FROM THE CLUB PRESIDENT IN THIS ISSUE

Jeff Mapstone President and GM Messages 2

Summertime is here and Mother Nature is shining down upon us. Everywhere we look we Membership 3
are seeing signs of our vibrant Club. Let me share some of them with you.
Pro Shop 4
Club activity: membership usage is at an all time high. The House Committee has planned
many exciting events throughout the summer. Thistle Hall and the pool are a magnet for Women’s Golf Association 5
families and the golf course and courts are full.
Golf Instruction 6-7
Member involvement: your board is finishing work in filling committee positions and we
are seeing many new faces wanting to be involved in the important work of guiding our Thistle Fitness 7
Club for the future. Robust member engagement is always a great sign.
Tennis and Aquatics 8
Membership growth: as we know, new members are the lifeblood of any organization.
Membership for our new year is off to a record breaking start. In the first four months, Grounds & Greens 9
we have welcomed 13 new members to our CCR family. We have something special that
people want to be part of and our members are reaching out to their family and friends Club Life 10-12

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Mike Smith, CCM, CCE

TRADITION by definition, is the transmission of customs or beliefs from generation to generation, or the fact of being passed
on in this way.

This time of year is a great time for us to recognize and embrace our CCR traditions, as we have just finished an all-around
fantastic men’s golf tournament—our 91st Annual Invitation. We have also recently held well-attended Men’s and Women’s
Guest Days, seen active weekends at the pool and enjoyed another amazing display of fireworks and family fun during our
Annual Fireworks event. We have a number of social events planned this summer; occasions we hope become annual family
traditions in the years ahead!

Walking around our Club’s property each day, I’m constantly reminded of just how deeply rooted in tradition our Club is; our
rich heritage is one of the defining qualities within our CCR community and is also an important part of our Club’s reputation
throughout Rochester and beyond.

Recently our Club was approached by the USGA with the opportunity to host a future US Senior Women’s Open. This also
happens to be the inaugural year this is taking place. It will be held in mid-July at Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton, Illinois.
Because of our Club’s long-standing history with the USGA and our involvement in the very first Women’s Open, the 1962 US
Women Amateur Championship and the 1973 US Women’s Open, we have been asked to attend this year’s tournament. It is
our goal during this time in Chicago to gather all facts and have a complete understanding of how this tournament operates
and how it impacts the Club and its membership. No decisions have been made at this time and we will share our findings once
we have more information.

You will find some of the best golf played all season, during this month’s Mens, Women’s, Senior and Junior Championships. As
you continue to enjoy your time at the Club this summer, it is my hope that you will also embrace the traditions that have made
our Club the special place that it is!

Dear Members, 91st Annual Invitation Tournament
June 7-9, 2018
It was nice to see June bring us better weather and a busier
month on the golf course. Our 91st Invitation Tournament 2018 Champion, Christian Chapman
saw three beautiful days and proved to be another successful with Tournament Chair, Blake Gianniny
event. Seventy-nine players competed in the scratch field
and CCR was well represented with Jack and Danny Gianniny Overall Member-Guest Champions,
both making the Championship Flight. Christian Chapman, Member, Paul Sawicki and
a Victor High School graduate who is now playing for his guest, Vern Loveless
University of Delaware, played some great golf on the path CHEF’S FUN FOOD FACT
to becoming the 2018 Champion. On the Member-Guest
side, Paul Sawicki and his partner, Vern Loveless made a Food consumed on the course during this year’s Invitation:
birdie on the first hole of the Flight Shootout to become the ~ 4500 Finger Sandwiches ~ 100lbs Chicken Salad ~
Overall Member-Guest Champions. ~ 60lbs Ham Salad ~ 45lbs Tuna Salad ~
~ 450 Eggs Worth of Egg Salad ~
Our Women’s Guest Day on June 12th brought in a nice field ~ 60lbs Italian Sausage ~ 220 Red & White Hots ~
and I would like to recognize the following winners:
Low Net Team— Diane Dugan, Margaret Dugan,

Nancy Whiting and Kara Christensen
Low Gross Team—Sue Davin, Jennie Ryan,

Holly Geary and Caroline Ryan

Registration for our Member-Guest Better Ball, August 2–4,
is off to a great start! This is certainly one of the highlight
golf events of our season and a fantastic opportunity to
entertain and showcase what a great Club we have! The field
is filling quickly, so if you are interested in playing, please
turn in your entry card or call the golf shop ASAP!

A couple of quick reminders going forward into July. We
have noticed a high volume of balls being used on the
Brookside holes, which unfortunately leads to our mowers
chopping up the balls and risking damage to their blades.
We ask that you please keep these balls for use on the
driving range and chipping greens only! Also, please
remember that the forecaddie policy is in effect. Any group
who has three guests is required to notify the golf shop in
advance to arrange a forecaddie. Any group that does not
call in advance and does not reserve a forecaddie, will still
be charged the forecaddie fee.

We look forward to many more sunny days in July and hope
to see you on the golf course!

All the best,
~ Michael

Peggy Boucher, WGA Chair June 12, 2018

“I just love hanging out with good people on a great, fun golf course.” Mary Collins and Peggy Boucher with guests

The above quote reminds me of women’s golf, right here at CCR. We
have so many options between Tuesday 9 & Dine, Wednesday 18-hole
and 9-hole play, casual play all week long and inviting our friends to
join us to participate in our Women’s Guest Days!

Special thanks to Linda Mapstone and Melanie Pangilinan, for once
again co-chairing our 18-hole guest day on June 12th. It was a perfect
day as we donned our “Pretty in Pink” golf attire.

June 20th was our annual Memorial Tournament. Congratulations to
18-hole winners: Leslie Huey and Julie Odenbach with a 61, and 9- hole
winners: Linda Buttrill and Susan Gillan with a 27.

9 & Dine is in full swing. Our July schedule includes these fun themes: Kim Szczublewski and guests

We also have fun events planned for the ladies on Wednesday mornings Kathleen Hersam and guests
this month. Our signature 9-hole Guest Day is July 11th, with a 9:30 am 18-hole Guest Day Chairs, Melanie Pangilinan, Linda
shotgun start, followed by lunch. Our Tea PAR-ty theme is sure to be a Mapstone and their guests toast to golf and friends!
lovely day for all! The following week on July 18th, is Staff Appreciation

GROUNDS & GREENS

Rick Holfoth, CGCS | Golf Course Superintendent
[email protected] |585-381-1844

A brief glimpse inside the mind of our Horticulturalist, Michael
Lannon. If you ask him, he’ll explain that there’s a “method to
his madness.” His well thought-out process to planting and
grooming our gardens is a visual canvas of color, texture and
beauty throughout CCR!

CCR IN BLOOM

Michael Lannon, Head Horticulturalist

Main Entrance
I drove around to various clubs in the area and took note of what
they were doing for plantings; lots of flowers are used. My goal
was too make CCR stand out, yet remain subtle and elegant.
Shades of green with white as an accent was my decision;
different leaf shapes and shades of green make the display
interesting. I understand this color scheme isn't for everyone;
my objective was to do "something no other club is doing.”
CCR is a special place and the plantings around the Club should
reflect that.

Honor Grove
Thank you to the members who have noticed the subtle changes
to Honor Grove. This area is a "work in progress.” I have been
slowly incorporating more texture and color to this area. Some
plantings in this area have exceeded their boundaries, so "reeling
them back in" is necessary. My goal is to make this a real point of
interest for anyone on their way to the golf course.

Pool Area
There are some new additions around the pool area; stop by
and check out the Florida-inspired planters. I kept flowers to a
minimum and used foliage to create interest and color. Bees are
an issue at times around the pool, so I used flowers minimally,
keeping that in mind.

Back Terrace Planters
Notice the use of foliage to add interest; colors are neutral—so as
to work with any event taking place on the terrace. Flowers are
not the focus, as bees are an issue in this area as well. As the
plants mature, you will notice these plants will change.

Tennis Hut
A shout-out to Ladies Tennis members for the rave reviews on
the planters at the tennis hut, Lots of variety and color in these
planters make the area festive for tennis events. Many thanks for
noticing!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for
making me feel welcome here at the
Club, appreciating and noticing my work,
giving feedback and compliments and
providing fun, laughter and conversation.
It is nice seeing so many familiar faces.
Please feel free to stop and say hello
when you see me!

~ Michael
