FAST FACT
• The practice of hanging garlic, lemon,
and red chili at the door or in a shop to
ward off potential evil is common in India.
GARLIC BREATH
• Afraid of garlic breath? Some people
claim that yeast tablets swallowed with the
meal will prevent that problem. Chewing
caraway seeds or parsley also helps.
• Studies have shown sipping milk at the
same time as consuming garlic can help
neutralize bad breath. Mixing garlic with
milk in the mouth before swallowing
reduces the odor better than drinking milk
afterward. Plain water, mushrooms and
basil may also help, but the mix of fat and
water found in milk is the most effective.
• Garlic breath actually arises from the lungs
and not from the mouth.
• To get the smell off fingers, rub with salt and
lemon juice.

George Clooney plays a hotshot, know-it-all, stock-picking finan-
cial influencer with his own TV show in the 2016 thriller “Money
Monster.” Jack O’Connell plays a viewer who storms the set, tak-
ing everyone hostage after a tip from the “Money Monster” ruined
his personal finances. Scary, no? That’s the stock market for you.
Big money, big risk and sometimes tragedy.
What’s got me thinking about money is the stimulus check I got last week and the wild few minutes that I felt relatively rich
-- before I paid my bills and made respectable purchases like the adult that I am. Here are five stock-market movies to put
you on a wild, vicarious financial ride.
“The Big Short” -- Based on a true story -- during a period in time of which many of us are painfully aware -- this is a funny
and informative take on the central players in the 2007-2008 housing bubble collapse. Independent hedge fund managers
and bank reps see the inevitable tanking of the housing market and commit to cashing in on it by betting against repayment
of subprime mortgages through complicated financial instruments called CDOs. Stars Christian Bale, Steven Carrell, Brad Pitt
and Ryan Gosling.
“The Wolf of Wall Street” -- Leonardo DiCaprio at his wicked, decadent, corrupt best, stars as Jordan Belfort, a relentless and
hard-partying broker who has it all, loses it all and then reclaims it again before being targeted by the feds. Jonah Hill plays
Donnie Azoff, a partner in Jordan’s fraudulent brokerage that they populate with young, brash hucksters pressed hard to
make the sale.
“Wall Street” -- The quintessential stock-market flick. Bud Fox (Charlie Sheen) is an ambitious young buck who idolizes the
uber successful Gordon Gecko (Michael Douglas). He snags a spot as Gecko’s apprentice, but only by skirting the law and as-
sisting in underhanded, insider trading tactics. Oftentimes, a meteoric rise comes with a mighty fall.
“Boiler Room” -- Seth (Giovanni Ribisi) is recruited as a junior broker trainee with the promise that with a little effort and
some loose morals, he can get rich quick and impress his judge father and the ladies. It happens, but he finds out the firm’s
dirty little secret: They are experts at the “pump and dump,” a technique that uses pressure tactics to drive the price up on a
worthless stock that will inevitably crash. Also stars Vin Diesel, Ben Affleck and Nia Long.
“Trading Places” -- Two unconscionable stockbroker brothers, Mortimer and Randolph Duke, bet on a social experiment: Can
a street-smart hustler do just as well in the high-falutin’ world of finance, and will a prosperous and privileged snob keep his
feet when faced with adverse circumstances -- i.e., after he’s set up for a crime he didn’t commit and loses all his advantag-
es? It’s a prince and pauper classic comedy starring Eddie Murphy and Dan Ackroyd.

Spring Onions Flavor the Season
There’s nothing like the intense flavor (or the smell) of an
onion. Wild onions were among the first foods that mankind
gathered and ate and are one of the first signs of spring. On-
ions are in the allium family, along with garlic and shallots.
Spring onions are one of my favorite varieties. Spring onions
are also called green onions, young onions, pencil onion and
scallions. Scallions aren’t as fully ripened as a green onion and
should not have a bulb. Spring onions are the milder, first stage of a mature onion. If left in
the ground to grow, they’ll form into an onion bulb.
Larger, older, spring onions may have limp or faded stalks and a stronger flavor than the
smaller ones. Spring onions should be small and thin, with a firm base at the root tip and
crisp, bright green leaves. Select spring onions that are not fully developed with a white
bulb end and long green stalks. The flavor of the leaves is milder than the root end. Spring
onions will keep for five to seven days when wrapped in plastic and stored in the refrigera-
tor.
Spring onions are a great source of vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, calcium and fiber. They also
contain a substance that prevents the formation of blood clots. Eating onions also helps to
lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
To prepare spring onions, cut off the roots and peel away the outer layer to remove any lin-
gering dirt. Next, rinse the leaves, spreading them gently with your fingers to get at the dirt
in the crevices. Both parts are edible. Although the white bulb is most often listed as part of
recipes, the green leaves should also be incorporated in the recipes and as a garnish.
You also can use the leaves to add a wonderful burst of green color, to tie up appetizers into
a package or to use as a frilly, edible garnish. To curl the ends, cut off the roots and all but
about 3 inches of the green tops. Slice the tops lengthwise down from the green end into
the white section. Put the leaves in cold water and chill for several hours to curl them.
While spring onions are best served raw, they’re also delicious grilled or sauteed. Spring on-
ions should be added during the final stages of a recipe for maximum flavor.
This Spring Onion Pesto is the perfect way to flavor couscous or orzo pasta, to tuck under
the skin of chicken, or to place on fish or pork before grilling or baking.
