THE GRAND

This year MLS High School students of the American Division really outdid themselves when they took up a
very positive, very emotionally rewarding initiative to bring Ramadan bags to all workers, nannies, janitors
and bus drivers to the entire school! A few weeks before the holy month started, students were already
working like busy bees, purchasing cans of beans, bags of sugar, rice and other Ramadan grocery staples for
their school’s support staff.
With the MLS Cares club taking the forefront of this mission, they were able to pack Ramadan grocery bags
for all 400 workers in the four divisions of the school! The 20+ students from the MLS Cares activities group
recruited plenty more seniors and sophomores to come join them in the packing and sorting process that
took several days before the start of the holy month. Way to go MLS for always spreading vibes of giving and
sharing in these special times, and also a big thank you to Ms. Alaa Assem and Ms. Deena Seleem for their
continuous support and supervision on this emotionally and spiritually fulfilling initiative!

“MLS CARES” FOR ALL

Student members of our very dynamic MLS Cares club have been working like busy bees all year
to provide valuable assistance to those in need. It is hard to miss the club’s various fund-raising
activities, such as selling koshary during break to donate the profits for a great cause, or even
seeing the members buy goods out of their own allowances to allocate them to places in need.
There is no doubt that this club spreads positivity, cooperation and kindness for its members and
the whole student body. Youssef Tomoum, a sophomore who is an active member of the club,
asserts that working to help those in need was “a positive and exciting experience.”

This semester, the club collected money for these following purposes: providing medicines
for an orphanage; for an animal shelter (seen in the photos); purchasing and packaging Ramadan
grocery bags for MLS workers (previous pages); and for gharemat (debtors who are jailed for small
amounts of money they are unable to return). Thank you Ms. Alaa Assem for inspiring the students
to spread kindness and generosity!

OF DATA

MLS High has been administering the Preliminary SAT (PSAT) exam for students of grades 9 to 11 for
a number of years. This academic year, however, an additional exercize was performed to guage
Grade 10 students’ readiness for the SAT which they begin sitting for in Grade 11. The exercize
consisted in readministering the PSAT exam conducted in October 2017 once again in May 2018 and
comparing the results. Below are our the findings of the High School Data Team.

OUR ATHLETES

A girl for all seasons

Jayda, I must start by congratulating you on your excellent accomplishment
this season in synchronized swimming. This year, you received the Gold
Medal for duet, Silver for the combo routine, and Bronze for the team in the
National Championships.
Tell us how you started synchronized swimming. Was it by choice or did you
stumble on the sport by chance?
Definitely by chance! I initially chose diving when I moved back to Cairo,
but while with my mom on my first diving practice I saw the synchronized
swimmers in the water and was completely mesmerized by their beauty and
grace.
How many hours a day do you practice?
On weekends I practice from 8am until 2pm, while on school days from 5:30
to 8 in the morning, and again from 2-6 in the afternoon, and then again from
8-12 at night.
Tell us about your daily routine
It’s very hard to keep up with school. I am managing somehow, but I’m not achieving what I want
academically because it is just too demanding. I often don’t get enough sleep through the night and I
find myself falling asleep in some of my classes!
How do you make sure you to eat healthy and to take in the nutrients you need on a daily basis?
I follow a strict diet, minimizing sugar and carb intake. I eat lots of protein, fruits and vegetables. So I
basically take my carbohydrates ration from fruits and vegetables. You have to maintain an ideal, exact
weight in synchro; you can’t go above your competitive weight or you lose points. It’s very tough.
What motivates you to keep going on difficult days?
I tell myself that soon I won’t be doing this for the rest of my life, and I always keep my eyes on the
prize: the Olympics in Tokyo -- my greatest motivator and driving force.
How has your family supported you?
My parents are most supportive, making sure I’m going to all my practices, eating right and always
keeping me on the right track when I deviate or lose interest.
Who is your inspiration?
I guess my mom and my dad; they are always by my side and they are definitely my inspiration.
What about your role model?
I don’t have a role model.
What do you think Egypt needs to excel in synchronized swimming?
Swimmers abroad take the sport more seriously than here; their
practices are longer and harder. Also, the girls’ biggest struggle
here is with their weight, always fluctuating. In other countries,
they live, eat and dream “synchro”. Egyptian swimmers could be
phenomenal at this sport, if it weren’t for physical appearance
and fitness. We don’t train enough, and the trainings are not hard
enough.

ON THE FIELD

What do you need to accomplish to be a better swimmer next year?
I have to work on my level of endurance and I have injured my shoulder so I have to strengthen that
too.
The picture showing you and your partner as the results were being called out is very expressive. Tell
us the story behind it.
My partner and I were training much more than our team, maybe 6 hours more everyday! We were
determined to win this and it came to the point where I was sick with high fever for at least 4-5 hours
but still in the water! This picture reflects our hard work and perseverance. We were the last routine
of the day and my partner kept telling me that they are saving the best for last. And she was right!
The picture was snapped as we were just out of the water and the scores being called out. I got so
emotional from hearing the numbers I exactly wished, dreamed and envisioned would be called out!
My partner was holding me in support and was reassuring me all the way. It was an indescribable
moment!
Do you have any idea what you want to study in college?
It is still undecided. I think I would like a career in media, or maybe acting.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
The 2020 Olympics will be over in five years, so I either see myself as a coach for the sport, or continue
to be a swimmer and work to be a part ofthe next Olympics.

The MLS community wishes you all the best in your future endeavors and continued success, Jayda.

You make us proud! Interview by Ms. Nabila Fattouh
