ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY PROJECT SEA 1180 – 1 Project SEA 1180-1 Offshore Patrol Vessel provides
the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) the opportunity to
significantly step up in capability for its offshore patrol
vessel (OPV) requirements.
The future OPV will be one which is capable of
operating multiple mission types, either as part of a
task group or independently, with minimum crew and
far better sustainment performance than previously.
There is an improved integration capability with
existing major and minor fleet units from this platform
and an ability to use the OPV as a mine warfare and
hydrographic survey platform in the future.

CONCEPTUAL OVERVIEW
At full operational capability Ship Zero will have the following major facilities:
n Land Based Test Site (LBTS) as an evaluation and test centre that is reconfigurable,
allowing for system architecture re-engineering;
n Advanced Simulator Facilities for individual and collective training aiming to
maximize the effectiveness of training ashore to minimize training in OPVs at sea;
n Auditorium and Meeting Spaces allowing the RAN to conduct adaptable mission
specific and general briefing and debriefing meetings;
n Remote Monitoring and Condition Based Maintenance facilities assuring the
maximum availability of OPVs for operations; and
n Virtual and Augmented Reality facilities for design review and training courses
aiming to maximize the effectiveness of training ashore.
REMOTE MONITORING AND
CONDITION BASED MAINTENANCE
Remote monitoring and Condition Based maintenance are the future of fleet
sustainment. Ship Zero will include high-end and state of the art capabilities
for Remote Monitoring and Condition Based maintenance.
This functionality will contribute to increasing the effectiveness of operations
and availability of the ships.
By making use of existing secured data transfer capabilities of the OPVs,
real time data can be safely transferred to the control room at Ship Zero
and the Asset Management & Planning System of the RAN.
The system will be based on future-proofed software driven solutions and
will include real time monitoring of:
n ship’s data (alarms, temperatures, pressures);
n ship’s operations (position, speed, weather);
n planned maintenance activities; and
n condition based maintenance activities.
Audio visual remote support through satellite connection will be available
enabling the crew to execute error analysis and fault finding when at sea.
THE FUTURE
OF TRAINING SHIP ZERO
ADVANCED FULL MISSION SIMULATION
Ship Zero will have a state of the art simulator for combined Bridge, OPSROOM and
Platform training, used for individual, team and collective training, procedures and
management. It may also be used, next to the Land Based Site Tests, for modelling
future modifications to the OPV capability.
The simulator will maximize the effectiveness of training ashore to minimize training in
OPVs at sea, thereby increasing the availability of OPVs for operations. Real life exercises,
mission specific procedures and high-level team and collective training can be conducted
in a highly realistic environment. The simulator will ensure a realistic training environment,
thus resulting in safe training and risk reduction.
By combining the Bridge, OPSROOM and Damage Control and Integrated Platform
Management System the entire key-staff of the OPVs can be prepared for missions
simultaneously as a single fully integrated command team reflecting the integrated
delivery of the bridge and ops room to create a lean, mean, fighting machine – the
Damen OPV. The RHIB’s can be included in the simulator, enabling the RAN to train
extensively on all primary mission operations and reduce risks in operations.
VIRTUAL AND AUGMENTED REALITY
Computer Based Training, Virtual and Augmented Reality represent the future of
training and have to be part of Ship Zero. It saves costs on equipment hardware
and reduces travel costs of the crew significantly.
The facilities will be used for :
n visualising and clarifying designs and lay-outs during the detailed design review
between Damen and the Commonwealth;
n advanced internal and external ship experience and familiarisation, both for crew
and support teams;
n individual training and handling experience of specific electronic and platform
equipment;
n highly realistic and state of the art Damage Control, Safety and Emergency training;
n supporting team training and team awareness in Ship and RHIB handling;
n maintenance training.
Virtual and Augmented Reality facilities shall be made available at the main support
base “Ship Zero” and support bases. Furthermore it can be made available at any
other RAN or Commonwealth approved location. This will enable crew to participate
in highly realistic training courses at any location.
