ADVENTURE
Lesson 1 GPS

Have you ever been hiking in the mountains and gotten

lost? What did you do? Did you have a compass to guide

you? Did you have a map but didn’t know where you were
on it? If this has ever happened to you, then perhaps you

should buy a GPS device to assist you.
The Global Positioning System, GPS, is used to tell you

where you are. A GPS device uses signals from satellites to

calculate its position . The more satellite signals, the more
accurate it is. They are very accurate and can pinpoint a

position to within 5 meters.

GPS is used in many applications these days. One of

these is satellite navigation devices. These devices use your

position to show where you are on a map. They also can
navigate for you. You just tell the device where you want to

go and it will guide you. They are great for using in cars

8 Lesson 1

hike map
calculate position
accurate landmark
when traveling to new places, especially when traveling in directions common sense

other countries which use different languages. However, they
can sometimes take the adventure out of getting lost.

The military uses GPS for guiding missiles. Scientists
use GPS for many experiments such as studying

earthquakes. Planes and ships use GPS to navigate. People

searching for sunken treasure at sea can pinpoint their
location, so they can go back later and gather any treasure

found. There are no landmarks at sea, so GPS is very useful.

Relying only on a satellite navigation device for travel

or hiking can sometimes be dangerous. Sometimes the maps

or directions given are wrong or not a good choice. Some
people have died because of this. Clearly, when relying on

devices, you should also use your common sense . Mostly

though, GPS is a great tool for getting around and having
adventures.
