PRESIDENT DR. REUBEN SUNIL KUMAR SHARMA M A Z M MALAYSIAN ASSOCIATION OF ZOOLOGICAL MEDICINE It gives me great pleasure in welcoming you to the 2nd Annual Scientific Conference 2024 of the Malaysian Association of Zoological Medicine (MAZM). The theme of the conference, “One Health in Zoological Medicine”, is in line with the current challenges we encounter in Malaysia and all over the world, due to changes in the environment and alterations in the dynamics of zoonotic disease transmission and epidemiology. We are privileged to have five very prominent speakers who are experts in the various aspects of zoological medicine, and I thank them for their invaluable contribution. It is envisaged that this conference will be an avenue for the exchange of ideas, networking, and creating awareness on the advances and challenges faced in the field of zoological medicine in Malaysia and regionally. The Malaysian Association of Zoological Medicine is proud to be a vibrant association, with members from various specializations actively involved in the myriad of disciplines embodied in the field of zoological medicine. Our role in ‘One Health’ is timely and of utmost importance to the nation. MAZM will endeavour to promote and advance zoological medicine, and ensure that we remain a relevant and dedicated Association. On behalf of MAZM, I thank our sponsors Wholistic Ventures Sdn. I also extend a heartfelt thanks to the Executive Council members for their exceptional dedication and invaluable contribution in ensuring the success of the Association and the Annual Conference. WELCOMING ADDRESS PROGRAM CHAIRMAN DR. KOK MUN KEONG On behalf of the organizing committee, it is our great pleasure to welcome everyone to the 2nd Malaysian Association of Zoological Medicine (MAZM) Scientific Seminar, on June 6th, 2024, at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universiti Putra Malaysia. This year's conference theme, “One Health in Zoological Medicine,” emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach to addressing the challenges in improving the health and conservation of free-living and managed wildlife. Adhering to the One Health concept, our committee has gathered esteemed speakers from various fields of expertise, including wildlife conservation, zoonoses, zoo management, animal welfare, and wildlife captive breeding. I hope this conference will serve as a platform for our colleagues to gain new insights into zoological medicine, discuss ideas, and explore new opportunities for collaboration. I would like to extend my gratitude to our speakers, sponsor, and the organizing team for their hard work and dedication in making this event possible. I also thank all colleagues who have taken the time to attend this scientific conference. We look forward to your continuous support of MAZM and our upcoming CPD programs.

PROGRAMME


SPEAKERS DR. ZAINAL ZAHARI ZAINUDDIN Dr. Zainal Zahari Zainuddin started off towards being an accountant, but switched to veterinary medicine, joining the Department of Wildlife and National Parks, Peninsular Malaysia in 1985. Since then, he has developed expertise in surveying, capture, translocation, husbandry and breeding of Malayan tiger, elephant, Hairy rhinoceros, Malayan seladang, Malay tapir and Bornean banteng. After the death of the last rhinos in Malaysia, due to age-related pathologies, he has directed his efforts into developing expertise in the breeding of native plants, with an emphasis on the genus Ficus. Together with BORA staff at Tabin Wildlife Reserve, he established the Sabah Ficus Germplasm Centre which is an invaluable resource for the restoration of natural forest in Sabah.


ASSOC. PROF. DR. SANDIE CHOONG SIEW SHEAN Dr. Sandie Choong Siew Shean graduated with a degree in Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in 2000. She then proceeded to complete her Master’s in Veterinary Science degree in 2002 (UPM) followed by her PhD from the University of Nottingham(2016). Dr Sandie has over two decades of experience in zoo and wildlife animal medicine. She began her professional veterinary career at Taiping Zoo and Night Safari, and later joined the Department of Wildlife and National Parks Head Quarters and the Melaka Zoo. Currently, Dr Sandie is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universiti Malaysia Kelantan. At the same time, she holds the Deputy Dean for Academic position, focusing on the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine curriculum teaching and learning to ensure the standard quality of UMK’s graduates, also postgraduate academic performances. She has coordinated clinical practices courses as well as train student in medicine and surgery for wildlife and exotic animals.


DR. KEVIN LAZARUS Dr. Kevin Lazarus started his career as a as veterinarian at Zoo Taiping from 1987 till 1994 and later as a Director till 5th June 2022 after graduation from UPM. Throughout his 35 year tenure he was actively involved in the redevelopment of Taiping Zoo and Night Safari which includes developing the zoo masterplan layout, enclosure design, marketing, education, landscape (botanical trail), human resource, organizational structure ,lighting system, signages, visitor flow etc. He is an active member on numerous professional bodies, namely as the current chairman of Malaysian Association of Zoological Parks and Aquaria (MAZPA) and Vice President of South East Asian Zoos Association (SEAZA) expansively contributing to wildlife not only within Malaysia but across the Asian continent. Due to his profound impact,Dr Kevin has received Perak State Tourism Award in 2013 and other numerous awards such as the PMP – Paduka Mahkota Perak (Higher recognition, Royal Crown of Perak), AMP – Ahli Mahkota Perak ( Member of the Royal Crown of Perak), BKM - Bintang Kebaktian Masyarakat, Kedah (Service to Society Medal) and PPT – Pingat Pekerti Terpilih, Perak (Service Medal).


DR. SUMITA SUGNASEELAN Dr. Sumita Sugnaseelan obtained her undergraduate degree in Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in 2000. She was conferred Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Animal Welfare from the University of Cambridge, UK in 2006. Her field of specialisation are Ethology and Animal Welfare, and Stress Physiology. She is currently attached to the Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture UPM as an academic member of staff and is also a Research Associate at the Centre of Excellence of Wildlife Research and Conservation UPM. Her research interests are behavioural and physiological approaches to assessing welfare, cognition, and sensory perception in both wild as well as domestic animals.


DR DONNY YAWAH Dr. Donny Yawah began his career as a Veterinary Officer and lecturer at the Veterinary Institute of Malaysia (DVS). In 2012 he became the Veterinary Officer in Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) where he currently sits as the Chief of Wildlife Veterinary division. His field of expertise includes Malayan tapir conservation focusing in comprehensive captive management, including their diet, health, breeding, husbandry, and translocation. He is an integral member of the Malayan Tapir Conservation Action Plan (MATCAP) committee as well as dedicated member of the Wildlife Reproductive Biotechnology Programme (WRBP) where he is deeply involved in the reproductive status evaluation and gamete collection of various mammalian wild species since 2017. His current role includes actively contributing to the development of wildlife reproductive manuals and guidelines, as well as engaging in tapir research initiatives focused on the breeding of wild species.
