Greenville (SC) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated The Greenville (SC) Alumnae Chapter, formerly Gamma Lambda Sigma Chapter, became a reality when six women applied to the Regional Director for a charter in 1947. Charter members and officers of Gamma Lambda Sigma Chapter were Sorors Floried Coleman Mack (President), Carrie M. Thompson (Treasurer), Henrietta Young Bradford (Recording and Corresponding Secretary), Inez Sheppard (Journalist), Blanche W. Zimmerman (Sergeant-at-Arms), and Fannie H. Martin. In 1949, the chapter’s first Jabberwock, “Echoes for a Mardi Gras,” was held April 21,1950. It provided firsttime scholarships, enabled annual donations of Negro literature to the local McBee Avenue Branch Library, and supplied books to Westside and Brewer High Schools. In 1951-52, the chapter supported the clothing drive for the Tuskegee Rehabilitation Center, held Job Opportunities Fairs, conducted a weekly Charm Personality School at the Calhoun Street YWCA, donated Thanksgiving baskets to the needy, and organized Christmas parties for children at Shriners Hospital for crippled Children and the Cedar Springs School for the Deaf and Blind in Spartanburg. The 1950s and ‘60s included visits from notable Delta personalities such as Patricia Roberts Harris, Edythe Tweedy, Dorothy I. Height, and Mary McLeod Bethune who spoke at the dedication of the first Black high school in Greenville in 1969. This era also saw the formation of a bi-racial committee by Soror Alberta T. Grimes that resulted in the first Head Start Program in Greenville County. During 1956 through 1978, the chapter continued its involvement in the Teen Lift programs for young girls, which exposed them to cultural and educational opportunities. From 1978-1984, the chapter was actively involved with participation in the Phillis Wheatley Tutoring Program and the establishment of Summit II, which focused on teenage pregnancy. In 1981, the chapter presented its first Senior Citizen’s Day and its first College and Career Fair. During the 1986-88 sorority years, the local PanHellenic Council was established with Soror Mayes as one of its charter members. In March 1989, the first Men Who Cook fundraiser was presented to the community, with over 30 men sharing their culinary skills. During this time, the chapter was very involved in voter registration and received recognition from Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., for recruiting the highest number of new voters. In June 1991, the chapter hosted for the first time the South Atlantic Regional Conference. In attendance at the conference were several notable personalities including National President Yvonne Kennedy, Dr. Gloria Scott, Dr. Jeanne I. Noble, Ruby Dee, Ossie Davis, and Micki Grant In 1992, the Social Action Committee established and presented its first Social Action Humanitarian Award, the Heritage and Archives Committee awarded its first Faithful to Delta Award, and the Arts and Letters Committee contributed more than 300 books and magazines to the Mt. Pleasant Community Center. From 1992-1994, the “Men Who Cook” event continued to be successful and provided funds to the United Negro College Fund. The chapter also continued its involvement with Delta A.D.A.C.E., which began in 1990 as part of Summit IV with emphasis on AIDS education. In 1999, the Social Action Committee initiated Parent and Child in Step (PACS). There were 16 consultants and resource personnel who designed and presented parent workshops for effective parent-school communication and the improvement of academic and behavioral performances of children. In May 2000, the Social Action Committee received a grant from our National Chapter History

More than 300 parents were served in six elementary schools. During that same year, the Arts and Letters Committee sponsored Grammy Award winner Lenny Price at the Phillis Wheatley Center. To provide scholarships for deserving high school seniors, the chapter also sponsored the Ebony Fashion Fair Fashion Show (2003 - 2009) for several years. The 60th anniversary of the GSCAC was celebrated in 2007 with a gala event at the Carolina First Center. Several local and state leaders attended, and the date was declared “Greenville (SC) Alumnae Chapter Day” by State Senator Ralph Anderson. In 2008, the chapter hosted the SouthAtlantic Spring State Meeting. The chapter celebrated its 65th anniversary in December 2012 in grand style at the TD Convention Center. The chapter continues to reach and touch the lives of both female middle and high school students through its continued commitment to the Delta Academy and Delta GEMS whose mission is catching the dreams of tomorrow by preparing young women for the 21st century. The chapter has also committed itself to the national initiative Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence (EMBODI). EMBODI is a program designed to bring focus to the crisis of African-American males not reaching their fullest potential educationally, socially, and emotionally. The EMBODI committee has conducted workshops on various topics including violence prevention. As well as establishing a partnership with Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., the committee has also established a partnership with the Generations Boys Group Home, a group home committed to working with adolescent and pre-adolescent males who are in need of specialized services for abusive behaviors. In 2011, the chapter established its annual Red Shoe Scholarship Luncheon, where attendees adorn their best red shoes in an effort to raise money for scholarships. To date, the Red Shoe Scholarship Luncheon has awarded over $60,000 to Greenville area students. The chapter remains active in its participation with the South Carolina Department of Transportation’s Adopt-a-Highway, the Upstate Black Expo, the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, IMPACT Day, Voter Mobilization and Registration Campaign, and Delta Day at the State Capital, among other activities. The chapter also presented “Making the Grade” sessions during Greenville County’s observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday. In addition, the chapter has been recognized on both the local and national levels with awards including the Distinguished Partnership Award from Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Organization of the Year Award from Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and a National Recognition Award for IMPACT Day. The Greenville (SC) Alumnae chapter has continued to make an impact in the Greenville Community through its many programs, events, and unyielding commitment to serve and transform lives. The 100th year of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was celebrated in 2013. The GSCAC participated in many Centennial events throughout the year, including Founders Day Celebration, the reenactment of the Women’s Suffrage March, and of course, the 51st National Convention. The convention attracted 40,000 members and generated nearly $75 million for the Washington, D.C. area. That same year, the GSCAC hosted the Mock National Convention, welcoming over 400 Deltas from across the region to Greenville, South Carolina.
Greenville (SC) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated Chapter History Continued... In 2017, the GSCAC celebrated its 70th anniversary with a salute to our Charter Members during the 2017 Red Shoe Scholarship Luncheon, a prayer breakfast at Thornblade Club, and the chapter’s inaugural fundraiser Dancing with the Delta Stars. In 2018, GSCAC hosted a statewide Founders Day celebration with then-current National President Beverly Smith as our guest speaker. The event hosted over 500 Deltas from across the state. In 2020, a global pandemic brought about a massive change for the entire nation. COVID-19 plagued the world, but the work of Delta did not cease. The chapter had to monitor and adjust to unique situations. In-person meetings could no longer be held to conduct the business of Delta. New technologies and methods of communication had to be taught and learned by so many; however, the Deltas rose to the occasion. For the next two fiscal years, the chapter continued to conduct Delta business in a stellar fashion.Community programs, celebrations and activities were still held. COVID-19 protocols and procedures were strictly enforced, but the mission to serve was still the goal. Tonight, May 18, 2023, the Greenville (SC) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta hosts its 10th annual Red Shoe event with the Sequins & Sneakers Red Shoe Scholarship Gala. The chapter has been serving the Greenville community steadfastly for 77 glorious years. Thank you for coming out to celebrate the sisterhood, scholarship, service and social action that is Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, INCORPORATED. As the GSCAC chapter continues to grow, we will continue our many great works of public service throughout the Greenville Community.
