Introduction
Performing is amazing. It’s amazing how it changes people. It’s
amazing how shows and plays make people understand and realize the
world around them. It’s amazing how song makes people smile or laugh
or cry. It’s amazing how dancing can help someone express their
emotions. It’s just amazing what performing does to a person.

The dance is over, the applause
subsided but the joy and feeling will
stay with you forever. 〜 W.M. Tory

together are called bands. When you
listen to songs on the radio, you are
listening to bands. Bands play music and
singers sing songs to entertain you.

Dancing

Dancing is moving your body in a fun or graceful way the either music or
singing. People dance at competitions or just for fun, too. Some famous “just
for fun dances” are the disco, the floss, and the chicken dance.

Acting is when you pretend to be someone you are not to entertain
people. Most professional actors or actresses go to acting school to learn how
to act as different types of people and to learn more about acting.

This scene is from the play
Peter Pan. The people in this
scene are acting for the
audience’s pleasure.

Who Performs?

Anyone can perform. If you want to become a singer, a dancer, or an
actor, you can take singing, dancing, or acting lessons and or join a community
play. Ask your parents if you want to do one of these things.

Why Do We Perform?

Most people perform because either they like to entertain people or they
like to sing, act, or dance. I perform because I like to do these things and it
makes me happy when I see that I have brought joy to other people.

How Performing Has Changed

Back in the 1500’s, William Shakespeare wrote plays that are still pretty
famous. Back then, his plays were performed by actors, and still today his
plays are performed.

But things like music, songs, and bands, they have changed immensely
over the years. If we just look at the year 1900, music was mostly classical
music. In the 1950’s and 1960’s, music was more “danceable”, and a bit
heavier. Now music and songs are more electronic.

Dancing has changed though, too. Back in the year 1900, people ballroom
danced. In the 1950’s and 60’s, people’s dancing was more excited. Now, we all
dance in different styles according to the song we are dancing to.
