Rotary Foundation Month
PUTTING THE WHEEL IN MOTION.
Report by PP Suzanne
Only six members had a happy little meeting on Monday last.
T’was good to see Ken back, hail and hearty, doing his ‘welcoming’ job to perfection.
Barry is working on the best way to accurately record our service hours.
Michael will be away next weekend and with only 3 volunteers for the Ham Wheel we all decided to
postpone its commencement until the weekend after.
Robyn extracted $7.70 from us with questions on the ten tallest mountains. She also encouraged us to win
the wine by guessing where P. Peter went cruising. Robyn says Whitsundays, Ken says New Zealand and I
say Murray River. Someone else may have said Gold Coast. George Jack had difficulty getting a word in.
Robyn also introduced the guest speaker....me....and I spoke on the War Love Story of my grandparents in
Belgium nearly 100years ago!
AGM is this Monday 16th November with a vote on an amendment to our by-laws as well as election of
next year's board. We have one board nomination with Janet Sprigge agreeing to continue with her current
portfolio of Foundation. At this point all other positions are open.
BE A GIFT TO THE WORLD make a nomination, accept a nomination or even let our current President Peter
know your interest in becoming a board member.
P.P. Suzanne Cashmere.

Last Week's Speaker PP Suzanne Cashmere
A Story of war and love
Suzanne's Grandparents Simone and Charlie
Charles Joseph Cashmere senior.
My grandfather was an infantry solder during World War I and lived to be a father to my father'
Charles Joseph Cashmere jnr. ( Charlie or Joe to his sisters).
My grandfather signed up on 10.8.16 and took the oath at Bathurst on 15th August 1916.
Serial no. 2881, he was all of 5 foot 7 inches, weighed 119 lbs. at the young age of just 18 yrs and
6 months.
He embarked on the Africa for England arriving at Plymouth on 9th January 1917. He was a
member of the 57th Battalion, and served in Flikes, France. He was moved to Belgium on 10th
November 1919 where he met Marie Simone Gerin (19 yrs) and they married in Belgium 15th
November, just 5 days later. Both returned to Australia arriving on 20th December 1919, and
settled in Orange NSW where they had two boys, the first, Neville (Octave) Cashmere, and 2
years later Charles Joseph Cashmere jnr.
Simone who spoke French, very little English and had never ventured so far away from Belgium
and her parents, was understandingly home sick. The shine had left the marriage but it was
agreed that she take the boys back to Belgium.
The tickets bought and the passage booked the departure date arrived. Charlie helped with
boarding, getting them all settled in the cabin and last goodbyes as ship readied for departure.
The story goes that Charlie left his departure to last minute, taking the two month old baby with
him. The ship then left for Europe, Simone had the two year old boy and Charlie had the two
month old baby boy who never saw his mother or brother for next 60 yrs.
Simone did return to Australia for a short time but was not happy here and returned to Belgium to
die.

Looks Like RYPEN will be a no go
this coming year
Our Club needs a Rotary Youth Program of
Enrichment (RYPEN) Coordinator
or
we will not be in a position to send a candidate to
this fantastic youth program.
This would have to be one of the easiest jobs to do in our
calendar being an integral part of our youth programs
and further enhancing our relationship with both
X XOrange High and Orange Anglican Grammar Schools.
What does it entail?
1. Send Application Form and Information For Schools to local schools and promote RYPEN in schools
2. Interview & select applicants
3. Complete Club Sponsorship form
4. Remind students to complete the online Medical Consent form for Borambola
5. Send Application Forms and Club Sponsorship form to RYPEN committee ASAP – the sooner the better.
6. Send payment ASAP
X X7. Assist in coordinating pickups/drop-offs for transport
It might sound like a lot but be assured there are experienced club members to assist.
We need your help. Can you be our RYPEN Coordinator for 2015.
No Coordinator..... No Calare RYPEN Candidate!
