VERTEBRATES & INVERTEBRATES VERTEBRATES & INVERTEBRATES

Veterbrates are animals with a spinal column and an elaborate skeletal structure. Vertebrates are further classified into five classes which are Pisces, Amphibia, Reptilia, Aves and Mammals. What are Vertebrates?

Characteristic traits of vertebrates animals Characteristic traits of vertebrates animals All vertebrates have muscles and skeletons that help them to move around easily and perform complex moves. All vertebrates have some or all of these systems : muscular system, skeletal system, excretory system, immune system and nervous system, and skin covered with scales, fur, hair, or feathers. All vertebrates also have an endoskeleton, which consists of the bones that are inside a body which gives them their shape and allows them to stand erect.

CLASSIFICATION OF VERTEBRATES CLASSIFICATION OF VERTEBRATES They are cold-blooded animals. They have streamlined body. They have gills to breathe and fins for movement. In most of the cases, the body is covered with scales which provide protection to the body Pisces (Fishes) 1. 2. 3. 4. 1 2 They are cold-blooded animals. They can live both on land and in water. They breathe through both lungs and moist skin. They reproduce only in water. Amphibia (Frog & Salamander) 1. 2. 3. 4.

CLASSIFICATION OF VERTEBRATES CLASSIFICATION OF VERTEBRATES They are cold-blooded animals. They live on land. They breathe with the help of lungs. They have dry and scaly skin. They lay eggs. Reptilia (Lizard & Snake) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 3 4 They are warm blooded animals. Their body is covered with feathers. Their forelimbs are modified into wings. They breathe through lungs. Their bones are hollow. They lay eggs. Aves (Birds) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

CLASSIFICATION OF VERTEBRATES CLASSIFICATION OF VERTEBRATES They are warm blooded animals. They breathe through lungs. They give birth to babies. They have mammary glands to produce milk. Mammals (Animals with mammary glands) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5

Invertebrates are animals without a spine. They have no vertebrae. Vertebrates are further classified into eight classes. What are Invertebrates?

Characteristic traits of invertebrates animals Characteristic traits of invertebrates animals They are multi-cellular and all the cells are assigned different tasks They have no cell walls They reproduce by two reproductive cells or gametes

CLASSIFICATION OF VERTEBRATES CLASSIFICATION OF VERTEBRATES They are known as sponges. They live in salt water fixed to some object. Their body is covered with pores through which their food enters. Sponges (Poriferans) 1. 2. 3. 1 2 They live in the marine habitat. The body is like a tube with one opening called mouth. Mouth is surrounded by tentacles that help in capturing prey. They have a radially symmetrical body. Cnidarians (Jellyfish) 1. 2. 3. 4.

CLASSIFICATION OF VERTEBRATES CLASSIFICATION OF VERTEBRATES They can be found in marine/fresh water. They have flat, ribbon shaped body. The body is bilaterally symmetrical. The body has a single opening. Most of them are parasites. Platyhelminthes (Flatworms) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 3 4 They are found in fresh/marine water or on land. They have a thread like, rounded body. They have an unsegmented body. Their body has two openings, mouth and anus. Nemathelminthes (Roundworms) 1. 2. 3. 4.

CLASSIFICATION OF VERTEBRATES CLASSIFICATION OF VERTEBRATES Animals have a soft unsegmented body with an external hard shell. Molluscs (Soft bodied shelled animals) 1. 7 8 They live in the marine environment and have spines all over the body. The body is radially symmetrical. Their body has two openings, mouth and anus. They have tube like feet having suckers. Echinoderms (Spiny-skinned animals) 1. 2. 3. 4.
