ThisextremelyrarebronzeportraitsculpturebyWilliam Leechofhiswife,MayBotterell
istheartist'sonlyknownpieceofsculpture,andwascastfrom hisoriginalplastermodel.
Althoughdatingfrom circa1920/25,theoriginalsculptureremainedintheartist'sown
collectioninSurrey,untilitwasbequeathedtohisfriendandbiographer,thepoetandart
historian,AlanDenson,andwasonlyexhibitedpubliclyforthefirsttimebytheGorry
Gallery,Dublinin1988.Denson’sbiographyofLeech,entitled“AnIrishArtist,W.J.Leech
R.H.A.1881–1968”waspublishedin1968andcontainsanillustrationofthisbronze.This
bronzeisthefirstfrom aneditionoftwelve,castbytheDublinArtFoundry,andthe
originalplastermodelfrom whichthebronzewascastisnowhousedintheNationalGallery
ofIreland,thusensuringthatthislimitededitioncouldneverberepeated.

TheFlyingHorseofGansu,from thesecondcenturyCE,wasdiscoveredin1969ina
burialchamberunderamonasteryinWuweiprovince,China.Itinstantlybecameaniconic
imageinChina,andmonumentalversionswereinstalledthroughoutthecountry.The
original,housedintheGansuMuseum isconsideredtobeoneofthemostvaluableartistic
treasuresintheworld.ThisversionbyBritishsculptor,LeonardStocktingwasmadewhen
heworkedfortheMorrisSingerfoundryinLondon,oneofEngland’sleadingfoundries,
whichproducediconicpublicsculptures,suchasthefigureofErosinPiccadillyCircusand
thelionsatTrafalgarSquare.Theyalsoproducedmanybronzesculpturesforartistssuch
asBarbaraHepworthandHenryMoore.

ThisbronzesculptureofMercuryisoneofPigalle’smostrecognisedandcelebrated
sculptures,comparedbyVoltairetothefinestsculpturesofGreekantiquity.He
conceivedtheoriginalpieceinplasterin1742,havingreturnedtoParisafterfiveyears
studyinginRome.ThispiecewaspresentedattheSalonof1742,pairedwithafigure
ofVenus.BothstatuesweresubsequentlymadeinmarblefortheKing.Bythistime
PigalleworkedalmostexclusivelyonroyalcommissionsforLouisXV andothersinthe
royalcourt.Healsoproducedanumberoflargescalepublicmonuments.Thesuccess
ofPigalle’sMercuryleadtoitbeingfeaturedinmanycontemporarypaintings,withthe
painterChardin,afriendofPigalle’s,usingittosymbolizesculptureinhispaintings,The
DrawingLessonandTheAttributesoftheArts.Suchwasthepopularityofthispiecethat
theSèvresporcelaincompanyalsoproducedasmallerporcelainversion.Pigalle’smarble
sculptureofMercuryisnow housedintheLouvre,Paris.
