Welcome to our final concert at the Venice Performing Arts Center this season. On behalf of everyone at The Venice Symphony, thank you so much for your support. Because of your enthusiasm and appreciation of this fine orchestra, nearly every concert this season has sold out and more residents and visitors have had the opportunity to experience our Symphony. I know you’ve been asking about the 2023- 24 concert series, our 50th anniversary season! If you purchased tickets for a concert this past season or submitted a brochure request, the 2023-24 season brochure is in the mail to your home. We are also sharing Troy Quinn’s celebratory program on page 7 of this concert book and in our digital program book. There is plenty of time to return your request for season tickets and packages and it is not too late to become a concert sponsor. For more information, stop by the Friends information table in the lobby. While our concert season is officially over this weekend, you will still have the chance to see our orchestra. On April 28, the Symphony returns to team with the renowned Cobre Mariachi Band for Noche Unidos, a unique and exciting concert benefiting UnidosNow, at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Center. Many of you already have tickets for our fourth annual Patriotic Pops Concert at CoolToday Park on May 27. Don’t miss your chance to see Troy Quinn lead the orchestra in a concert of great American music and a moving tribute to our Armed Forces, followed by our biggest fireworks display ever. Tickets to both concerts are still available. Also in May, The Venice Symphony Youth Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Nicolás Real and Concert Strings Director Nicole Rawley, will present its final concert of the season on May 3 right here at the VPAC. That concert is free to the public and we hope everyone comes out to support these talented young musicians. As always, visit our website and watch your email for Symphony news and upcoming events. The Venice Symphony office is open year-round and we encourage you to stop by. As our season closes, I want to thank The Venice Symphony Board of Trustees, staff and volunteers for their time and dedication. Thank you to our exceptional musicians who bring world-class music to Venice. Thank you to everyone who has donated to The Symphony this season, allowing us to continue to bring you that world-class music and our core education programs. Thank you again for being here today. Have a wonderful summer and we cannot wait to see you for our 50th season! Sincerely, Christine Kasten, President and CEO 2022-2023 Season • TheVeniceSymphony.org • 1 WELCOME

10 • 2022-2023 Season • Tickets: 941-207-8822 PROGRAM NOTES Piotr Tchaikovsky wrote the music to the ballet The Sleeping Beauty in 1888 as a commission for St. Petersburg’s Maryinsky Theater, 13 years after his first ballet, Swan Lake. The Valse (waltz) is danced in act one as Princess Aurora celebrates her 16th birthday and is introduced to her suitors just before she pricks her finger and falls into a 100-year sleep. The ballet premiered at the Bolshoi Theatre in January 1899 and one year later in St. Petersburg. It was not performed in the U.S. until 1937. While it was more well received than Swan Lake, Tchaikovsky died in 1893, before what he called “perhaps the best of all my compositions,” would be acclaimed as one of the finest ballet scores of all time. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote Flute Concerto in G Major, K, a work in three movements, in 1778 on a commission by amateur Dutch flutist Ferdinand De Jean. Mozart was hired to compose three concertos but he would only complete two and De Jean refused to pay Mozart the full commission. De Jean had also requested “short, simple concertos” and music historians have offered that Mozart’s were too complicated for De Jean. Sir William Walton (1902- 1983) is considered one of Great Britain’s most important and influential composers of the 20th Century. Growing up, he studied piano and violin and sang in his father’s choir. He attended Oxford University and began his career as a composer in his 20s. By the 1940s Walton had written music for many films including Major Barbara and Hamlet. He would go on to compose symphonies, operas, vocal music and the oratorio “Belshazzar’s Feast.” The Wise Virgins Suite is a one-act ballet based on the biblical Parable of the Ten Virgins. Walton’s score is inspired by the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. It was first performed in 1940 by London’s Royal Ballet, choreographed by Frederick Ashton and starring the legendary Margot Fonteyn. The significance of the song “Over the Rainbow” with music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by E.Y. “Yip” Harburg cannot be overstated. Written for the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, “Over the Rainbow” would go on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song and forever be associated with star Judy Garland. The American Film Institute named “Over the Rainbow” as the Greatest Movie Song Ever and it was voted the Greatest Song of the 20th Century by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Recording Industry Association of America. However, “the greatest movie song ever” almost never happened. MGM executives removed “Over the Rainbow” at a preview of the film because they felt it slowed the movie down. After Associate Producer Arthur Freed demanded the song stay, Studio Head Louis B. Mayer is said to have replied, “Put it back in the picture. It can’t hurt.” For more program notes, see your digital program.
