Schwarzenegger for his contribution to society as a whole. In 2014 Lee Haney was inducted into the International Sports Hall of fame. I met Lee Haney in 2012 in Miami, Florida with my partner Philip Michael Thomas (Miami Vice) when my daughter IFBB- Figure Pro Kamla Macko was competing in the Miami World Pro Championship. It was a special moment for all of us to meet Lee Haney. I am absolutely thrilled and delighted to interview Mr. Lee Haney for the KUOMagazine cover story. Continues on page 28 KUOMagazine.com 27 Official Men & Women of Kulture Written by Celebrity Vegan Chef Sandi Morais L-R: Kamla Macko, Lee Haney, Sandi Morias, and Philip Michael Thomas

KUOM: Mr. Haney, I want to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to do our cover story interview. Thank you Sandi for this wonderful opportunity. KUOM: My first question to you Mr. Haney. What inspired you to get into bodybuilding? When I was a young boy aged 6, I was inspired by the movie with the biblical character Sampson, and the TV character Hercules. I asked my parents for a set of weights when I was 11 years old for Christmas, and they got them for me. In the package that came with the weights was a Charles Atlas course with the fundamentals for weight training. I used that religiously to learn the fundamentals of weight training. I would go to the grocery store with my parents on weekends, and I would rush to the newsstand to get the bodybuilding magazines. In the magazines I found out about bodybuilders like Robby Robinson, Sergio Oliva, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bill Pearl, Bill Grant, Roy Callender and Darcy Beckles. They were some of the master bodybuilders. That is how my education began. KUOM: You competed in the 80’s, and during that time the overall physique of bodybuilders had a different look. Fast forward to the current time. What are your thoughts on the bodybuilding industry today? I believe the older physiques during my era, and the era before my time established certain standards. We needed to have the look like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Robby Robinson or Roy Callender. That was our goal. A small waist and polished muscle maturity. The physiques today appear to be rushed. The physiques today are more massive, but not so pleasing to the eyes, and not as polished with muscle maturity. Every era is in love with where they came from. I feel our era was the best. Today, the Classic Physique is looking more like the bodybuilder type, and that category is getting more popular. KUOM: You started the Lee Haney Games 9 years ago. What are some of the categories in the event? We have men’s Bodybuilding. We have Physique and Classic Physique. Those are the three categories in the men’s division. For the ladies, we have Physique, Figure and Bikini. We also have the Wellness category and the Fitness division. KUOM: In 1992, you and your wife Shirley started Haney’s Harvest House, a mentoring program for boys aged 8-17 years old. What inspired you to start Haney's Harvest House? We wanted to create a place to nurture the minds and hearts of young boys, particularly for women that don’t have men present in their homes. We wanted men in the mentoring program that are fathers, school teachers and working class men to mentor the young boys to show the boys a positive role model to impact the lives of the boys. It really started with me and my friend when we were coaching football for young boys. We would buy them tennis shoes. We did not win many football games, but we wanted to continue coaching the young boys, and that is how Haney Harvest House really started. KUOM: So, you have seen a lot of young boys graduate from the program? Yes, actually one of the young boys who graduated from the program, I spoke to him recently, he is a commander at Nato in Europe. Another young boy from the program was in the air force. He is a father of 2 kids. Many beautiful success stories have come out of the program. KUOM: Tell our readers about your certification programs. We have 3 different certifications. One is functional exercise, that deals with age management using dumbbells, ropes, and medicine balls. You can do the exercise in your home, and also it can be done in a group setting. That is the Functional /Basic Nutrition Certification. We tied it to the Minister of Fitness Certification. It is the same style of training like functional but for churches, synagogues, groups or individual leaderships with a religious organization. If they want to establish a Minister of Fitness in their congregation we can certify that person. We also have the Ultimate Bodybuilder Certification. That is my area with a squat rack, and bench press. This is a very strenuous type of program like what your daughter Kamla does. It is more personalized for the individual. We set it up with a study guide and video training tools. We offer the certification online, and it is valid for 2 years. KUOM: You have trained celebrities such as TV host Steve Harvey, boxing champion Evander Holyfield and baseball champion Gary Scheffield. How different is the training with the three men? The exercise for the boxer Evander Holyfield has to be explosive. I use ballistic type training to keep him explosive and maintain his power. KUOMagazine.com 29 Official Men & Women of Kulture KUOM Interview continues with Queen Afua The baseball player Gary Scheffield's training is similar to that of the boxer, a little tweaking sometimes, but they both need a certain type of training to keep them explosive. With Steve Harvey, it’s the basic bodybuilder type of training. KUOM: Let’s talk a little about health and wellness. You have a detox program. In your opinion why is detox so important for a healthy lifestyle? Well, I like to compare detox to your automobile. Every 5 thousand miles you have to take your automobile in for a tune up. You have to change the filter, get the jets cleaned, and change the oil. A tune up will help the car engine run better, and you get the best gas mileage. The body is the same way. The body needs a tune up. You have to clean the liver, the kidneys, the blood, the urinary system and the colon. Detox helps to energize the body. I started detoxing way back in 1982, at the Junior Nationals, and NPC Nationals. I have always known the importance of detox. KUOM: You published a book titled “Fit At Any Age,” tell us a little about the book. The book talks about functional exercise and nutrition. What I mean about functional exercise is not the kind where you are doing a bench press laying down. When you lay down on a bench, it’s not a true functional exercise. Functional exercise should be the exercise that helps enhance your overall functionality, because we push, pull, stretch, and we bend. That is the type of exercise that is shared in the book. It also comes with a functional exercise download video that you can order with the book. If you don’t maintain the type of exercise that helps with your everyday function, you will lose your health. In the book, I talk about functional exercise for managing age, and functional nutrition to repair the cells of the body, because they all work together. KUOM: I know you love the Caribbean Islands. What was your experience competing with Caribbean athletes? I have the greatest respect for them. I remember reading about Darcy Beckles, he had a 27 inch waistline. When I was a kid I looked up to him, and Roy Callender, I love Roy Callender, he had an incredibly muscular back. I did not compete against them, but I was on the same stage with them. Roy Callender and Albert Beckles are Legends. I learned a lot from them. They called Albert Beckles ageless. None of the guys from the Islands ever seemed to age. KUOM: I guess it’s the Island food. Talking about food, what is your dietary lifestyle? Well, a big portion of my lifestyle has been plant-based. When I trained for Mr. Olympia, and the NPC Nationals, I ate sweet potato, spinach, pineapple, papaya, bananas, beans, lentils, those types of foods. I would incorporate chicken, eggs and fish. I never ate beef, it takes too long to digest. It sits in the gut. Now that I am retired, my sources of protein include chicken, fish or eggs. I will eat those protein sources maybe once every two to 3 days. I include cabbage, quinoa, walnuts, beans, sweet potato, lentils, apples, pears, and Brazil nuts in my meals. KUOM: What are your thoughts on the plant-based lifestyle? Plant-based is the best. It is documented that people who eat plant-based food live 15 to 20 years longer. KUM: There has been a lot of controversy suggesting that a vegan bodybuilder cannot build muscles compared to a bodybuilder that eats animal protein. What are your thoughts? That is not true, look at the gorilla, he does not eat meat, and look how he grows thick and muscular. He looks great, and he has a calm persona. Look at the lion and tiger who are strictly meat eaters, in the jungle they are angry at everything. Look at nature, when God made Adam and Eve, he put them in the Garden of Eden with lots of fruits. KUOMagazine.com 31 Official Men & Women of Kulture KUOM Interview continues with Dr. Lane Rolling KUOM: What advice can you give men on how to take care of their health? Well, I love to speak to the hearts of men, and encourage them to take care of their health, and why they should take care of their health. I always point to the main reason why they should stay healthy. First for themselves, and then their family. If they can’t take care of themselves, how can they take care of their family? I encourage men to take care of their health because in this economy, if you get sick, you get poor fast. Please men take care of your health, because your health is your wealth. KUOM: You have been inducted in the International Sports Hall of fame, and you are in the Guinness Book of world records. With all the awards and trophies, what keeps you grounded? You know Sandi, I attribute that to my relationship with Jesus Christ. I pray everyday. I ask for wisdom and peace. My faith tells me I am never alone. I also know that as a follower of Jesus Christ, my life is one that should be used to elevate the people around me, and be a light to the rest of the world. KUOM: There is a breakdown of family values in our society today. What advice would you give men regarding family values? Family is the greatest institution. God established a plan on the earth from day one, particularly to men. God said in the book of Genesis, be fruitful and multiply, and replenished the earth. He also said to man, it is not good for man to be alone, so I will make you a helpmate. Once man connects with the right woman that God ordains for him, the greatest blessings will happen to him. There is a link on my website with a video that says “Mission Man.” I put it on my website so men can go and see the video and understand what their job is on the earth. If man align themselves with the will of God, everything else will fall into place. KUOM: What inspirational words would you like to leave with our readers. Take charge of your health. You are what you eat and the company you keep. Eat live food and stay around positive people. Say a prayer everyday. If God is for you, nothing can stand against you. KUOMagazine.com 33 Official Men & Women of Kulture am awed and inspired by 10-year old Mariann Morgan, the winner of the 2022 Peter Gracey “THIS IS JAMAICA” (TIJ) poetry scholarship competition. As an educator and poet, it gave me so much pleasure to watch Miss Morgan perform with such confidence, grace, determination, and patriotism. Despite her small stature and tender age, her video rendition of Mr. Peter Gracey’s poem "This is Jamaica” was riveting and filled me with a mixture of pride and excitement. It demonstrated her obvious talent and presence. Miss Morgan attends Redwood Primary School, Kingston, Jamaica, where she excels academically. The principal Mrs. Evanne McCoy gushed with pride at Mariann’s achievement and attributes her success to the school’s supportive environment that encourages and inspires excellence in its students. The school also credited and praised Mr. Gracey's "This is Jamaica" Poetry Scholarship Competition for affording Mariann the opportunity to showcase and highlight her talents. Due to her achievement as first place winner last year, administrators decided to honor her by erecting a mural at the school. Making her the youngest student to be portrayed on a mural at Redwood Primary. On November 2, 2023, the Mural was unveiled at Redwood Primary School, and is a glorious testament that hallmarks her outstanding achievement as winner of the competition, and as the 2022 Ambassador for “This Is Jamaica Foundation Inc.” A special thank you to Peter Gracey Reality company for sponsoring the mural. The 2023 TIJ Board Members, under the leadership of President Ms. Adrianna Clark, and its Founder Mr. Peter Gracey expressed tremendous pride and admiration for her outstanding efforts. Well done, Mariann! I commend your achievement and look forward to seeing what the future holds for you. KUOMagazine.com 38 Official Men & Women of Kulture Remember Our Fallen Warriors “Richard Roundtree” My interview with Richard Roundtree was inspiring and motivating. He had a great sense of humor and an incredible personality. I was honored for the opportunity to interview such a remarkable individual, who brought us so many wonderful years of entertainment. Richard Roundtree began his acting career in his home state New York City, and worked with Ebony Fashion Fair and toured 79 cities. He starred in a succession of off Broadway shows as Jack Johnson in The Great White Hope. Richard knew he enjoyed the spotlight way back when he was on a football scholarship at Southern Illinois University, and he was determined to follow his dream. It was not until he landed the role of John Shaft in the critically acclaimed movie Shaft, that he gained international fame. The success of the move brought attention to Richard’s talent as an extraordinary actor and his career sky-rocketed. Richard went on to star in films with some of Hollywood’s legendary actors, Inchon with Lawrence Olivier, Man Friday with Peter O’Tool and City Heat with Clint Eastwood. Life however was not smooth sailing for Richard. In 1993, Roundtree was diagnosed with breast cancer, and subsequently underwent a double mastectomy and chemotherapy. When the doctor told Richard he had breast cancer he was devastated. He immediately went into denial. To his knowledge breast cancer is a female disease. “It was a big punch in the stomach, the first realization,” said Richard. He did not know what to do, or how to deal with such a tragic situation. He had to draw on his inner strength and call upon a Higher Power to help him fight his battle.

KUOMagazine.com 39 Official Men & Women of Kulture His father, who is a religious man, was a tower of strength for him. After going through the different emotions of anger and denial, he finally came to acceptance. In reaching acceptance he was able to cope with the help of his wife, children, family and friends. Also, with his own faith and determination, he was able to go through the necessary treatments, and lucky for him, he pulled through successfully. Richard believes he has been given a Second Chance, and he has dedicated a portion of his time hosting charity events to raise awareness and money for cancer research. “Cancer is not gender specific and can strike at any time,” said Richard. He believes that education and early detection plays a very important part in dealing with this disease. Richard is back to doing what he loves. He recently finished shooting Al’s Lads, in England, Corky for Disney Pictures, Hawaiian Gardens, with director Percy Adlon and AntiTrust, with Tim Roberts. The movies are set to be released mid-summer or fall of 2001. In May of 2001 Richard will have his first annual Celebrity Golf and Tennis tournament in St. Croix. The money raised from the event will go to breast cancer research. I was very sad to hear that on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 Roundtree died of pancreatic cancer at his home in Los Angeles, at the age of 81. He will be greatly missed in he entertainment and movie world among to family, friend and fellow actors. An Icon that will never be forgotten. Written by Debbie J Jarrett Are you baking Christmas Cake this year? Of course! Of course! That's the basis of our Jamaican Christmas cheer!! Christmas cake is amongst Jamaica's most cherished traditions! It's more than a cake, it's the magnet that fills homes with loving conditions. Remember when we were kids peeping in the kitchen? The baking pans, the aroma, and the laughter were everything!! Mummy and Grandma knew we were waiting to lick those bowls. It was a loving gesture that filled our precious souls. The fruits were soaked all year in wine and rum. When baked, there was a unique texture that made you know it was done. Cake slices were served on special crystal plates. Joined by dainty forks and beautiful Christmas serviette. To seal the deal came our traditional Christmas Sorrel drink. Happiness echoed as we sang carols and watched the Christmas tree lights blink. Baby Jesus was born on Christmas Day. For this reason, we celebrate, dine, and pray. So please have a slice of Jamaican Christmas Cake with ease. It brings love and joy as mystic as our Christmas Breeze. On behalf of KUOMagazine, I want to say a special thank you the Debbie J. Jarrett for sharing this special poem “The Jamaican Christmas Cake,” also know as black cake or fruit cake, which is a beloved tradition during the Christmas season in Jamaica and Jamaicans in the United States like myself.
