in October 2016.
Management Information Systems (MIS)
The University’s Management Information Systems (MIS) is updated to provide
Management and other stakeholders with institutional statistics at a glance. This is
done through the developed dashboard reporting environment for ease of
reporting. Management and other senior officials within schools are registered on
the portal for self-service functionality. The system is updated with 2015 3rd
submission data as well as 2016 provisional first submission HEMIS data.
POWER HEDA project Support Plan and licensing
The IDSC (Power HEDA service provider) continues to support the University’s
Management Information Systems (MIS) unit in the maintenance of the system
mainly due to its lean staff capacity. As part of the POWER HEDA support project
plan between the University and IDSC (POWER HEDA service provider), the 2nd
round of training will target the School Administration functions mainly for “self-
help” services on the pre developed reports for ease of access to institutional
data that support their function. The training date is yet to be scheduled in
consultation with the Registrar’s Division.
Power HEDA license and Service Level Agreements for 2017 financial year were
sent to the University’s Legal Department for scrutiny and has been sent to IDSC
for acknowledgement and signatures. The modules enrolled for 2017 are as
follows:
x POWER HEDA Reporting
x HEMIS Data warehouse
x ITS views Data warehouse
x Student Tracking
x HEMIS Manager
x Annual Performance Plan Monitor (APPM)
x Academic Workload Model and Time sheets
x Business Plan Generator

bring about student success. Funding for the project was granted to Wits University
by a US based organization, the KRESGE Foundation and they decided to partner
with the University of Venda and Limpopo respectively. All efforts in the project
are directed at bringing about student success in the previously disadvantaged
and underprepared student using data analytics.
Data analytics capacity in the three (3) institutions is developed through training
and coaching session, funded by Wits through Kresge funding with the exception
of travelling and accommodation.

ACADEMIC DIVISION
Strategic Matters
Conversion to a comprehensive university
Agricultural Engineering
Preparations for offering BSc Eng – Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering are
underway with the first intake of students at the start of the 2017 academic
year. The Department of Agricultural Engineering has submitted staff
requirements for the BSc Eng to HR for Council consideration and creation of
new position.
Diploma in Freshwater Technology
The Department of Zoology will produce its first crop of Diplomates from the
Freshwater Technology Diploma programme at the end of the year.
National Review of the LLB Programme
The National Review of the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Programme at the University
of Venda by a Peer-Review Panel under auspices of the Council on Higher
Education (CHE) took place from 11 to 13 October 2016 in the Council
Chambers at the University of Venda. The process went very well and members
of Executive and Senior Management, Management of the School, academic
staff, administrative staff, students and alumni were interviewed. The report is
expected at the end of the year or the beginning of 2017.
Teaching and Learning
e-Learning
Student Information System Integration
Educational data were extracted from ITS and integrated in Blackboard
learning based on the business process requirements and integration
configuration documentation approved in 2015. This means that henceforth,
student and staff accounts can be created and made available to relevant
users.
59 | P a g e
Staff and Student Training
e-Learning taining sessions for academics were conducted at the library on the
20th, 21st, 27th and 28th of July as well as on the 17th, 18th, 24th and 25th of August
2016. The maximum number of staff members trained in a session was 150. In
addition, requests for undergraduate and postgraduate student training were
also attended to.

Online Courses
A total of 19001 courses were created on Blackboard for both the first and
second semesters, of which 449 courses were active from July until October
2016. These are represented below.
Number of page and course views
On average, 12052 views by both students and instructors were recorded from
July-October 2016, of which 4042 views were specifically on courses. Below is a
diagrammatical representation of this.

Student support
Living and Learning mentors
Since the beginning of the second semester there has been an influx of referrals
from Living and Learning mentors to Academic Development Unit (ADU). These
mentors referred ‘at risk’ students to educational development practitioners for
assistance. Referred students were assisted through assigning them to
academic mentors and engaging with module lecturers as a way of
enhancing their learning. A follow up meeting is to be held with these mentees
during the second week of October 2016. An advert for tutoring/mentoring
2017 was sent out and the closing date for applications to reach the relevant
office is 31 October 2016.
The Companies & Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC)
SCCDU conducted an education awareness workshop with CIPC on the 12th
of September 2016. The aim of the workshop was to create awareness on
Intellectual Property (IP), inform students about the value of protecting their
ideas, how to protect them from being copied, how to make their assets visible
in the market and how to commercialize their ideas. The workshop was not well
attended and the total number of attendees was 19. The reason for poor
attendance was due to different activities that were taking place on the very
same day. Arrangements were made with the facilitator to conduct the
workshop again next year.
Univen Collaboration with NYDA: Entrepreneurial skills workshop
Student counselling and Career Development Unit (SCCDU) in collaboration
with the Department of Student Affairs hosted a workshop on entrepreneurial
skills on the 19th of August 2016. The aim of the workshop was to empower
students with entrepreneurial skills. More than 70 students had an opportunity
to interact with NYDA officials on how to start, grow and sustain a business. In
addition, students were highlighted on how to meet funding requirements.

Staff support
Induction of new staff
One of the core functions of CHETL is staff development. To this end, our new
staff induction programme is the first step towards this. Here, CHETL focuses on
academic staff, the aim being to familiarise them with our teaching and
learning environment. The induction programme was held on the 17th to the
19th of August 2016 at Tshipise resort. Topical issues presented by CHETL’s Staff
Development Practitioners were: The evaluation of teaching practice,
Portfolio development, Developing a learning guide for students, University
teaching and assessment, Theory and practice and E-learning and career
focused Education.
Work Integrated Learning (WIL)
There have been consultations with UNIVEN’s Academic Schools regarding the
development of career focused programmes. These consultations were based
on the requirement of Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) components in
developing career focused programmes. It was agreed that for the diploma
qualifications with 240 credits, a minimum WIL credit should be 120. The manual
for integrating WIL into the curriculum for career focused programmes was
developed and has served at School Boards. Another activity that was agreed
on was the conducting of trials for student placements in career focused
education programmes. Thus, during the months of June-July 2016, the career
focused education practitioner worked with the Tourism Management
Department (School of Economic Management Sciences) in piloting the
placement of students studying tourism programmes. Out of 34 students in this
programme, 18 (53%) were placed at surrounding hospitality facilities. This was
done to identify strengths and challenges to be faced by both the School(s)
and students in their placement programmes. Further, a pilot project was
conducted in order to develop and adopt a proper, suitable and relevant
framework for the placement of our students in 2017.
Evaluation of teaching and learning
Lecturers’ teaching is evaluated by students from time to time. From mid-July
to the first week of October 2016, the report template for Students Evaluation
of lecturers was reviewed and revised. A new filing system for evaluation
reports was designed. Moreover, 23 student evaluations requests were
received from staff. Staff Development Practitioners processed all the
evaluations for analysis.

Enrichment Project for First-time Lecturers with First- year modules
This project involves a plan for the training of First time- lecturing staff who
lecture first year students at Univen. The purpose is to conduct an audit of such
lecturers in each School, assess their needs and present them with an
intervention training programme to improve their teaching, at the same time
hoping to reduce the failure rate among first-year students. It is hoped that the
project will be piloted in one of the Schools in early 2017.
Research
Postgraduate gathering 26-28 July 2016
Professor O Totolo and Professor GE Ekosse
Professor O. Totolo, the Vice-Cchancellor of
Botswana International University of Science and
Technology (BIUST), a research-driven man who is
well respected and recognized in Botswana, was
one of the guests who addressed the gathering.
Professor Totolo gave a well-articulated lecture on
quality and quantity of post graduate supervision
and enrolment in the SADC region, giving a history of education in the SADC
region in the post-colonial years. He described South Africa as rich in
knowledge and influential in the success of education especially in Math,
Science and Technology.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor of BIUST, Professor D. Norris gave a lecture on
overcoming challenges in post graduate education in Southern Africa, in light
of the crisis of only one percent of post-doctoral enrollment across Africa. He
emphasized the need for more linkages for post graduate research and study,
and for a quality instead of a quantity based postgraduate enrolment. He also
gave an expansive lecture on the solutions to problems in SADC post graduate
education, citing examples from Botswana and BIUST as a case study.
The Director of Research and Development: Office of the Premier, Ms. J Mokobi
gave a presentation on the Limpopo Provincial Research agenda. She
explained the objectives of the Limpopo Development Plan, a five-year
strategic plan and its themes, and encouraged the postgraduates to come up
with strategies for the eradication of poverty, inequality and unemployment.
64 | P a g e
She concluded by saying that research is the most powerful tool to be used to
change the lives of the people of Limpopo.
Ms. N Dube, the Director of Reviews and Evaluation from the National Research
Fund (NRF), gave a presentation on the NRF review and evaluation processes
for funding in research and postgraduate education in South Africa. She also
gave a word of encouragement to the attendants by giving her life story and
how she overcame all obstacles she met. Professor Lukhele-Olurunju (Director
Research, University of Mpumalanga) spoke on how to identify a suitable
supervisor. She identified it as a crucial step to successful research.
Group photo of Masters and PhD students attending the postgraduate gathering
The Director for Research in B.I.U.S.T, Professor E. Selaolo spoke on the need to
be passionate about any project in order to succeed. He gave illustrations of
the Kalahari Research Group approach that he is part of in Botswana. The focal
point of his presentation was the execution of a project and the need to plan
and execute it in phases. He explained that the formation of research teams
and integrating members in the research process is essential for the execution
of a project, as it is not easy to complete it on one's own.
The post graduates were reminded of the Research Support they have at their
disposal in particular, at the University of Venda Library. Mrs Mulaudzi explained
and described the available information resources in the library. Professor
65 | P a g e
Samie shared his history and experiences as a former post graduate student in
the University of Venda as a way of motivating and encouraging the post
graduates to forge ahead in their studies.
For the first time, the University of Venda also included Honours students in the
annual postgraduate gathering. The Honours students were hosted at a special
event on 26 July, with the theme Sustaining Excellence in Postgraduate
Education at UNIVEN.

66 | P a g e
masters and PhD supervisors and promoters, respectively, as part of the
proceedings included developing a roadmap to excellence in academic
activities in the School and improvement in postgraduate training and viva
voce.
In his opening and welcome speech, the Dean of the School, Prof. J.O. Odiyo
highlighted the expectations of the University of the Adjunct Professors and
Professors of Practice in terms of postgraduate training, research,
collaborations/partnership, enhancing industrial liaison and promoting positive
image of University of Venda. The Adjunct Professors and Professors of Practice
highlighted the varied contributions each of them has made including
identification of research niche areas for postgraduate training in the School,
contribution to publications in DHET accredited journals, postgraduate
supervision, encouraging the School to become part of the Vhembe biosphere
research initiatives dealing with environmental issues and as ambassadors of
the University in promoting attraction of quality students and employability of
University of Venda graduates. The engagement was quite robust and
promises to strengthen research, teaching and learning, and community
engagement in the School. The Professors of practice had concern that it
would be better to use them in teaching and learning to promote work
integrated learning where they have a lot of practical experience that would
promote the readiness of the students for the workplace.

of Hydrology and Water Resources attended the official launch of the South
African Young Water Professionals Limpopo on the 10th October 2016 at the
LEDET Auditorium in Polokwane. There were also representatives from the

The event was preceded by a workshop to nurture skills required by graduates
who want to venture into entrepreneurship.
YWP-ZA is a network of people who are passionate about all aspects of water
and its intrinsic linkages to people, economies, development, nature, dignity
and life itself. The committee is particularly passionate about helping people in
the early stages of their studies and careers to find their “professional home” in
the South African water sector, understand and explore the challenges and
opportunities of the sector, build the skills they need to be influential
contributors to the sector and develop meaningful networks that will provide
the insight, support, access and opportunities needed to build exciting,
meaningful and challenging careers. The University of Venda branch is looking
forward to organise an open day session on the theme “Let’s talk about water”
with an invited guest speaker from the UK.

Mr H Chikoore) and two students (Mr NG Xulu and Mr SB Ngwenya) who are
Members of the iDEWS Project and who are contributing their research to this
