01 Sentence Clues

Reading Part 1

In Reading Part 1, you will read sentences describing a certain word and fnd a

correct match for the description among three choices. The description sentences
are usually about things or concepts familiar to young learners in everyday
contexts such as the names of things, states, and actions. The best way to study

for Reading Part 1 is to make a habit of using an English-English dictionary. For
example, you can look up a word in an English-English dictionary and study how
the word is explained in the dictionary.

Sample Question

1. A piece of art sits on this thing before getting placed on a wall. The job
of this thing is to hold the art in place while the artist does his or her
work. It is usually made from wood. Some might even consider it a
piece of furniture.

What is it?

(A) Table

(B) Shelf
(C) Easel

Answer & Comment

As the name suggests, the sentence clue question gives a number of clues to find the
right match among the options. For some questions, one one my need to read through all
the clues. In the above question, we can see a number of clues pointing to the word “(C)
Easel” such as “... to hold the art in place”, “... made from wood” and “... consider it a piece of
furniture”. While all the options above are made of wood and considered to be furniture but
only (C) Easel fit the clue “... to hold the art in place”. Hence the correct answer is “(C) Easel” .

Sample Question

2. A difficult or dangerous or scary moment has just passed, and the
conclusion was luckily a good one. It is what you hoped would happen.
Now you feel happy because the danger has passed.

You feel _____________.

(A) relief
(B) courage

(C) happiness

Answer & Comment

Some sentence clue questions are presented with a blank like the above. The question asks
what you feel when “A dangerous or scary moment has just passed…” and adds that you
“...feel happy because the danger has passed.” In both clues mentioned here, the ordinary
feeling we expect to have should be “(A) relief” rather than “(B) courage” or “(C) happiness”.
Thus the correct answer is “(A) relief” .

Reading Part 2

Broadly speaking, there are two types of texts in Reading Part 2. The first type of

text is information contained in various forms of visual media such as invitation
cards, schedules, charts, posters, graphs, instructions and diagrams. With the first
type of question, you are asked to find and interpret information contained in
such media. The second type of question requires you to answer questions after
reading different types of standard reading materials such as letters, stories, and

paragraphs on academic topics. For the second type of question, you need the
ability to locate information throughout the text. For example, a single piece of
information may be spread over multiple sentences. Moreover, you need the ability

to find information that is not directly mentioned in the text. In the overview of
Reading Part 2 below, we will look at two representative question types of Reading
Part 2: a poster and a long fictional story.

Read the invitation. Answer questions 1 to 4.

Listening Part 1

In Listening Part 1, you will hear sentences describing one of the three pictures
and find the best match for the description. The description you will hear might be

about a person doing a particular action or a teacher giving an instruction to his or
her student. The usual format of the questions in Listening Part 1 would be to ask
you what the person or student in the picture would do next, and to find the best

option among the pictures.

Sample Question

Script
N: Listen to a teacher talking to a student in a school yard.

M: It’s quite hot out here Steven and you’re not wearing a hat. It’s actually

a school rule to wear a hat outside at lunchtime. But anyway, instead of
playing here, why don’t you play your game in the shade. There’s some
shade underneath that building you can use.

Q. What did the teacher tell the student to do?

1.

(A) (B) (C)

LISTENING Part 1

Answer & Comment

The teacher tells the student to play in the shade because it is a school rule to wear a hat
outside at lunchtime. Option (A) is incorrect because the student is outside without wearing a
hat. In Option (B) the student is wearing a hat but he stays on in the playground even though
the teacher told him to play in the shade and it is assumed that he doesn't have a hat. Thus
the best matching picture for the instruction is Option (C) where the student is playing in the
shade underneath a building.

Sample Question

Script

N: Listen to a teacher talking to a student.
W: John, the previous class has been in this art room and not cleaned

up again. I think they were painting pictures on the tables. Look at
the bright yellow paint blobs on the table. Could you get a cloth and

clean the table so we can have our art class?

Q. What did the teacher tell the student to do?

2.

(A) (B) (C)

Answer & Comment

The teacher says that there are bright yellow paint blobs on the table left from the previous
art class. She then asks the student to get a cloth and clean the table. Thus the best matching
picture for the instruction is Option (C) where the student does exactly what the teacher told
him to do.

04 Details in Conversation

Listening Part 2

In Listening Part 2, you will hear a conversation between two people and answer

the question. The question is repeated before and after the conversation. Reading
the main question before you listen to the conversation would be helpful for you to
predict the context of the conversation.

Sample Question

Script
N: Listen to a conversation between a teacher and a student at school.
Listen for the answer to this question: What will the boy do next?

W: Hi, Brian. It’s nice to see you but you’re in the wrong classroom. You
should be in Room 225.
B: Oh, really? But Mrs. Henry, my schedule says that I have science right
now in here.

W: That’s usually correct, but today, there’s a special schedule due to school
sports.
B: Oh, OK, thanks for telling me. I’ll go to the other classroom now.

Q. What will the boy do next?

(A) Go to Room 225
(B) Check his schedule again
(C) Go to the school gym

Answer & Comment

A question asking to predict what will happen is a common question type in the conversation
part. Thus it is helpful to focus on what is being asked and what the reaction of the
conversation partner to that request is. In the above conversation, the teacher tells the
student to go to Room 225 because the student is in the wrong classroom. In the last part of
the conversation, the boy thanks the teacher and says that he will go to the right classroom.
Thus what the boy will do next is “(A) Go to Room 225” .

Sample Question

Script
N: Listen to a conversation between a teacher and a student at school.

Listen for the answer to this question: What does the teacher want the
boy to do?

B: Teacher, someone spilled a drink on the carpet!
W: Oh, no! Trent, could you go and get some things from the office to clean

it up?
B: Yes, of course, Miss. What things should I go and get?

W: Good question. The drink is on the carpet, so get some baking soda and
some salt and maybe some tissues, OK?

B: OK, give me five minutes, I will hurry.

Q. What does the teacher want the boy to do?

(A) Clean up the carpet
(B) Go to the office
(C) Be careful about the drink

Answer & Comment

The student opens up the conversation saying that someone spilled a drink on the carpet. The
teacher then tells the student to go to the office and bring the necessary items to clean the
carpet. In the last part of the conversation the student says he will hurry to the office. Thus
what the teacher wants the boy to do is go to the office first and then bring some cleaning
materials. Thus the correct answer to the question is “(B) Go to the office” .

Listening Part 4

In Listening Part 4, you will listen to two types of listening passages: stories

and academic lessons or talks. Each listening passage comes with three or four
questions. You need to first figure out what the main idea of the talk or story is
about. Once you understand the main idea of the listening passage, you need to

focus on the logical connections of the facts mentioned in the passage.

Sample Question

Script
N: Listen to a teacher talking in a classroom.

W: When many people think of a desert, they may think of the hot Sahara in
northern Africa, which is the world's most famous desert. Yet deserts are

not always hot like the Sahara. And even the Sahara is not always hot.
It is in the day, sometimes reaching temperatures above 40 degrees,
but at night temperatures get very cold, and can fall below zero. It can

get so cold that people can die if they are not properly protected. Thus
deserts experience extreme changes in weather.

Some people argue that a desert doesn’t have to be hot at all. They say
there are actually "cold deserts.” According to them, Antarctica, which
is made entirely of ice, is the world's largest desert. Another large cold

desert is the ice cap of Greenland.
Interestingly, while a desert is essentially a very dry place, whether it be

hot or cold, every desert will get some rain, however little. For example,
the Atacama Desert, which is known for being the driest place on Earth,

gets about 15 mm of rain per year. That tiny bit of rainfall, if it falls in
places like Antarctica, Greenland, or deserts in high mountains, will fall

as snow.

LISTENING Part 4

1. What is a good name for this lesson?

(A) Surviving in the desert

(B) General features of the desert
(C) Different types of deserts

Answer & Comment

A question asking about a possible topic of a listening passage is a common question type
in listening sets. It is advisable not to confuse topics with details. In the passage above, what
is mainly discussed are some general features of the desert. Options such as “(A) Surviving
in the desert” or “(C) Different types of deserts” are just presented to add some more details
about the desert. Hence the correct answer is “(B) General features of the desert” .

2. What is true about all deserts?

(A) They are hot places.

(B) They are dry places.
(C) They get plenty of rain.

Answer & Comment

According to the passage, there are cold desserts too, e.g., Antarctica, so (A) is incorrect.
Option (C) is also incorrect because deserts like the Atacama Desert has tiny bit of rain
throughout the year. However, all the deserts in the passage are introduced as dry places. The
correct answer is therefore “(B) They are dry places.”

3. What is the danger of deserts at night?

(A) Not having enough water
(B) Not having enough clothing

(C) Getting too wet

Answer & Comment

In the first paragraph of the passage was the warning “It can get so cold that people can die if
they are not properly protected.” Thus, the correct answer is “(B) Not having enough clothing” .
