• James Thomas Brudenell was the son of 425 S Whitley Dr. #12 Fruitland, ID 83619
an earl, born into a pampered life in Britain.
When his father died, he inherited the title
of earl and was called by the title of the
place he lived. He wanted an important
position in the British army. In 1824 he got
it, even though he had no military training.
• At the time it was accepted practice
for rich people to be handed military
appointments. When England went up
against Russia in the Crimean War, he
was given command of the Light Brigade
of Cavalry and named brigadier general.
While the men of the Light Brigade slept
in mud, he slept on his nearby yacht. He
wore shiny boots and tall plumed hats.
On chilly days he often wore a jacket-like
sweater. According legend, he didn’t like
the sweater to hide the gilt edging on his
royal blue tunic, so he wore only sweaters
that hung open down the front.
• When he made his suicide ride through
Balaklava leading the charge of the Light
Brigade, he went down in history. Today
we remember Brudenell for the open
sweater he wore which is named after the
place he lived, a style later made famous
by Mr. Rogers on his children’s show in
the 1960s. What’s it called?

Shame, shame, shame?
A few years back on Facebook, I outed myself for a movie faux
pas -- I had never seen “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” It’s
one of those films that are quoted and referenced in all manner
of ways, assuming much of the time that it’s been universally
viewed. And it turns out there are a great many of these films
and just as many people out there who have never seen them -- in the dark about their plots, not in on the joke and nev-
er intending to be. My post became a completely unofficial survey, with several titles popping up again and again. Have you
seen them? What’s your guilty little movie secret?
“Star Wars” -- George Lucas’ space saga has many chapters, and very opinionated fans. There are those who have seen the
first three films from 1977-1983 (episodes 4, 5 and 6), but not the prequel trilogy from 1999-2005 (episodes 1, 2 and 3). Or
those who have seen 1-6 (all by Lucas), but not the subsequent trilogy (episodes 7, 8 and 9) done after he sold the franchise.
“Gone With the Wind” -- The Civil War raged, Scarlet O’Hara pouted and Rhett Butler didn’t give a damn. So, too, did several
people in my survey, who admitted that an almost four-hour running time was no enticement to view this 1939 classic.
“The Goonies” -- This mid-’80s adventure starring Sean Astin as a little kid who chases the legend of One-Eyed Willie was
pure gold to me, but not to many of my younger friends, who admit to not having made time to “Never Say Die!”
“The Godfather” -- Marlon Brando and Al Pacino shepherd the Corleone family through good times and bad, but you have to
see it to know what offer the Don makes that can’t be refused or what it means when someone “sleeps with the fishes.”
“The Wizard of Oz” -- “Follow the yellow brick road” to a place that’s “not in Kansas anymore.” Many of my respondents ad-
mitted that even if they hadn’t seen the film start to finish, they feel like they’ve seen it as ubiquitously as the film is refer-
enced.
“A Christmas Story” and “It’s a Wonderful Life” -- Two holiday masterpieces that run so much during the season that it’s hard
to believe ANYONE could have escaped viewing, but nonetheless both ranked highly on the secretly-never-seen list.
“Pulp Fiction” -- Quentin Tarantino turned the movie-making industry on its head with this super-cool and eminently quotable
flick that weaves together the stories of criminals and criminal adjacents.
“The Sound of Music” -- Julie Andrews plays Maria, governess to seven children, who sparks a love of music and joy that lead
to a family band. Today’s teeny-boppers may be surprised to find that one of this musical’s numbers is the source of Ariana
Grande’s “7 Rings” riff.

A Toast to Your Health
---
One of the best things about writing a food and recipe column is the opportunity to introduce my family,
friends and readers to something new. I also enjoy experimenting with new ingredients and products.
Recently, I discovered a wonderful line of naturally sweetened, zero-calorie beverages called Zevia. It’s
one of the first drink brands focused on healthy versions of sodas (14 different kinds), energy drinks
(grapefruit, mango ginger, raspberry, lime and kola), sparking water (lime, blackberry, Mandarin orange
and cucumber lemon), as well as a line of mixers, organic teas and Zevia Kidz.
So, what is Zevia Kidz? It’s got the fizz of soda and the tangy sweet flavor of juice, but somehow it’s
neither. It keeps all the good stuff and leaves out all the bad with zero sugar and nothing artificial. Zevia
formulas also are certified non-GMO, vegan, kosher, color-free, gluten-free, keto and paleo-friendly. I
served the Zevia Kidz to children ages 3 to 10, and they loved the taste and the colorful Disney charac-
ters on the cans.
Zevia is the brainchild of founder and CEO Paddy Spence, a key figure in the natural food industry for
more than 25 years. Paddy and his wife quit sugar 18 years ago, and since then he has completed in
numerous triathlons and marathons. Zevia is the official soda of the CrossFit Games, an event that has
banned bigger brands high in sugar content. You can find Zevia at thousands of grocery stores.
While Zevia is a healthy and delicious drink, it’s also great as a nutritious, zero-calorie ingredient in drink recipes, snacks, main course dishes and des-
serts. Use it to create a light, crispy batter for the Zevia Orange Cauliflower Poppers, as the salad dressing base for the Quinoa Salad and to give a won-
derful strawberry flavor and sweetness to the batter for the Strawberry Almond Cobbler. It’s the perfect way to cut calories to create a “new you” in the
new year!

if desired.
