He was born and raised in Kampung Saring, a small village in Kelantan, East Malaysia. His father, Panglima Munas was a man well-known in the village for his Silat fighting skills, learning Silat from his father, Tok Samad who was a famous Silat master in the district and later on diving deeper into the arts with Panglima Puteh, one of the royal guards at the time. This lineage of Silat knowledge was later passed on to Tok Janggut and his brother, Mat Tahir. Their father, Panglima Munas, was a widower after his wife died giving birth to Mat Tahir and was offered by Sultan Long Kundur to live in the palace with his two sons. Long Kundur loved the two boys and took care of them like his own son, Tengku Salleh (who grew up to be Sultan Muhammad IV of Kelantan) and the three boys grew up together. They received religious, Silat, and military training from the best teachers in Kelantan. At the age of 30, Tok Janggut went to Mecca to deepen his knowledge of Islamic studies
Warrior Leadership Warrior Leadership Tok Janggut was feared not just for his fighting abilities, but his ability to gather men under his banner and unite them with a single vision. This scared the colonizers and made him a primary target for their forces to get rid of. Fearing that another rebellion would be started, the British soldiers strung up the body of Tok Janggut and paraded it around town to show the people what happens to those who defy Britain. Leadership is never an easy game, and many times it can get you a bullet in the heart, sometimes physical and sometimes not. But the threat is very real nonetheless. From Tok Janggut’s experiences we can derive several leadership lessons that are as applicable to war as they are to our daily lives. Tok Janggut, being a native and a religious scholar, knew that the British system was oppressive and a burden to the people. He also knew that the ministers and royals were blinded by the bribes given by British forces at the time. Just because someone is in power, doesn’t mean that they are always in the right. Tok Janggut knew this and stood up for what he believed was right even though it cost him his life. Another important lesson from his life is to understand the importance of having your tribe to support you. One man cannot become an army by himself. But one man, with the right leadership skills, can create an army that can be lead towards a greater cause. The key to making it work is loyalty and vision. Tok Janggut had both. And managed to successfully bring together thousands of warriors to face the tyrant of the time without ever being betrayed by his men or betraying them in turn. Dataran Merdeka
Dataran Merdeka Figure 3 PEMANDANGAN DARI ATAS KAWASAN DATARAN MERDEKA YANG DIKELILINGI BANGUNAN PENTADBIRAN PADA ZAMAN DAHULU Accession Number 2005/0050090W Dataran Merdeka, also known as Merdeka Square, is an iconic landmark located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This historic site holds a profound significance in the nation ' s history, particularly in its journey toward independence. Originally known as the Selangor Club Padang during the British colonial period, Dataran Merdeka served as a cricket ground and social venue for British expatriates. The adjacent Selangor Club, affectionately called the "Spotted Dog, " was a central gathering place for the British community. The true historical importance of Dataran Merdeka was cemented on August 31, 1957. On this day, Malaysia, then known as Malaya, declared its independence from British rule. In a momentous ceremony, the Union Jack was lowered, and the Malayan flag was hoisted for the first time, symbolizing the birth of a new nation. This event was a culmination of years of struggle and determination by the Malaysian people to achieve selfgovernance and sovereignty.
Dataran Merdeka Since that historic day, Dataran Merdeka has become a focal point for national celebrations and events. It hosts the annual Merdeka Parade, a grand spectacle showcasing Malaysia's cultural diversity and national pride. The square is not just a reminder of the past but also a place where Malaysians come together to celebrate their shared identity and progress. In contemporary times, Dataran Merdeka continues to be a site of political and cultural significance. It stands as a testament to Malaysia's journey from a colonized state to an independent nation, reflecting the resilience and unity of its people. The square's well-preserved colonial architecture juxtaposed with modern buildings around it also symbolizes the nation's ability to honor its history while embracing progress and development. Dataran Merdeka is more than just a physical space; it is a powerful symbol of freedom, unity, and the enduring spirit of Malaysia. It reminds Malaysians of their past struggles and achievements, serving as an inspiration for future generations to cherish and uphold the values of independence and national pride. Completed in 1897, this iconic building was designed by British architects A.C. Norman, R.A.J. Bidwell, and A.B. Hubbock, and named after the reigning Sultan of Selangor at the time, Sultan Abdul Samad. Its design is a striking blend of Indo-Saracenic, Neo-Mughal, and Moorish architectural styles, reflecting the diverse cultural influences present in Malaysia. Originally constructed to house the British colonial administration, the Sultan Abdul Samad Building served as the offices for several important government departments, including the Federated Malay States administration, the judiciary, and later, the superior courts of Malaysia. The building's strategic location along Jalan Raja and its proximity to other significant landmarks, such as Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square) and the Royal Selangor Club, underscored its importance in the colonial era.
