RED’s Message “Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can
transform the world” and this is what we are all celebrating
for the month of September and the rest of our life as we
celebrate International Coastal Cleanup.

This collective intention truly inspires us to work together
in improving the condition of our waterways towards
promoting public health and safety. The DENR together
with the Filipino people enjoins the global coastal cleanup
celebrations through the international coastal cleanup to be
held every 3rd Saturday of September.

Paquito D. Melicor, Jr. Annually, the Philippines is always among the top countries
with the most volunteers, but as we are already aware, the
OIC, Regional Executive Director covid-19 pandemic requires us to limit social contact and
DENR7 mass gatherings. In this light, DENR is looking forward
to safely celebrate the 2020 ICC with our partners and
stakeholders.

It is noteworthy to mention the directives of our Honorable Environment Secretary Roy A. Cimatu
during his recent visit to Cebu city to clean up our waterways and major water bodies as Cebu is
considered as one of the most visited provinces in the region.

Rivers and water bodies are sources of joy as it provides life support systems to humans as well as
other living organisms. Children or even adults enjoy frolicking in the pristine waters of a river.
Memories are created while kicking up their heels and let their hair down in a river. However,
human-induced factors and stressors have put pressure and threats on rivers. An unclean or filthy
river limits its character as the lifeblood of the earth and the human civilization as they act as drainage
channels of surface waters, carry water and nutrients through great distances while serving as habitat,
and provide food for many organisms.

The DENR has been articulating the need to clean up the esteros and other waterways that sit astride
urban centers and other populated areas. Most of our rivers and their tributaries have become stagnant
because of the volume of silt wastes and other debris and have become a continuing threat to the
health and safety of the riverside communities.

Essentially, we need to advance stronger working relationships and improve coordination mechanisms
with local government units and other stakeholders in performing more active roles in arresting and
reversing environmental degradation on our rivers.

This journey of seeing our rivers cleaned again is quite an uphill challenge but the DENR is optimistic
that we can do it collectively with shared responsibility.
