OFFICIATING SPEECH

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious and Most Merciful,
Assalamu'alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.
I am delighted and honoured to have this opportunity to welcome all participants to the 11th
Postgraduate Colloquium 2021 organized by the Faculty of Business, Economics and
Accountancy. The theme of the colloquium is “Cultivating Research Culture” and it corresponds
with the current situation as we are in the process of recovering due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
To many of us, pursuing postgraduate research in these situations can be challenging
financially, physically, and mentally. This event therefore aims to bring our postgraduates back
together in communicating their research experience and work to colleagues and lecturers in
the faculty.
I hope that this will provide a supportive environment for all to stay motivated during
candidature and in ensuring that the research culture always flourishes in FBEA. I encourage
all of you to make the most of this two-day colloquium by getting involved in as many panel
discussions as possible, both as presenters and as audience.
To conclude, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the organizing committee for their
commitment to organizing this colloquium. Congratulations to all postgraduate students for
your participation in this colloquium, and for dedicating your time on your research that I
believe will bring positive long-term impact to the faculty and society. I wish you all a
productive and enjoyable colloquium!
Thank you.

awareness of the importance of postgraduate research activities as the key to knowledge

of global standing and this postgraduate colloquium helps us to move toward that vision as it

CHAIRPERSON’S
MESSAGE

Assalamu’alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh,

I am pleased to welcome you to the 11th Postgraduate Colloquium 2021 with the theme
“Cultivating Research Culture” and congratulations to our participants who will be presenting
their research progress.

The high quality of the researchers' abstracts herein reflects the thinking and focus of men and
women on a journey to become experts in their particular fields. Their contributions make this
colloquium an outstanding event and a showcase of the strength and focus of researches
carried out by postgraduate students at FBEA. This academic activity has continually improved
since its inception in 2009. The current colloquium took a step further by applying the 3MT
style of presentation where presenters are given three minutes to present their research. It is
hoped that this approach can polish the presentation skills of our postgraduates and to
prepare them for their thesis examination presentations.

The current colloquium also serves as an intersection of knowledge, for postgraduate students
at the faculty, to get a fresh idea and gain new information in the relevant field. Feedbacks
received from the audience and reviewers are the means that are essential to developing good
academic research.

I wish to express my sincere gratitude to our distinguished speakers and colleagues who have
agreed to chair the panel sessions as well as supervisors for their time to attend this colloquium.
I would also like to acknowledge the contribution and effort of the organizing committee. This
colloquium would not have been possible without the combined collaborative efforts and
enthusiasm of individuals from FBEA. I hope that this kind of academic activity will continue to
flourish in the future, widen our relationship, academic networks, and develop individuals, the
faculty as well as society in general.

Thank You.

DR. ARIF @ KAMISAN PUSIRAN

Deputy Dean (Student Affairs and Postgraduate)

ABOUT PGC The 11th FBEA Postgraduate Colloquium
18-19 November 2021 | Cisco Webex

The Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancy (FBEA)
took the initiative to improve the smooth running of its doctoral
and master's studies by organizing the FBEA Postgraduate
Colloquium (PGC) since 2009. This annual event is in
collaboration with Centre of Postgraduate Studies UMS (CPS).

The aim of the PGC is to monitor the students’ progress as well
as to eliminate any administrative obstacles face by the students
during their tenure of studies. Therefore, the faculty provide an
avenue for research students to present their research ideas,
progress, findings in academic discourse and to receive
feedback and guidance from senior scholars. This is important
to maintain a positive learning momentum, and injecting
students’ confidence to remain consistent in their research
adventures.

In addition, it will be the best academic discussion for all the
participants to share knowledge, debate and gain input from all
the participants and panel of reviewers. Indirectly, students will
be able to ensure that their study process runs smoothly and
various new inputs are obtained to further refine their thesis. The
readiness of the students to present in the approval phase of the
Research Proposal and Viva-voce can also be determined and
improved through the performance in this colloquium.

Starting 2018, the faculty has made the attendance compulsory
whereby the postgraduate students need to make a three-
minute presentation to show their work progress.

For the 11th edition of PGC, the event goes online for the first
time. A total of 180 postgraduate students participated in the
Colloquium which is a pilot program introduced by FBEA to
continue the faculty's efforts to produce quality Doctor of
Philosophy and Master's graduates from UMS.

The Determinants of Women Labour Force Participation in Sabah

Margret Yap
Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancy, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Malaysia

Abstract
This study about the determinants of women labour force participation by examining the education level,
family consideration, work-life balance and flexible working arrangements in Sabah. Specifically, this
study is to examine the moderating effect of marital status and qualification level to four specific factors
and women labour force participation in Sabah. Quantitative approach will be carried out for this study
and the sample size consists of 68 women labour force participation. The data are analysed through the
Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) and SmartPLS 3.0. The study was based on PLS-
SEM to test the hypothesized relationship, which focuses on the measurement model and the structural
model. The results of this study suggested women labour force participation could increase through
education, family, work-life balance and flexible working arrangement. Besides that, the results also
suggested that women labour force participation can increase through marital status and qualification

Towards Organizational Citizenship Behavior

Chang Gait Heng
Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancy, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Malaysia

Abstract
This study is the exploration of the Big Five, the PE Fit dimensions, the moderating effect of intention
to stay towards organisational citizenship behaviour (OCB) among employees working in the finance
and insurance industry, Sabah. According to the Person environment (PE) fit theory, the two
perspectives in explaining individual behaviours can be through their personality characteristics and the
situation responsible for the individual’s behaviour. With both Big 5 Personality and dimensions PE Fit,
it is important to address the importance of OCB with the application of the PE Fit theory. Thus, this
study attempts to test the positive effect of Big Five on OCB, the positive effect of the dimensions of
PE Fit on OCB, the moderating effect of intention to stay towards Big Five and OCB, and the
moderating effect of intention to stay towards the dimensions of PE Fit and OCB. Although much
research has been done on OCB, none have combined OCB with the Big Five personality and the
dimensions of PE Fit and to include intention to stay as the moderator. Convenience sampling technique
was applied to conveniently collect data from a total of 185 samples in the finance and insurance sector
in Sabah, Malaysia. Hence, the study was conducted quantitatively through google questionnaire forms.
The result of this study demonstrates five supported hypotheses out of 11 hypotheses. This study is
being formulated at a theoretical level and tested at an empirical level with SPSS 27 and SmartPLS 3.0.
Theoretical and practical implications are discussed with future research suggested in this study.

identification and the agent’s performance. In Sabah, there is an inconsistency of the MLM agent’s
performance, other than facing a lack of upline support and identification; generally, there are
problematic behavior and low agents engagement. Instead of the agent’s sales performance-focused
previously by many scholars, the researcher focusing on the agent’s performance were impacting the
service quality based on contextual performance. Previous studies and literature have analyzed sales
agents’ performance has remained uninvestigated in the MLM context, organizational identification
neglects interpersonal identification, and social influence is believed to moderate performance but is
rarely included in such a study. The quantitative method was applied, 200 questionnaires were
distributed. However, only 179 were used as the final sample. The analysis results found emotional
stability in positive relationships with the agent’s performance and extraversion, conscientiousness, and
emotional stability in positive relationships with interpersonal identification. Overall, interpersonal
identification significantly affects the agent’s performance. Indirectly, interpersonal identification
significantly affects the relationship between emotional stability and the agent’s performance and
significantly affects conscientiousness and the agent’s performance. Future research should extend to
other direct selling companies’ agents, widen the scope, and consider other essential variables with
longitudinal survey design. The significance of this study is that it contributes to theoretical and
practical implications, application to all MLM agent's practices, enhancement of the agent’s social
change, and advantages to researchers or academics.

facilitators if compared to the push factors. Lack of study have been conducted to study the perception
of rural entrepreneurs in adopting e-commerce especially nowadays in globalization era whereby e-
commerce is one of the significant platforms that should be utilized by almost all of the entrepreneurs.
Besides, study to understand how the entrepreneurial motives influence their facilitators remains
understudied. Some of the limitations of this study is this study only interview rural entrepreneurs under
the program organized by Ministry of Rural Development. Therefore, the perception of other rural
entrepreneurs might not be explored. Secondly, this study is only cross-sectional in nature, therefore,
there is a tendency for their perception to change over the time. The findings of this study might be
fruitful to the relevant stakeholder such as Ministry of Rural Development, Malaysia Digital Economy
Corporation, NGOs, the business owners themselves in ensuring the proper strategies can be executed
to enhance the digital economy in rural area.

Factors Influencing the Strategic Planning Success in The Malaysian
Public Sector

Humfrey J Suimin
Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancy, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Malaysia

Abstract

Strategic planning (SP) was introduced in the public sector more than three decades ago. This research
studies the strategic planning practices in the federal government departments, and what the actors
perceive to be the factors that influence the successful implementation of strategic planning in the public
sector. SP is part of a wave of new public management related reforms taking place throughout the
European public sector. These waves have significantly impacted SP globally, including Malaysia.
There have been some studies conducted to investigate the factors influencing strategic planning
implementation success in the Malaysian public sector. However, a study on the merits of SP and the
factors influencing its success in the context of the Malaysian public sector are still lacking since it is
still at an initial stage. The central research questions of the study are: (i) What are the factors
influencing the successful implementation of strategic planning in the public sector and (ii) How does
political influence moderate these factors. The study intends to examine the factors related to strategic
planning such as: (i) Leadership, (ii) Organisational Culture and environment, (iii) Organisation Size,
(iv) Management Participation, and (v) Employee Participation. The study hopes to propose a
comprehensive framework of SP to the Malaysian public sector. This research will take a qualitative
and interpretive approach. An interpretive approach is used in a effort to uncover the dynamics of
strategy processes in government departments by engaging with the discourses of senior managers to
capture the intuitions, preferences, beliefs and assumptions which shape their approaches to strategic
planning in their organisations and their wider context. Part of this study originality stems from the
effort to gauge the perception of senior managers in the federal government on what influences the
success of strategic planning in the public sector. This is conducted by analysing and reflecting various
complex and diverse actor narratives that gives insight into how people understand their organisations,
based on their web of beliefs, shown through their expressions and discourses. This research examines
the factors influencing the success of strategic planning in the public sector through the lenses of senior
managers grasped through their intuitions, preferences, beliefs, and assumptions. This study does not
cover the aspect of measuring strategic planning effectiveness per se, nor evaluation of strategy
implementation. Those areas are very important aspects of the strategic planning process which can be
studied separately within their own right.

Determinants of Social Media Use Success Among Government Agencies

Zainatun Naaemah Hussin
Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancy, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Malaysia

Abstract
Over the years, social media has become a must-have technology in our daily lives, which causes the
private and public sector to be present on social media just to be where the people at. The dearth of
government social media use success has drawn the researcher’s attention. More evidence is needed to
understand how social media can be leveraged into a better communication platform. It has been
reported that the government in developing countries are still at an early stage in social media use where
it is only used for news update with low interaction with the citizens. Also, it has been observed that
there is a low interest from the citizen to engage with the government. These issues have sparked interest
on how the government agencies can use social media to achieve communication success with citizens.
Thus, this paper seeks to bridge the gap by proposing a model built upon the Stimulus-Organism-
Response (S-O-R) model. We attempt to explore the determinants of citizen engagement on government
social media. A mixed method of content analysis and online survey will be employed on the Malaysian
government Facebook page and the citizen that uses the social media. This study will contribute to the
body of knowledge, and to the practitioner from government agencies.

The Relationship Between Stressors Toward Emotional Exhaustion and Its
Effects Towards Productivity in Services Industry: Considering

Generation Gap, Emotional Dissonance, Turnover Intention, and Perceived
Health

Kathleen Elanie bt James Bagah
Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancy, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Malaysia

Abstract
Service sector is by far the most important sector in industrialized economies. Its essentiality in global
economy is understood yet the services may be homogenous or extremely heterogeneous; in which are
difficult to define, differentiate, and categorize. Simply put, service is an interaction made between the
recipient and the producer. Additionally, work conditions can cause emotional disruption such as
emotional dissonance due to the conceptual overlap between task-related and client-related job
characteristics and this dissonance has the strongest and most consistent relationship with work
exhaustion. Similarly, the association of age with emotional competence and the motivation to avoid or
limit negative or high arousal situations is attributed to a shift in priorities as time is perceived to be
more limited as people age, and to possible declines in physiological flexibility and cognition. As such,
poor work conditions can lead to emotional dissonance which can affect one’s physical and mental state
along with the intention to stay in the company. Meanwhile, individual’s age can be among of the
moderating factor between such relationship. This study will be utilizing questionnaire to gather data
from respondents, and these data will proceed to analyze by using quantitative approach i.e., Partial
Least Square (PLS) for its reliability and validity.

tested in relationship to tourist guides (TGs) intention to stay and career satisfaction. An exploratory
sequential mixed method approach was adopted by conducting an exploratory qualitative research
design followed by a quantitative study. Both focused on senior TGs in Sabah. Qualitative findings
enrich the current understanding of mow: positive working environment, self-fulfillment, and work-
life balance contribute to the MoW of senior TGs in Sabah. A pilot study is being designed for Phase
two presently. Findings contribute to an in-depth understanding of MoW for tourism employees (TGs)
and will enrich the current MoW instrument. Qualitative findings provide deep insight into the
mechanism of MoW for TGs. Findings extend the use of Attribution Theory to explain MoW.
Practitioners benefit from a thorough understanding of the MoW among TGs for implementing
resilience strategies to remain stay, engaged and motivated is useful for training courses.

The interactive effects of External Corporate Social Responsibility and
Perceived Organizational support on Organizational Identification;

mediating mechanism of Perceived External Prestige and Emotional Labor
in banking sector of Pakistan.

Arqam Javed Kayani
Faculty of Business, Economics, and Accountancy, Universiti Malaysia Sabah

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between perceived external corporate social
responsibility (i.e. CSR to community, environment, and consumer) and organizational identification
of employees using perceived external prestige and emotional labor as mediators and perceived
organizational support as moderator. The study is based on social identity and social exchange theory
to provide an alternate explanation to the above relationships. The survey design following
questionnaire in English language was physically administered among employees working in banking
sector of Pakistan. The study found that external corporate social responsibility is positively related
with organizational identification. The study found that perceived external prestige and emotional labor
sequentially mediates among the variables and POS significantly moderates the relationship between
emotional labor and organizational identification. The sequential mediation of perceived external
prestige and emotional and moderation of Perceived organizational support in a composite model is the
value and originality of the research. The study relies on a cross sectional design to collect the data from
employees banking sector. With the emergence of service economy in Pakistan, the relevance of service
staff has been developed enormously. The increased emphasis on employees’ psychology has
enlightened the prominence on factors that have the potential to affect it (i.e. present study variables).
The present study provides organizations a mechanism to manage employees’ psychological states by
managing and engineering their perceptions at work. Furthermore, the finding suggests a roadmap to
motivate employees for the performance of expected emotional labor. Keeping in view the
consequences of CSR perception, the government can pass a bill to constitutionalize corporate social
responsibility as a mandatory business activity, specifying the minimum share of profit to be spent on
CSR activities. This can help both; the organizations and government in the post COVID resettling
stage.

Commitment and Career Plateau

Jiang Mengmeng
Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancy, Universiti Malaysia Sabah

Abstract
As the biggest occupational hazard in the 21st century, job burnout is like COVID-19, which damages
the physical and mental health of financial staff in industry-based Corporation. Although there are a lot
of studies on Job Burnout of financial staff in industry-based Corporation, it is a pity that there are few
studies on Job Burnout of financial staff in industry-based Corporation in China, and there is a lack of
theories and achievements that can be used for reference, which is an important content that needs to
be supplemented and improved. On the basis of literature research and theory, this paper constructs the
model of "measures → mediator variables (modulator variables) → job burnout" and puts forward the
research hypothesis; Combined with semi-structured interviews and financial staff samples, the research
hypotheses are verified by using structural equation and multiple regression analysis; Finally, from the
perspective of organizational commitment and career plateau, this paper puts forward the method of
improving the performance of financial staff in industry based Corporation.

What Makes Family Firms More Competitive?
The Role Of Social Capital Resources, Organizational Capital Resources,

And Process Capital Resources In Non-Listed Family Businesses

Syed Amjad Hussain
Faculty of Business, Economics, and Accountancy, Universiti Malaysia Sabah

Abstract

This paper offers a few focus points by sighting the resources reserves exclusively available for family
businesses (FBs); namely, social capital resources, organizational capital resources and process capital
resources using the lens of resource-based view theory (RBV). The aim is to look into the impact of
these resources on business performance, which is exclusively available to family firms considering the
role of innovativeness as mediator. It is observed that most of the family businesses are failing during
the transitional phase from one generation to the next. Only 12% make it to that distance, and the
numbers get past four generations before dropping to as short as 3%. The literature review focused on
the exclusive resources held by the family businesses. Some of these become the compulsory part of
business resource reserves and therefore firms need to learn to live with them considering their
economic and non-economic benefits. The literature gap in FBs and RBV pointed that not all the firm’s
resources provide economic contribution even if they are part of business resource reserves. Family
firms’ decision-makers must consider the economic contribution of a particular resource when acquiring
or developing its resource reserves to survive and grow. Purpose of this paper to look into the role of
social capital resources, organizational capital resources and process capital resources of non-listed
family business in their growth. Quantitative Method (Questionnaire). Family Businesses (FBs) should
have only those resources, which contribute to value creation for the customers and the organization.
The presence of any other resource, which cannot create value, is a waste of value. There are certain
resources exclusively available to FBs, which may or may not create value for the business. It is the
family members' responsibility to decide that what kind of resources they should acquire or develop
which have some economic contribution to the business. This decision should be taken considering the
economic value of each of the targeted resources either acquired from the factor market or developed
internally. It is also observed that there are some certain resources, which become the compulsory part
of the family organizations with no economic contribution and in some cases negatively affect the
business but organizations cannot set them aside. They must learn to live with them to minimize their
negative economic contribution towards businesses. To understand the potential economic value of
some resources, which are exclusively available for FBs while some of which are the compulsory part
of family businesses. This may help decision-makers to provide some guidelines for the development
of a firm’s resource reserves, which eventually will lead towards better performance. If the
economically potential resources are acquired and developed, which are exclusively available for FBs
while considering their economic contribution, they may improve the business growth and performance.
This paper will offer some insights about the resource reserves that FBs must understand and realize
their economic contribution to the business at the time of their acquisition or development. Additionally,
FBs need to learn to live with some essential resources, which are the compulsory part of the business.

Determinants of Usage Among E-Hailing Drivers in Malaysia: The Impact
of Perceived Technology, Perceived Risk, Governmental Regulations and

Trust

Maryum Zaigham
Faculty of Business, Economics, and Accountancy, Universiti Malaysia Sabah

Abstract
Reports have emerged that suggest the GDP earnings from e-hailing in Malaysia have been plummeting
and this could be due to the falling numbers of e-hailing drivers on the Malaysian roads. This research
examines the factors impeding actual usage of e-hailing drivers in Malaysia. Technology Acceptance
Model (TAM) is adapted in addition to three new factors including perceived risk, governmental
regulations and trust. A total of 495 e-hailing drivers across Malaysia were chosen though purposive
sampling and snowballing technique to take part in this research through the distribution of
questionnaires via manual and online means. The results suggest that a driver’s intention to use e-hailing
is determined by perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness and the existence of governmental
regulations. Ultimately, the intention to use led to the actual usage of e-hailing among drivers. However,
unexpectedly enough, the results signify that perceived risk does not have any role to play in the
determination of intention to use e-hailing unless there is an existence of trust among the drivers. Overall,
this research draws attention to the substantial contrast in its results from the majority of prior literature
of TAM as well as has thoroughly improves the exploratory power of TAM by introducing new
variables into the model particularly from the perspective of Malaysian e-hailing drivers. Results of this
research are expected to bring forth fresh theoretical and practical contributions that can be utilized to
further improve the country’s e-hailing industry.
