Diocese of Udon Thani
In 1948, the Redemptorist Missionaries (from Congregatio Sanctissimi Redemptoris;
C.Ss.R.) came to work in Thailand for the first time. They were assigned to work in the
Archdiocese of Tha Rae-Nong Saeng by taking care of Ban Chang Ming and nearby Churches,
with the first four members: Father Clarence J. Duhart, Father Edward Kane, Father Roger
Gotbaut, and Father Robert Lariviere. Later, they were assigned to take care of the church
in Phon Sung and various churches in Udon Thani. When the number of Catholic Christians
increased, more priests and brothers, from the Redemptorist Missionaries arrived to help with
the preaching.
On May 7, 1953, the Archdiocese of Tha Rae-Nong Saeng was divided, and the
Diocese of Udon Thani was established. Father Clarence J. Duhart was appointed to be the
Apostolic Prefect. He ruled over the Diocese of Udon Thani and year 1954, purchased the
land around Udon Thani to create the center of the diocese. On December 18, 1965, Pope Paul
VI officially announced his appointment as the Bishop of Udon Thani. On April 21, 1966, he
was ordained and named to be the first bishop of the diocese. (The diocese altered to Udon
Thani in 1969).

Later, the cathedral was built
in Udon Thani province. It was named
Our Mother of Perpetual Help. In 1968,
Bishop Duhart founded schools and
firmly established the foundation of
faith in the villages with the early
Missionaries.

Upon his resignation from the
position of a bishop, Pope Paul VI
announced the appointment of Bishop
George Yod Phimphisan of the Redemptorist Missionaries to take office as the Second Bishop
on October 18, 1975, and he was officially ordained as bishop. On December 12, 1975, he
built the seminary because he saw the importance of having successors to serve the local
Church. The importance of education has led to the opening of more schools along with the
construction of various Churches.

On November 14, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI announced the appointment of Bishop
Joseph Luechai Thatwisai, a Thai priest from the Udon Thani Diocese, to hold the position
of the Third Bishop, having been ordained as a Bishop on February 6, 2010, at the Cathedral
of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, Udon Thani, continuing to rule until the present. He makes
pastoral visits to every parish, performing his ministerial duties and attending to the needs
and concerns of the members of his diocese. He continues to promote the ideal school
environment through the priests he has authorized to manage their educational apostolates.

There are 18,111 Catholic Christians
in the Diocese of Udon Thani. It covers an
area of 6 provinces in the Northeast,
including Udon Thani Province, Khon Kaen
Province, Loei Province, Nong Khai
Province, Nong Bua Lamphu Province, and
Bueng Kan Province, with 32 Diocesan
Priests and 6 Congregations of Religious men
with 30 Priests and Brothers. There are 14 Religious women Congregations with 90 Sisters.

The Diocese of Udon Thani established many Catholic schools. The first schools
were founded during the leadership of Bishop Clarence James Duhart, C.Ss.R., with his
brother Redemptorist Missionaries. His successor, Bishop George Yod Phimphisan, C.Ss.R.,
carried on this legacy and built more schools to cater to the needs of the communities.
Currently, Bishop Joseph Luechai Thatwisai is continuing what has already been established.
These keep growing as they advance, foster faith in, and spread the news of the Lord.
