History of Ministry of Tourism Arts and
Culture

In 1959, the Department of Tourism was founded under the Malaysian Ministry of Trade. The
importance of the tourist industry in the national economy has been highlighted by its
inclusion in the 2nd Malaysia Plan, which ran from 1971 to 1975.

MoCAT was divided in April 2004 to create the Ministry of Tourism Malaysia (MoTour),
which is responsible for all tourism-related matters. This initiative demonstrates the
government's commitment to boosting tourism as a major source of revenue for the country.

Following the 13th General Election on 15 May 2013, MoTour was renamed the Ministry of
Tourism and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC). This is to highlight the importance of the tourism
and cultural sectors working together to promote Malaysia as the world's favourite tourism
destination, as stated in the phrase "Malaysia, Truly Asia."
