CARRIE By: Stephen King Stephen King’s “Carrie”is a book that covers the life of Carrie White, a teenage girl with telekinetic abilities. Carrie has a tough life inside and outside of school with her extremely religious mom and getting bullied at school. This one girl wants to make Carrie’s life a living hell by humiliating her in front of everyone in prom night, as she was not able to attend her senior prom for bullying Carrie in the first place. In the climax of the story, Carrie reaches her limit and unleashes her abilities on everyone and ends up causing a catastrophe. The book mainly issues the problems that bullying, isolation, and abuse can cause on a person. Character study: Carrie White is the main character in Stephen King’s novel ”Carrie”. She is very shy and introverted. She gets bullied all the time by her classmates and goes home to a crazy, overly religious mom which makes her life worse than it already is. She ends up figuring out she had telekinetic abilities and starts learning how to use them throughout the story. Though Carrie has her powers, throughout the story she tries to fit in and be normal but it never ends up happening due to the people around her being so ignorant and cruel. She ends up going to prom and being a victim of a prank and being laughed at by everyone, leading her to crashout and make a disaster. Carrie’s character, analyzed through a psychological lens, reveals a deeply traumatized individual coping with isolation, abuse, and the emergence of telekinetic abilities. She employs defense mechanisms like repression to manage her trauma while grappling with the complex dynamics of her relationship with her mother. Maftuhin states, “The result shown that psychological conflict of the main character was caused by her mother’s treatment since she was born. She is an overprotective mother who always limits every move and action of Carrie” (Maftuhin 7). Carrie’s telekinesis serves as both a coping mechanism and a manifestation of her unconscious desires for control and agency. As her psychological state deteriorates, culminating in a catastrophic breakdown, she becomes a symbol of the human psyche’s capacity for resilience and vulnerability in the face of adversity.
