FriendSpeak Promotes Conversational
English-Learning Using the Bible

by Madilyn Hanks
FriendSpeak is a program that was launched at the Tri-C many years ago. When missionaries from

the UTA community returned home, they realized they could use the Bible to teach conversational
English to international students here at UTA, just like they were doing in other countries.

The program involves Tri-C volunteers meeting once or more a week with English language-
learning UTA international students at the Tri-C. During their meeting, they read texts from the Easy-
to-Read Version of the Bible and discuss spiritual topics in a safe, friendly environment.

“It brings people together who are very different to talk comfortably about very important things,”
Campus Minister Jerry Sandoval said. “I am always happy to see the progression of volunteers who are
at first apprehensive about their first meetings but then realize how fun and interesting it is to share
Jesus in this way.”

God Uses the Tri-C Daily

by Eddie and Marilyn Stinson
One day, as we were setting up for the food pantry, there was a new

student sitting nearby. She kept watching Cyndi, one of our campus ministers,
carrying things back and forth through the building. The student finally
asked if Cyndi needed any help. Cyndi replied that we were getting ready
to have a food pantry, and that we were preparing for it. At that point the
student started crying. Cyndi stopped what she doing and asked what was
wrong. The student opened up and shared her story.

She was a full time student and single mother who was also taking care
of her own disabled mother. She worked as a server in a restaurant to support
all of them. She had just told her mother that morning that they were out of
food in their apartment, and she was also out of money. She told her mom that she didn’t know what to
do. Her mom looked at her, and with great faith told her not to worry - that she would find a food pantry.
We hear stories like this almost every month. People telling us that they were completely out of food
in their home with no money left to buy any more for the next week or two. It is clear that God is at work
at the Tri-C.

Tri-C/UTA Food Pantry Serves UTA
Students and Staff

by Cyndi Needels

The Tri-C’s mission statement is “Walking alongside UTA students on their journey with God.” One
way we strive to carry out that mission is through the Tri-C/UTA Food Pantry. We officially began the
Food Pantry in fall 2015. Through our regular food service,
we learned how difficult it is for so many students to provide
their own regular meals. When we knew of a need, we would
gather food items for them.

The Tarrant Area Food Bank, being aware of the great
need on university campuses, was looking to get food to
UTA students. Since we already had a working relationship
with another local food pantry, Hearts and Hands, we were a
natural fit. God brought all of that together, and with the help
of our supporters, area churches and many volunteers, the
Tri-C/UTA Food Pantry now serves more than 100 different
students every month at our food distributions.

We carry out our mission statement through
the Food Pantry in many ways. As we work with
student volunteers and serve students needing
food, we get to know them and share the love
and joy of Jesus. we also offer to pray for to those
who come to the Food Pantry and follow up
on these prayer requests with an email offering
further support from the Tri-C. Many of the
students that we have significant relationships
with came to us through the Food Pantry.

To join us in our mission, you can make
a monetary donation or a donation of
non-perishable groceries. We also need
churches and organizations to hold food
drives to stock our pantry.
