INTRODUCTION
This report is a requirement for the completion of Teaching Practicum 1 (EDC 2901)
or the School Orientation Programme (SOP) and had to be done within four weeks. This course
is exposure for Bachelor of Education students to the school environment and relates the
experience gained from the programme with what has been taught in the classroom and
school’s activities.
The School Orientation Programme (SOP) was completed in four (4) weeks from 26th
of July 2021 until 20th of August 2021. Considering amid pandemic of COVID-19, the home-
based Teaching and Learning (PdPR) was conducted during our SOP. The classes started
synchronously from Monday to Friday, starting from 7.30 a.m. and ended at 12.30 p.m. The
tutorial classes were conducted asynchronously, for students to complete their work assigned
by teachers.
There are six (6) sections in this report. Section 1 depicted the logbook of the school
profile from the establishment history to its administrative structure. Sections 2 and 3 described
the involvement in curriculum and co-curricular activities respectively during the SOP was
conducted. The next section explained the interview reports with four figures from the school
with the transcriptions attached in the appendices section. In section 5, the classroom
observations report was presented and ended with a conclusion in section 6. The appendices
were also included at the end of the report.
Therefore, it is hoped that trainee teachers can reflect on the experiences and make their
self-assessment to be effective teachers. I have chosen Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama
Miri (SMKAMi) which is nearby to my house and provide easy access for me to comprehend
the system of school as the academic staff and students are very cooperative and welcoming.

SECTION 1: SCHOOL PROFILE
1.1 BACKGROUND OF SCHOOL
1.1.1 Establishment History
SMK Agama Miri is one of the three religious schools established in 1985 in Sarawak.
With the existence of these three schools, there were four SMK Agama in Sarawak at that time.
The school was established on 5 January 1985 under the name of Sekolah Menengah Kerajaan
Agama Miri but the first registration of its students was held on 2nd January 1985. With the
existence of this school in Miri, it is hoped that it can meet the educational needs, especially
Islamic education for the children of the Muslim community from the Fourth and Fifth
Divisions.
At the beginning of its establishment, SMK Agama Miri was led by its first principal,
Encik Mahmood Bin Jali with eight teachers and eight staff. The story hidden behind the
establishment of this school is quite interesting because when this school was established, it
did not have its building and area. The first registration day was held at SK Anchi with a total
of 118 students registered.
As the temporary school building was not fully completed, the students and teachers
were transferred to Kolej Tun Dato Tunku Haji Bujang Miri (KTDTHB) on the same day after
the briefing. KTDTHB has helped this school a lot during the transfer process. KTDTHB
prepared and lent their facilities such as teachers' rooms, general offices, classrooms,
dormitories, teachers' houses and various other facilities needed by the people of this school.
The school stayed at the college while waiting for the school building to be completed
for a season and moved back to the SK Anchi area on the sacred date of May 1985. The event
is one of the unforgettable histories for the residents of SMK Agama Miri especially the
2
students and the pioneer teachers of this school because of the experience of boarding at Kolej
Tun Dato Tunku Haji Bujang Miri was a challenging period. Challenges because sharing bed,
a place to study and teach, a place to eat and sharing everything. During the period, students
and teachers felt that the situation was very self-testing. However, it is undeniable that the help
from Kolej Tun Dato Tunku Haji Bujang Miri is huge, very much appreciated and unforgettable.
Since moving to the Anchi Government Primary School Area, it was only then that the
students and teachers feel a little comfortable even though they still share the area. The school
still lacks a lot in terms of physical facilities and basic amenities. Among the physical facilities
available at that time were two blocks for classrooms, one block of Science Laboratory (lower),
four blocks of the dormitory, two blocks of teacher's flat, one block of the Dining Hall (also
known as a Multipurpose Hall), two courts (one divided for the construction of the surau site)
and borrowed the ground floor of SK Anchi block for the General Office and Library. However,
after the transfer, SMK Agama Miri underwent two study sessions, namely the morning session
for Form 3 to Form 6 students and the afternoon session for Form 1 and Form 2 students.
The project in increasing physical facilities began in 1991 with the construction of a
Science Laboratory (above) and a surau block. Meanwhile, the school's long-term development
plan has been included through the 6th Malaysia Plan and the site of a new school area has
been identified. At the end of 1999, the new school building in Kampung Tukau, Miri was fully
completed and relocation work involving students as well as teachers and support staff was
undertaken.
On 17th January 2000, a historic moment began where the new building of SMK
Agama Miri, which has been awaited by all school children, officially began its era. The large
3
and sophisticated school building complete with all these facilities has cost almost RM 35
million. It is located in Tukau, Jalan Bakam, which is 15 kilometres from Miri City.
That year was also the first year that school sessions were conducted at the school's new
site and also the first time in a long time, school hours were standardized to one session only.
The physical facilities at this new school are far different from the old school. Among the
facilities provided are spacious and comfortable classrooms, fully-equipped laboratories such
as science laboratories, computer laboratories and other laboratories such as Biology, Physics,
and Chemistry laboratories. A large and beautiful mosque, spacious and comfortable
dormitories, dining hall, school hall, library, audio-visual room, Kemahiran Hidup Bersepadu
(KHB) laboratories and numerous sports venues are also available. New equipment and
furniture have also been supplied for the convenience of the school residents.
The school building initially consisted of two units for general offices and teachers'
rooms, one classroom block, one mixed science laboratory block, two dormitory blocks namely
male and female dormitories, one dining hall block, one teacher's house block, two playing
fields and two ablution blocks. Before the surau was built, the dining hall or large hall was
used as a place of prayer for students. However, as the number of students increased, tennis
courts were used as a place for congregational prayers because the deficiency is not the main
thing that prevents them from doing daily activities.
Along with the increase in students, other buildings were also added such as two more
dormitory blocks; a block for male students and a block for female students, one laboratory
block which is a low general laboratory unit and another chemical and practical laboratory unit.
Similarly, a surau building has been built on the site of a basketball court and another teacher
residence block has also been built which contains six units.
4
After reaching the age of 25 years of its establishment, SMK Agama Miri has now
become one of the renowned schools in Sarawak with excellence in various fields. Reviewing
its history, it is admitted that all the difficulties of the past are now over. Hopefully, this school
will bring more success and excellence as well as its students and teachers will continue to
make the name of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama Miri on the world stage in the future.

1.7 ANALYSIS, COMMENTS AND EVALUATION OF SCHOOL PROFILE
1.7.1 Positive Aspects
The School Orientation Programme (SOP) is an important programme that helps us to
prepare for the real world as future educators. I had the opportunity to attend certain classes for
classroom reflection throughout my month-long participation in the SOP programme. In the
meantime, for school activities participation, I involved some of them virtually since the school
still conducted online such as involving some co-curricular sessions, attending a programme
with Form 5 students, teachers and parents through Google Meet, creating contest posters for
publication and so on. These provide me with the opportunities to observe how teachers
approach a programme. During COVID-19, co-curricular activities are limited, but some
competitions and events continue to follow all MOE guidelines. This new norm management
experience is both a difference and new knowledge for other instructors, as well as a new
experience for us as practical teachers.
The most interesting element that has been discovered is that various good ideas can be
used as guides for future educators. The SOP has provided me with numerous benefits in terms
of providing initial exposure to the school from the perspective of a teacher. Furthermore, it
motivates me as a prospective educator to learn about student behaviour, school administration,
classroom management, and how the school trust operates. Some of these are new to me in
practice since I had previously heard about them theoretically.
SMK Agama Miri (SMKAMi) also offers many goal-oriented and well-trained teachers
who are willing to assist pupils. These educators can be thought of as one of the supporting
columns that aid to shape the characters' growth, discipline, and true potential. They are
learning not only about academics and scholastics but also about virtues.
33
Apart from that, due to its achievements in the curriculum and co-curriculum, this
school is well-known and excellently, particularly in Miri, Sarawak. The majority of activities
are carried out at the regional, state, and national levels.
1.7.2 Issues and Challenges
Every school has its own set of issues, problems, and obstacles. Since the COVID-19
pandemic wreaked havoc on people's lives all across the world, particularly in Malaysia, every
sector, including education, has been impacted. As a result of the outbreak, online classes, also
known as Teaching and Learning from Home (PdPR), have become prominent as a
replacement for Learning and Facilitating (PdPc).
The commitment of students to attend and participate in online classes is the most
significant issue and obstacle that occurs during online teaching and learning. It happens in
almost every school, and SMK Agama Miri is no exception. The problem occurs as a result of
connection troubles that almost all students face, as some live in remote areas and find it
difficult to access the Internet and keep a stable connection to attend class.
Apart from that, some of them already have adequate facilities, but due to a lack of
awareness and discipline, they continue to refuse to attend online classes for no apparent reason.
Some of them, for example, purposefully staying up all night playing games with mates,
chatting via WhatsApp or scrolling social media, resulting in a late wake-up and missing class.
Meanwhile, some students do not have enough gadgets at home and must share them with their
siblings, causing online lessons to be inaccessible.
While online sessions have their own set of hurdles and obstacles, face-to-face sessions
are no exception despite being done physically. When it comes to the school's issues, the
biggest issue that is always brought up is about the pupils' discipline and attitudes. Teachers
34
were confronted with a variety of issues involving student discipline, such as disrespect for
teachers, fighting among pupils, and avoiding congregational prayers, to name a few. These
types of issues are common at boarding schools. As a result, the school administration places
a strong focus on proper manners and values. The emphasis on prayers is the only significant
strategy to overcome problems with students' attitudes. Prayer practice will have an impact on
student's attitudes and behaviours, as well as other parts of their lives.
Sometimes, student-related issues are far more intricate than other issues. Some
problems are directly solvable by the school. Some of them may prompt discussion among
teachers or even administrators. When a problem cannot be resolved at the school level, it will
be brought to the attention of higher administration, which is the District Education Office
(PPD). Some situations may necessitate a discussion with parents, while others may merely
require help from the guidance and counselling service. It cannot be guaranteed that all of the
difficulties and issues will be fixed, but the number of problems and issues will be minimised.
Furthermore, when it comes to administration, the lack of financial support for students'
activities and programmes is always a concern. This occurs in nearly every ordinary school.
However, with the help of PIBG and a few NGOs, this is no longer an issue as long as the use
of financial aid benefits the student's development.
Therefore, all schools face barriers and challenges when it comes to managing the
school's administration. Every individual's involvement is equally vital in resolving the issues
that arise so that the school administration is not impacted and the students' development is not
affected in any way.
35
1.7.3 Evaluation of School Profile
In Miri, Sarawak, SMK Agama Miri is the sole Islamic secondary school. Among the
SMKA standard schools, SMKAMi is one of the best. It is demonstrated by the greatest and
consistent achievements each year in all areas of academics, leadership, discipline, and co-
curriculum, as well as the participation and cooperation of teachers and students in enhancing
school management quality.
The school administration continually provides the highest level of service to the whole
school community. The renovation of the school musolla eventually transforms it into a large,
convenient, and beautiful prayer hall equipped with technological and electronic devices such
as a large liquid-crystal display (LCD), projector, and air-conditioners, which provide comfort
to the school community in performing congregational prayers while also encouraging them to
stay close to musolla. As a result, SMKAMi won first place at the national level in Anugerah
Imarah Surau (ASISS), establishing themselves as a benchmark and a source of pride for other
schools.
Furthermore, this school has the best library, Pusat Sumber As-Syafie, which won the
Anugerah Pusat Sumber Sekolah Peringkat Negeri Sarawak in 2021. In addition, the school
has the best toilet and has been awarded the winner of Pertandingan Tandas Bersih 1Malaysia.
Furthermore, my assessment of school administration is well-organized. All of the documents
and activities have been meticulously documented. This school also made efforts to establish
excellent infrastructure, which are still in place nowadays, to ensure that the Learning and
Facilitating (PdPc) process is not disrupted. Every year, SMK Agama Miri prioritises the
provision and improvement of facilities and infrastructure.
36
1.7.4 Analysis of School’s Best Practices and Management
Best practices and management should be applied and prioritised to obtain the greatest
degree of student performance and development in all areas. The school administration
emphasises some best practices. According to the school slogan, "Adab dan Akhlak Keutamaan
Kami," which means "manners and morals are our priority," it may be deduced that the school
places a high value on students' attitudes and manners in their daily lives. Morals and etiquette
have an indirect impact on other parts of students' lives, including their academic, physical,
emotional, and spiritual well-being.
The emphasis on mandatory prayer is the most important aspect in achieving this goal.
During the physical sessions, students are taught to wake up an hour before dawn, about 4 a.m.,
to prepare for the congregational Subh prayer in the musolla. All pupils must do salah in
musolla, and those who fail to do so will be penalised. The hostel wardens are dedicated to
ensuring that every student participates in congregational prayer five times a day. Following
Subh prayer, the students will form a circle in which they will recite two pages of the Quran
together, led by BADAR.
Aside from that, the students are required to assemble in Salahuddin school square and
recite the al-Mathurat after eating breakfast in the Dining Hall and soon before beginning the
Learning and Facilitating (PdPc) sessions. Every student receives a Dalil Rafiqi, a little book
containing a few surahs, al-Mathurat, and dua. This activity is done every morning as part of
the day's introduction to ensure that the students are prepared to begin the learning session.
The students will take a break for lunch and Zuhr prayer about 12:30 p.m. All pupils
are required to participate in congregational Zuhr prayer in musolla, which is supervised by
teachers on duty, school prefects, and BADAR. It is to ensure that students constantly place a
37
high value on congregational prayer. Not just that, but students are supposed to pray in
congregation at every prayer because Muslims who pray in congregation received great
blessings.
Like a lot of fadhilat gained by practising this matter, all students are trained to recite
the Hizbul Bahri zikr about 10 minutes before the Maghrib prayer. This is the initiative of the
current principal, Ustaz Ahmad Fauzi bin Yaakob, who wants to make sure that the students
are on time and doing meaningful things with their time. After the Subh prayer, the students
sat in their separate circles for the recitation of four pages of the Quran and led by BADAR,
which took place right before their preparation class. Around 30 minutes before bedtime, all
students would sit in a circle in their particular dorms with their dormmates and begin reciting
Surah Al-Mulk, which is one of the Prophet Muhammad's Sunnah and comes with a
multiplicity of rewards for those who perform it every night.
In conclusion, the school administration organises a variety of activities and
programmes to assist students' academic, leadership, and co-curricular progress. Nonetheless,
the abovementioned practises are the most important and effective practices implemented by
the school to mould students' manners and attitudes to achieve overall success and produce
individuals who can contribute to their families, society, country, and religion.
38
SECTION 2: CLASSROOM REFLECTION
2.1 INVOLVEMENT IN TEACHING AND LEARNING RESOURCES IN THE
CLASSROOM
One of the requirement should be included are the involvement in Teaching and
Learning resources in the classroom. Because the COVID-19 epidemic is getting more serious,
the school are closed and be replaced with an online session. During online teaching and
learning, there are only a few activities that can be conducted since it is limited to do other
things plus some students faced the problem with the connection. Nonetheless, I was permitted
to participate in some organised online classes and assist the teacher in some way throughout
the PdPR. Several concerns arose during the lesson, but fortunately, the teacher was able to
effectively address them.
2.1.1 Creating Games for Students’ Assessment
Figure 40 Student's Assessment via Quizizz
39
Figure 41 Student's Assessment via Wordwall Games
During the online learning session, I was assigned by one of the Arabic teachers to
create some games for students’ assessments. The games that were chosen are Quizizz and
Wordwall. The motives for choosing these games are it is easier to be played individually
depending on students’ time.
The first game I made is Quizizz. As can be seen, Quizizz is quite similar to Kahoot,
which is a popular educational game among academicians and educators. Quizizz is an
interactive student engagement platform, which offers multiple features to make the classroom
fun and engaging. Quizizz allows the teacher to conduct assessments, homework assignments
and many other interactions, in a captivating way for students of all ages. The salient features
that Quizizz users love and adore include student-paced and instructor-paced quizzes or lessons,
thousands of public quizzes and lessons, quiz editor and customization, reports and so on.
Meanwhile, Wordwall is a platform that allows teachers to easily create activities for
their classrooms. Examples include quizzes, matchups, word games and much more. Wordwall
40
activities can be played on any web-enabled device and teachers have the option of creating
print materials based on those activities. The benefits of using Wordwall are the teachers can
easily gamify the learning experience. Besides, Wordwall activities can be embedded into a
website, in case the teacher already has a particular educational website, it can be included with
Wordwall. The educational game also has a variety of pre-made resources and teachers can
share their creations.
2.1.2 Creating Slides using Google Slides for Students’ References
Figure 42 & 43 Google Slides of PQS Subject
41
During the online learning session, I was assigned to make a slideshow of Pendidikan
Al-Quran dan As-Sunnah (PQS) subject by one of the PQS teachers for students’ references.
The slides were created through Google Slide.
PowerPoint is one of the most popular and familiar software that people have used.
Many types of other software were released in recent times as an alternative to PowerPoint
such as examples are LibreOffice Impress, WpsOffice Presentation, etc. But among all these
software Google Slides is the most advanced software. There are many advanced features are
attached to the Google Slides.
The first benefit of utilising Google Slides is that it is entirely free. There is a variety
of presenting software available that charge the user for a fee, whether it is a monthly
subscription price or a one-time fee. However, Google Slides is free, and we are not required
to pay anyone for the use of these presenting apps.
Apart from that, Google Slides is an online web-based application and there is no need
to download this software since, in most presentation applications, we have to download the
complete file format which will slow down your computer. To access Google Slides all you
need is a web browser and a steady internet connection. Therefore it does not affect our
computer speeds.
42
2.1.3 Discovering the sample of Form One Arabic examination question
Since I am doing my S.O.P. in the school, I was offering myself to discover the sample
of Form One Arabic examination question. It was not that easy to find the right sample of
examination questions that were in line with the actual public examination questions. But, I
accepted the challenges and tried to figure out some examination questions that almost follow
the real exam question.
Figure 44 & 45 The Sample of Arabic Examination Questions
43
2.1.4 Creating Infographic about I’rab via Canva
Figure 46 Arabic Notes
Apart from that, I was assigned to create some infographic posters about I’rab for the
nouns in the Arabic language. The aim of creating these posters is to ease the students in
understanding the usage of I’rab and attract them to learn. As we know, visual learning helps
a lot of students in responding to information faster compared to textual information.
Learning using pictures has several advantages, including being a more effective
learning method. It has a big effect on the brain because it aids in the retention of information
for a longer period. It can capture an image more quickly than text. Visual learning, as opposed
to reading from a textbook, aids self-study. They do not require the teacher to teach them a
topic that can be accomplished with a graphic poster. It enhances one's ability to learn.
44
Aside from that, it made the learning process easier. It facilitates student interaction
with teachers and makes learning more enjoyable. They can learn complex concepts more
straightforwardly. The difficult topic may be understood simply by viewing the visual
information, resulting in superior learning outcomes. It contains a variety of conveniently
accessible items such as graphs, images, and charts.
2.2 REFLECTION
During my participation in Teaching and Learning from Home (PdPR), I gained a lot
of valuable and unforgettable experiences of being in the classroom as an assistant teacher of
Arabic language subjects. I can learn about classroom management, see how teachers provide
information and deliver content, take experience managing activities, providing some teaching
aids and notes and other academic matters at school. This encourages me to learn to think
outside of the box and always be enthusiastic to give contributions and participation in the
classroom well. Mastery of knowledge and skills must be balanced so a teacher can attract
students to focus and give full attention in the classroom.
Some weaknesses also have been discovered during my involvement in PdPR. It can
be seen that only particular students who participate well in class, responses to the teacher’s
instruction and complete their tasks efficiently. Meanwhile, the others kept silent and
sometimes, due to the connection problems, they could not participate well. Their voices kept
unheard and sometimes being ambiguous. It resulted in a lack of understanding about the topic
and affected the students’ academic progress.
Besides, since it was conducted virtually, it is undeniable that a lot of challenges has
been encountered during my participation in Teaching and Learning from Home (PdPR). Some
activities in the classroom were limited and I found it difficult to give some contributions
45
because the preparation for the online session was already being prepared by the teacher herself.
Sometimes, I had to offer myself to help the teacher to make notes or slide so that I can
document my involvement. Not only that, but I also faced difficulties in contacting some
teachers because they were seldomly online plus I was unable to meet them in person.
For a student, the teaching and learning session is vital. The student is the reflection of
the teacher. The tremendous efforts of teachers and students are reflected in the high student
performance. Poor academic achievement, however, does not imply that teachers are the worst;
rather, teachers must strive to identify the finest solutions and initiatives that can be
implemented so that students may learn and apply knowledge effectively.
46
SECTION 3: PARTICIPATION IN CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
3.1 INVOLVEMENT IN CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
SMK Agama Miri is quite engaged in co-curricular activities and has a lot of
achievement in sports, uniform bodies, clubs, and other activities. Nonetheless, because the
COVID-19 epidemic is more serious, the school must close and be replaced with an online
session. Since it is held digitally, the co-curricular activities are limited, and only a few can be
carried out. Yet, I was allowed to engage in several online activities organised by the school
and teachers. There are obvious inadequacies and constraints that teachers and students
experience when participating in co-curricular activities, but these issues can be handled with
the participation and support of all teachers and administration.
3.1.1 Preparing Arabic Public Speaking’s Script (Kalimatus Sobah)
Figure 47 The sample script for Kalimatus Sobah
47
