So You're Ready to Breed...

You have a mare you want to breed. You have a reputable repro vet and have discussed a breeding plan.
You have determined which stallion you want for your mare. Now here are a few things you need to do
to increase your chances of success.

Plan ahead and establish a dialog with the stallion owner. Read the breeding contract so you understand
the terms, and verify any information that is unclear. Each contract is slightly different, so always read
the contract carefully!

1. Semen Availability.
2. Collection days and times, and how much advance notice is needed for shipping.
3. Are there any dates during the breeding season that the stallion will be unavailable – shows,

clinics, etc?
4. Live Foal Guarantees. Is it offered? What are the terms?
5. Collection and shipping fees.
6. Shipping Container Fee/Shipping container deposit.
7. Please take note of time zones and how this may affect communication.
8. What is the preferred method of communication with the stallion owner, and for you as the mare

owner?
9. Will the breeding manager ship again if the mare does not get in foal? Is there a limit to the

number of collections/shipments (or doses in the case of frozen semen) per season or in total for
the contract?
10. Must the breeding be used in the current breeding season?

We cannot stress the importance of communication with the stallion owner throughout the breeding
process. Both of you, the mare owner and the stallion owner, want the same thing: a successful breeding
and healthy foal! With careful planning, great communication, and a little luck it will happen.

Registration Information

The Irish Draught is a rare and endangered breed, and as such, every horse is a valuable asset to the
herd. It is only through conscientious efforts of breeders and owners to register their horses that we can
continue to have accurate and reliable data regarding our herd and their progeny. A registered horse
means the horse has been DNA typed to at least one parent, have pictures and marking sheets for
identification purposes, and an accurate date of birth. Having a registered horse also increases your
options for breed classes and awards, as well as garnering a premium price by providing accurate
information should you decide to sell. Registering a foal provides the best pricing, so register early!
Forms can be found at www.irishdraught.com/registration

A special thank you to all the breeders for keeping the barns full of these
magnificent animals. Go Irish!
