CAIRO FROM ABOVE

Did you know that the Cairo Tower has been the highest standing structure in Egypt and North
Africa for the past 50 years?
MLS students of grades 9, 10, and 11 were given the chance to rise to the top of the 187m
concrete giant this winter. Coincidentally, the weather on the day of the visit was both incredibly
cold and incredibly windy, making the experience all the more surreal. Cairo appeared remarkably
beautiful from such a height, all of its insane traffic and crazy energy seeming from above to have
evaporated. No wonder it’s the second most popular Cairo landmark after the Giza Pyramids!
Following the cityscape observation (and the blasts of wind) the students were taken out
to lunch, sealing this feast for the eyes with some food for the stomach.

Hanya Nosseir dazzles MSAMUN

After her week-long participation in the MSAMUN,
The Bulletin grabbed the first chance for an exclusive
interview with the new American Division big shot:
Grade 12 student Hanya Nosseir.
First of all, we discovered that she was the only
one selected from MLS to join the MSAMUN – and she
hasn’t stopped talking about how fun, motivating and
organized the simulation was. She explained what a
challenge it was for her to be there alone, with none
of her friends or acquaintances around her, and how
it ultimately rendered her more independent; it even
helped her tremendously get her research done! It
taught her to cooperate with different people and
learn to interact beyond her circle of friends. As
Neale Walsch once said, “Life begins at the end of
your comfort zone,” and Hanya’s experience proved it.
She even socialized with delegates to win the debates
(“caucusing” in UN jargon) – constantly chattering about MLS, just like our “ambassador”. Her
chair said her performance was absolutely extraordinary.
Although she initially felt clueless, she eventually ended up winning “Best Delegate”,
“Best Delegation” (China) and was chosen to head the MSAMUN team once she joins college.
She will visit schools to impart her acquired knowledge and experience and describe how she
was chosen to be the future MSAMUN leader. She
will also get to decide when the MUN will be held
and which schools are to be invited… just because
she’s qualified!
This is part of MSA’s new system for its
MUN members: those who win “Best Delegate”
are granted a membership to the university’s MUN
Club and earn the opportunity to join MSA later on
for their undergraduate studies.

Ali jams and we marmalade

Hark ye jazz lovers! Our very own
grade 11A student and Bulletin
reporter Ali Hosam Refai, guitar in
hand, participated in this year’s Cairo
Jazz Festival. Yes, he did!
The first annual Cairo Jazz
Festival was founded in 2009 by
pianist, composer and producer Amro
Salah who was driven by the passion to
celebrate this unique music form that
magically diffuses and overwhelms so
many listeners all over the planet.
Although only renowned artists
like Hamza Namira performed on the main stage, young talents had their own reserved spot where
they showed jazz-lovers what they are capable of. It was great to personally be there and witness
it all; truly amazing! Keep up the great work, Ali!

Cycling for awareness

Our grade 12 students Hanya Nosseir and Nour Malash took to the streets and joined
a bike ride held to raise awareness of the importance of saving the environment
and non-renewable natural resources. The message was loud and clear: more
people should start using bikes instead of cars, at least when riding to nearby
places. A famous TV host joined the ride donning an abaya (overdress gown) to
encourage veiled ladies – whether they wear this gown or not – to follow suit. TV
channel MBC MISR was there and had it all on tape. How cool is that?

Our Student Council touches hearts

57357 Children’s Cancer Hospital is one of the biggest of its kind in the world, and
it is leading the way in health care in Egypt. As MLS aims to lend a hand to the
community and promote the spirit of volunteering, we are proud to highlight the
wonderful gesture of our 2017 Student Council, whose members spent a day at the
57357 Hospital spreading smiles on the children’s faces.

MLS UNIVERSITY FAIR

Have you ever been all around confused about what you
want to study next or where you want to do it? We’ve all
been there – and some of us still are! Well, the purpose
behind the yearly MLS University Fair is to give students an
idea of the possibilities afforded them in the next step of
their educational future.

Representatives and admissions personnel of prominent
Egyptian universities, as well as agencies representing
prestigious universities in the UK, the USA, Canada, the Far
East and Europe converged on our MLS Campus to answer
questions from High School students and parents and
provide pertinent information allowing them to make up
their minds. One student said that “The MLS University Fair
gave me a chance to feel a bit more secure about the next
few years of my life.”

This year marked the fourth round of the MLSUF, which
has been growing in reputation and participation since
its inception. Although it is organized by our American
Division, it aims to serve all of MLS’s other sections too: the
National, the British and the French – hence, the diversity
of participants to cater for all needs.

MEANWHILE IN

Masters of the game

How do you make Maths more fun? Well, turn it into a board game, of
course! Divided into groups, Grade 10 creatively invented and executed
board games that recreate trigonometry (including the Pythagorean
Theorem and special right triangles). The project required them to
provide an answer key and explanations to the equations they’ve
added, so that anyone who plays their games can understand what
he/she did wrong and why. By breaking down mathematical equations
and their explanations into points
and steps, G10 managed to turn
even the Pythagorean theory into
fun. From Alice in Wonderland
to Friends, the themes they
chose were incredibly creative.
Ms Fatma Hassan, you rock!

Nowhere to go but up!

For the first semester’s big Maths
project, 11-A were instructed to build
a 3-D model of a roller coaster, along
with a video explaining the design.
Left to their own wild imaginations,
students made models with creative
themes such as: Space, Candy and
Lego, among many more. With the
entire teaching staff assessing the
students’ presentations of their
models and videos, the teachers were
shocked by the consistent quality of
their work, giving occasional standing
ovations and congratulating them on
their collective efforts. The Maths
Department invariably finds fascinating
ways to make the learning experience
more entertaining for students and for
teachers alike. Thank you Ms Fatma
Hassan!

Tickled pink by Algebra

School can be a real yawn –
what with not having access
to your computer games, text
messaging time and freedom to
roam the Internet – unless, of
course, you happen to be in Ms.
Nanice’s Grade 9 class.
Every week, her students
routinely look forward to an
entertaining, competitive day
of games that include trivia,
mental challenges and quizzes.
Students are sometimes
required to use the Internet
to look up games and compete
with other groups. “Maths can
be all fun and games!” asserts
our teacher.
Students of all ages
are so much more engaged
during interactive classes and
prefer activities that involve
collaboration with teachers
and peers. The large majority
of students rated classroom
discussions and debates as
“exciting and engaging” in
an informal poll, while group
competitions were rated even
higher.

The Scottsboro Boys strike again

To explore literature further and dig deeper into their text of study, Grade 9 students in Quarter Two recreated
the controversial trial of the Scottsboro Boys. Every student was assigned a role, including jury members, judges,
prosecution lawyers, defense lawyers and witnesses. The below text is the actual document presented by the
“rapporteur” to recap the verdict:
“Three black teens known as the Scottsboro boys were accused of rape. The trial started just 12 days
after their arrest. Multiple sources had already tried and convicted them, with numerous calls for the death
penalty.
The freight train left Chattanooga for Memphis at 10:20 a.m. Thirty minutes after it had pulled out of
Stevenson, Alabama, the stationmaster there saw a group of white hoboes walking along the train tracks back
toward the station. They told him that several black boys had thrown
them off the train after a fight. The stationmaster telephoned ahead
to the next stop, Scottsboro, but the train had already passed through.
It was finally stopped at Paint Rock, where a sheriff found three black
youngsters and, to everyone’s surprise, two young white women dressed
in men’s overalls.
Twenty minutes after the train had been stopped, one of the
women, Ruby Bates, called over the sheriff and told him that she and her
companion, Victoria Price, had been gang-raped by the blacks. The boys
were immediately arrested and taken to the Scottsboro jail. As the sheriff
sent the women to two local doctors for medical examinations, news of
the alleged attacks spread.
That night, a lynch mob of several hundred white men surrounded
the jail, but was kicked out by the National Guard. The teens became
known as “the Scottsboro Boys.”
Both Ruby Bates and Victoria Price’s stories were irrelevant and
contradictory, with no evidence supporting their accusations of being
“gang raped.” They lied because they feared being arrested under the
Mann Act, which is a federal law that bans prostitution.
Five heroic lawyers were assigned to represent the boys. The
prosecution questioned them one after the other. No closing arguments
were offered by these prosecution attorneys. The “Scottsboro Boys”
were found to be not guilty of rape and received no penalties whatsoever.
Racism is a volatile issue and remains so throughout the country.
The jury also quickly returned a Not Guilty verdict and the three
boys are, as of now, free men”. Thank you Ms. Doaa Naguib!

Hollywood, here we come!

Grade 11 students were assigned to write a screenplay for a five-episode mini-series, and then
proceed to film it. With each team creating their own unique world and stories that range from
crime and psychological thrillers to romantic dramas, the Grade 11 classes presented a diverse
range of shows that displayed some surprising performances from a few students – not to mention
really solid scripts – going as far as filming car chase scenes with actual policemen! According to
some, this project was able to bring out the talents that students already harbored, but just hadn’t
discovered yet. Thank you Mr. Ramy Maher and Ms. Heba Zeitoun!

24

Preparing for tomorrow

It is only a matter of months for Grade 12 to bid school adieu and join colleges. Quarter Two’s ELA
class saw MLS’s senior students imagining they are delivering a speech in front of their chosen college
committee to try and convince it to accept them. It was a challenge for most students but “some of
them did a really great job”, said Ms. Heba Zeitoun. Raween Osama was among those who truly shone;
the way she eloquently articulated her speech and her endeavor to convince the ‘committee’ were
extraordinary. Good luck in the real world, Grade 12 students -- the countdown has begun!

No tragic singing

Ever wanted to sing in class but the
teacher just wouldn’t let you? Well, with
full encouragement from their teacher,
tenth graders did just that in Quarter Two.
Their assignment was to write and perform
songs telling the story of Oedipus the King
which, in case you didn’t know, is a Greek
tragedy following the mysterious plague
that affected the citizens under Oedipus’
rule. With many twists and turns in the
plot, Grade 10 were able to
adapt the story into several
creative songs. We’re sure that
the performances managed to
cast a less depressing tone on
this classis tragedy from Ancient
Greece. Thank you Mr Ramy
Maher!

25

Bananas about Economics

Grade 12 students in Economics class had to “become” buyers and sellers in a banana market and
close as many deals as possible. As per the activity directions, a sale is made when one buyer and
one seller agree on a price with which they
are both satisfied -- imagine the spirited
negotiations! After a sale is made, they
record the price under “Actual Sale Price”
on their score sheet. They also had to report
the sale price to the Price Recorder and then
exchange their Buy or Sell Card for another
card of the same type. The dynamism in
that class is positively insane and Ms Shahira
Sadek’s passion absolutely contagious!

26

And where do you see yourself?

As part of Quarter Two’s Business curriculum, Grade 11 students were given the difficult task of
figuring out what they would wish their futures to look like someday – one of the hardest assignments
imaginable, at any age. They were instructed to investigate possible fields and career options, and
eventually simulate a job interview as part of their quarter assessment. Students took turns as both
the interviewers and the interviewees, dressed to impress in fully formal attire. This was a good
experience for students to practice the etiquette for interviews and to prepare for the pressure that
comes with the territory.

Layers under our social skin

In groups of five, Grade 12 Sociology students in Quarter Two had to present an overall analysis of
the roles played by five major social institutions. Each group member was tasked with preparing
logs for one of the six types of social institutions (Family, Education, Politics, Economics, Religion,
and Media) and study their functions. Then, the students were required to examine Egyptian society
to analyze the impact of each type of institution. Finally, they had to evaluate the most influential
type affecting the development of Egyptian society. Great work, Grade 12; we are impressed!
Thank you Ms Shereen Touni!

27

Build up your steam

When Grade 9 students were asked to review the Industrial Age, the task
was not centered on a tedious essay or a dull exam. Instead, they were
tasked with using the steam combustion engine to construct a vehicle!
In case you feel lost, the steam combustion engine is a heat
engine that performs mechanical work using steam as its working fluid.
Since the early 18th century, it has been applied to a variety of practical
uses. At the turn of the 19th century, steam-powered transport on both
sea and land began to make its appearance, becoming more dominant as
the century progressed.
Over six weeks of work, all three Grade 9 classes were assigned
the production of different steam engine related vehicles, such as the
train, boat, and car.
The various groups, each with its own leader, were responsible
for completing cumulative phases of this mega project. Responsibilities
included, but were not limited to, research, purchase of materials and
manufacture.
The students are yet to show their final products and it is rumored
that a competition will be held for the most accurate sample of a steam
engine. Thank you Mr. Ramzi Stino!

Walk like a Mayan

The Mayan civilization is noted for its art, architecture, mathematics,
and overall rich culture. Tenth graders in Quarter Two, under the proud
supervision of Ms Shahira Sadek and Mr Ramzi Stino, were asked to
physically portray this vibrant culture’s numerous aspects.
As each group was requested to present a different facet of
daily Mayan life -- ranging from housing to government and everything
in between -- they were able to bring this wonderful civilization to life
with their colorful costumes and informative presentations.

Waz abouz the

In 1927 during a dinner at his home, M-G-M studio chief Louis B. Mayer and his guests talked about creating an organized
group to benefit the film industry. A week later, 36 invitees from all the creative branches of the film industry dined at
Los Angeles’s Ambassador Hotel and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was born with Douglas Fairbanks
as president. Today the Academy has 6000 members and oversees the nomination, voting and the ceremony itself of
one of the most famous events that honor filmmaking: the Academy Awards, casually called the Oscars.
The first Academy Awards ceremony was a banquet at the Roosevelt Hotel with 270 attendees on May 16th
1929. Recipients were announced three months earlier; the next year the Academy kept the results secret but gave an
advance list to newspapers for publication at 11 p.m. This continued until 1940 when they started the sealed-envelope
system still in use today.
To qualify for nomination a film must open in the previous calendar year, from midnight at the start of January
1 to midnight at the end of December 31, in Los Angeles County, California and play for at least seven consecutive days.
It must be feature-length, defined as a minimum of 40 minutes, and it must exist either on a 35 mm or 70 mm film print
or in 24 frame/s or 48 frame/s progressive scan digital cinema format with a minimum projector resolution of 2048 by

In late December each year ballots and the List of Eligible Releases are mailed to the 6,000 active members. For
most categories, members from each of the branches vote to determine the nominees only in their respective categories
(i.e. only directors vote for directors, writers for writers, actors for actors, etc.). In the special case of Best Picture, all
voting members are eligible to select the nominees.
The ceremony is held most commonly in late February or early March, depending on the dates of such events
as the Winter Olympics, NCAA Basketball Championships as well as Easter holidays to ensure maximum viewership. The
awards were first televised in 1953 and have reached a viewership of 58 million people. The first ceremony was the
shortest lasting only 15 minutes, while the longest was in 2000 and lasted 4 hours. In 2004 the academy decided to limit
the acceptance speeches of winners to 45 seconds each in an attempt to keep the ceremony as short as possible.
Since 1950, Oscar winners cannot officially sell their statuette without first offering it back to the Academy for
a dollar. The statuettes are solid bronze and plated in 24-karat gold, and are styled as a figure of a knight holding a
crusader’s sword. They are 13½ inches tall and weighs 8½ pounds; it takes almost three months to make the 50 statuettes.

RECIPE CORNER by Mariam Magdy

The Best Chocolate Cake Ever

Ingredients: 1 teaspoon espresso powder
2 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup milk
2 cups sugar ½ cup vegetable or canola oil
¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder 2 eggs
2 teaspoons baking powder 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1½ teaspoons baking soda 1 cup boiling water
1 teaspoon salt

Preheat oven to 175º C. Prepare two 9-inch cake pans by greasing

with baking spray or buttering and lightly flouring.

Now onto the actual process:

1.Add flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and espresso

powder to a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer. Whisk through to combine or, using your paddle

attachment, stir through flour mixture until combined well.

2.Add milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla to flour mixture and mix together on medium speed until well

combined. Reduce speed and carefully add boiling water to the cake batter. Beat on high speed for about 1

minute to add air to the batter.

3.Distribute cake batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, until a

toothpick or cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean.

4.Remove from the oven and allow to cool for about 10 minutes, remove from the pan and cool completely.

Do not start frosting until the cake is completely cooled, or else the frosting will melt.

For the frosting:

Ingredients:

• 1½ cups butter (3 sticks), softened (meaning room temperature, or soft enough for you to run

a spoon to cut it instead of a knife)

• 1 cup unsweetened cocoa • 5 cups powdered sugar

• ½ cup milk • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

• ½ teaspoon espresso powder

1.Cream together butter and cocoa powder until well-combined, there should be no lumps.

2.Add sugar and milk to cocoa mixture by adding 1 cup of sugar followed by about a tablespoon of milk.

After each addition has been combined, turn mixer onto a high speed for about a minute. Repeat until all

sugar and milk have been added.

3.Add vanilla extract and espresso powder and combine well.

Notes:

•If frosting appears too dry, add more milk, a tablespoon at a time until it reaches the right consistency. If

it appears too wet and does not hold its form, add more confectioner’s sugar, a tablespoon at a time until it

reaches the right consistency.

•The cake is supposed to seem very thin after adding the boiling water – but that’s not how most cake

batters look, and that’s okay.
