Community Foundation 2017 Annual Report

2017 Annual Report

is to build permanent endowment funds
and meet charitable community needs.

2

Dear friends,

The future of our community is bright, and, through the generosity of our donors, it is one that will continue to develop, full of
promise. As you read through this report, we hope you will be inspired to reflect on how you can make a difference through
your legacy, and together, help write our future.

The foundation was started in blind faith by founding donors who believed in a better future for our community. In the
beginning, founding donors like Harry and Sara Huber pledged $25,000 to support foundation operations, and they continued
to give throughout their lifetime and estate (page 6).

Eighteen years later, the foundation continues to help donors make a difference. We work with donors like Dee Durham
to support her hometown (page 14), and the Grevas family to remember our former executive director, Bill Grevas. The
foundation was blessed to have Bill serve as one of its leaders. He will be remembered for his passion for family, friends and
community, and his legacy will continue to make an impact for years to come (page 12).

In addition to our donors, our future is defined by the work of our nonprofits and the next generation of leaders. The stories of
Child Care Aware (page 4), the Salina Fieldhouse (page 9), the Strategic Initiative grants (page 10), and scholarship recipient
Quinton Cook (page 13), are testaments that our future is headed in the right direction.

Thank you for your continued support of the foundation and our community. The future is full of opportunity, and we look
forward to partnering with you to write it together.

Larry Fief Jessica L. Martin

During their lifetimes, Harry and Sara Huber
established a Fund for the Future at the Greater
Salina Community Foundation. The Harry H. and
Sara W. Huber Fund will now provide permanent,
annual support for the following four charities:

• Kay Pogue Hospice of Salina
• American Red Cross of Central Kansas
• Salina Animal Shelter
• Salina Salvation Army

“They truly wanted Salina to
be all that it could be.”

- Sara Gault, the Hubers’ niece

The Hubers truly cared about the future of the community, as well.
When the Greater Salina Community Foundation started in 1999,
Harry and Sara took note and made a founding gift of $25,000 to
the foundation’s administrative endowment. They also left another
$25,000 gift to the the foundation in their estate plan.

“They thought the foundation had a good goal. They wanted
anything that would improve the quality of life in Salina and help
other people,” said Gault. “In the end, they left money to this
foundation, to the church, and to several others that they felt like
they could help.”

Gault also said her aunt and uncle “never wanted to do anything for
notoriety. They did a lot that no one ever knew about.”

Harry passed away on January 13, 2017, just days shy of his 103rd
birthday. Sara died nine months later on September 12, at age 99.
Harry and Sara spent the last of their 71 years together in a nursing
home, and they always kissed each other good night.

“They were very dedicated people,” she said. “They were dedicated to
each other, dedicated to Kansas Wesleyan, and they were dedicated
to the city of Salina. They truly wanted Salina to be all that it could
be, in every area. They wanted everything to be good.”

Last year, the Greater Salina Community Foundation was challenged by the Dane G. Hansen
