Abstract:
Purpose. To determine whether the level of awareness of senior high school students on COVID-19 will
improve through a vlog.
Design/Methodology/Approach. This study used quasi-experimental research design. It was conducted
during 1st Semester/School Year 2020-2021 at Pili National High School, Sariaya, Quezon. 39 out of 71
senior high school students were able to participate in this study. Pre-test and post-test results were
computed using mean and frequency-percentage distribution, and t-test for their significance.
Findings. The t-Test between before and after the respondents watched the vlog showed significant
results. Therefore, the vlog that the researcher created was helpful in improving the level of awareness
of respondents on COVID-19. Recommendations are use vlogs to conduct a study on the level of
awareness of students in different grade levels on COVID-19 for safety and health purposes; create
different topics about COVID-19 for an action research and/or learning materials; schools may conduct
a COVID-19 awareness drive using creative, fun, and informative vlogs; and create their own official
COVID-19 vlog for their DepEd Tayo Facebook Page for information dissemination and promotion of
guidelines in health protocols for parents and students.
Research Limitations/Implications. The sudden and unexpected increase of COVID-19 cases in the
research locale has made the making of the vlog and the survey challenging. The number of respondents
was limited due to poor or lack of Internet connection.
Originality/Value. This study may interest teachers to use vlog as their alternative learning material or
tool to teach their students. This can also be a strategy to disseminate information about COVID-19 in a
fun and interesting way.

Title COVID-EO: Improving the Level of Awareness of Students on Covid-19 through
a Vlog
Purpose To determine whether the level of awareness of senior high school students on
COVID-19 will improve through a vlog.
Brief Introduction The global pandemic has been experienced by millions of people around the
world since early 2020. Coronavirus disease (Covid-19) is a threat to mankind
because it spreads widely and quickly bringing along life-threatening illnesses,
deaths, lay-offs, and economic despair. Everything has stood still and seemed like
life has stopped especially in the early months of 2020. To safeguard the health of
people around the world, health protocols have been implemented. In the
Philippines, the government implemented health protocols and laws. They have
been adjusted according to Covid-19 status in the Philippines. Senior citizens and
children have been prohibited to be outside their houses. People are aware of this
law and health protocols. However, some people still do not follow or even respect
the laws and health protocols regarding Covid-19.
It is very important for people to know about the threat of Covid-19 so
that they can prevent infections from this life-threatening virus that is why
governments worldwide implements laws to prevent the spread of this deadly
virus. However, there are people who do not like to abide by the rules set by the
government. There have been 54 teenagers (aged 17 and below; 21 boys and 33
girls) were caught due to violations, such as curfew, physical distancing and
quarantine according to Municipal Social Welfare Development of Sariaya,
Quezon since 2020 until March of 2021. Unfortunately, when health protocols are
crossed, people can be infected with Covid-19. According to Saefi et al. (2020),
poor understanding of COVID-19 can contribute to an increase in the number of
COVID-19 cases. In Sariaya, Quezon, 12 teenagers (4 boys and 8 girls) out of 331
cases had been infected by COVID-19. Hence, students should know the health
protocols and follow them religiously. They may know about wearing of face

masks, face shields, and applying alcohol but the question is as to what extent is
their awareness on Covid-19. This question prompted the authors to investigate on
the level of awareness of students on Covid-19. Since the researchers created a
vlog that they won in a school competition, they would like to know whether a
vlog will improve the students’ awareness on Covid-19.
Statement of the Problem:
This study sought to answer the following research questions:
1. What is the level of awareness of respondents on Covid-19 before
watching the vlog in terms of:
1.1 history
1.2 symptoms
1.3 prevention
2. What is the level of awareness of respondents on Covid-19 after watching
the vlog in terms of:
2.1 history
2.2 symptoms
2.3 prevention
Brief Review of 3. Is there a significant difference between the level of awareness of
Related respondents on Covid-19 before and after watching the vlog?
Literature/
Studies Participation of the public is an important and most effective approach for
controlling the spread of COVID-19. However, considering its novel nature, it is
important to create awareness among the public to be able to take timely preventive
measures. On the contrary, misinformation and myths from online communities
result in severe damages in mitigation of this novel disease (Alanezi et al, 2020).

In order to prevent and avoid those misinformation and myths, there should be an
effective and reliable source to disseminate proper and right information to assure
the awareness of the people, like how World Health Organization (WHO) along
with the Government of various countries are making steps and providing regular
and necessary information to prevent COVID-19 as well as the misinformation
through their Pass the Message: Five Steps to Kicking Out Coronavirus campaign
(WHO).
During epidemics and pandemics, a gap in knowledge about the emerging
disease can cause chaos and panic among the public. Distributing the proper
information can not only guide society through such events but can also increase
epidemic preparedness that might occur in the future. In addition, negative
attitudes and practices towards new infectious diseases can aggravate epidemics
which may eventually result in pandemics (Alahdal et al, 2020). Knowledge have
always been a foundation, being aware is essential to avoid consequences and
worsening of situation.
Teenagers nowadays as part of Generation Z is engage on Social Media, it
is where they mostly acquire knowledge and information. On the cross-sectional
survey that Abdelhafiz et al, 2020 conducted the mean knowledge score about
COVID-19 was 16.39 out of 23, gained mainly though social media (66.9%), and
the internet (58.3%). Due to the ease of access in viewing, YouTube videos, like
vlogs, have been extremely popular in the recent years. Vlogs have become a trend
to disseminate and source of information on COVID-19. According to (D'Souza,
et. al., 2020), they must are a source of information and YouTube is an important
platform for disseminating medical information. As Szmuda et. al. (2020) stressed,
it is not surprising that in recent years it has become an important platform for
patients in finding educational information about their disease.

Design and Research Design
Methodology This study used a quasi-experimental research design. The data were
obtained from respondents’ pre-test and post-test results.
Research Locale
This study was conducted at Pili National High School in Barangay Pili,
Sariaya, Quezon where the researchers study General Academic Strand. It has a
population of 1,038 students during School Year of 2020-2021.
Population
The study used the entire population of senior high school students as
respondents. However, only 39 out of 71 senior high school students were able to
participate in this study due to Covid-19 physical distancing protocol and poor or
lack of Internet connection.
Research Instrument
The study used a validated researcher-made questionnaire by the research
adviser and school nurse.
Data Gathering Procedures
Permission from Mrs. Maribel M. Alcantara, Principal I of Pili National
High School was secured before conducting the study. Once the permission
approved, the researchers took time to study COVID-19’s history, symptoms, and
prevention. The researchers divided the tests into three parts: history, symptoms,
and prevention. A total of 30 items for both tests (pre-test and post-test). Google
form was used to administer pre-test. After getting the results of the pre-test, the
researchers created COVID-EO which is a vlog that disseminates information
regarding COVID-19’s history, symptoms, and prevention. After which, the
researchers administered the post-test with the vlog that was embedded in the
survey form. The vlog was linked to YouTube. Once the post-test was done, the

“Outstanding”; 56% got “Very Satisfactory”; and 8% got “Satisfactory”. With a
total mean of 88 with a verbal description of “Very Satisfactory” in terms of their
awareness on COVID-19 before watching the vlog. This result revealed that
respondents had a very satisfactory level of awareness on COVID-19 before
watching the vlog. However, there were individual scores that were satisfactory
that needed to be higher because they should be more aware of this deadly virus.
As pointed out by (Tripathi et al, 2020), people should be really aware as it is
critical to improve the awareness and preparedness of the targeted community
members, because citizen engagement during times of crisis is crucial for
understanding public priorities and concerns, while minimizing mass panic, fear,
and anxiety (Chen et al., 2020).

Conclusions 1) The level of awareness of respondents on COVID-19 before watching
the vlog had a total mean of 88 with a verbal description of “Very
Satisfactory”. This revealed that the level of awareness of respondents
on Covid-19 before watching the vlog high. However, there were
respondents who got “Satisfactory” in the pre-test results which means
that their awareness on COVID-19 may improve through the vlog.
2) The level of awareness of respondents on COVID-19 after watching
the vlog had a total mean of 95 with a verbal description of
“Outstanding”. This revealed that the level of awareness of respondents
on Covid-19 improved after watching the vlog.
3) The t-Test between before and after watching the vlog showed
significant results. Therefore, the vlog that the researcher created was
helpful in improving the level of awareness of respondents on COVID-
19.
Recommendations 1) Future researchers may conduct a study about the level of awareness of
students in different grade levels on COVID-19 for safety and health
purposes using a vlog.
2) Teachers may create different topics about COVID-19 that they can use for
an action research and/or learning materials.
3) Schools may conduct a COVID-19 awareness drive using creative, fun, and
informative vlogs.
4) Schools may create their own official COVID-19 vlog for their DepEd
