SDB - Unit 2 Texture

Texture - Scott Dobinson-Bell (1)

Texture GCSE Photography Unit 2 Scott Dobinson-Bell

Texture

I MUST: Look for places to take photos of various textures. I SHOULD: Experiment with colour and black and white images. I COULD: Try to link my investigations to the work of artists.

Photoshoot 1 Textures in the Art Room

The Plan • Look for a range of textures in the art room – these can be natural or man made. • Take close up images of them using my camera – try to find interesting compositions. • Experiment with the final images and see what I can create – I'd like my work to be quite abstract.

I MUST: Think of other places to find textures. I SHOULD: Try to create textures in my work in other ways – maybe altering the surface of a phot once printed? I COULD: Find relevant artist who explore texture and mark-making.

Photoshoot 2 Tree Bark

The Plan • Most of the textures I found in the art room were man made so I want to find more natural texture for my work. • To look at the trees on the school site and take close up images of the textured bark • Experiment with the final images and see what I can create – I'd like my work to be quite abstract.

I MUST: Be careful not to get too close to the object – this makes the image blurry. I SHOULD: Experiment with layering images to create new textures. I COULD: Combine natural and man-made textures in my experiments.

The Boyle Family Artist Research

I MUST: Use these images as a starting point and look in new places for textures. I SHOULD: Look at how to use leading lines and frame my compositions better. I COULD: Explopre the contrast between straight and curved lines in my images.

Photoshoot 3 Floors

I was inspired by The Boyle Family to look at surfaces aroudn the school site. I tried to take similar images to the ones in my research

Agne Gintalaite

I MUST: Look at a series of similar objects – creating a typology. I SHOULD: Think of something to look at instead of doors. I COULD: Use the surfaces of furnitire in the art department?

Photoshoot 4 Under The Desks

I wanted to create a series of images based on similar objects. I turned the desks over in the art room and took photos of their undersides.

I liked the text and marks I found and decided to overlap them using photoshop to create new compositions.

Cy Twombly Artist Research

I MUST: Think about how texture can be implied through marks made on a surface. I SHOULD: Try to find a way to create simple marks like this but using some sort of light based media – how can I do this? I COULD: Print my images onto acetate and then scratch into them before scanning the results.

Developing Ideas Chemigrams

• A chemigram (from "chemistry" and gramma, Greek for "things written")[1] is an experimental piece of art where an image is made by painting with chemicals on light-sensitive paper (such as photographic paper). • The term Chemigram was coined in the 1950s by Belgian artist Pierre Cordier. [2]

Photoshoot 5 Marbles & Developer

I used marbles coated in developer to create abstract mark-making compositions influenced by Cy Twombly's work and my photos of the underneath of desks

I wanted to experiment more with my chemigrams so I used Photoshop and the Risoprint template that we have to see what would happen if I overlayed my images in different colours.
