stress. When you put an automatic weapon in the
hands of unstable people, you’re bound to have
an incident such as what hit Afghanistan this
week.

Part of the blame has to be placed on high
military officers for tolerating the kind of
personal corruption, bad attitudes about the
locals, and bad moral conduct that goes on all the
time in military units. Sure, you can’t stop all of
it, but I happen to know from personal
experience that bad moral conduct and local-
bashing language is condoned. There’s definitely
an atmosphere of justification in combat zones
that “everybody does it.”

Let me say outright: There has not ever been a
soldier who goes berserk or rogue who hasn’t
given numerous prior signs of instability and
evil tendencies before—which have been
disregarded or covered up by his peers and
superiors. And, it’s that excessive tolerance of
problem people that must change–especially
when they are given access to lethal weapons.

The only silver lining in this Afghan slaying by a
rogue soldier is that it makes it much more
probable that the US won’t be able to stay
indefinitely in that country, as planned. Multiple
