Requirements for production

1Requirements of production

Requirements of production

Types of moving image productions

1. In December of last year we created short video to show off our videography and editing
skills. We did this in the same format as the depict competition (www.depict.org/watch-
films), the only major rule is that the video must be around 90 seconds (give or take
10 seconds). If we were to submit our video we’d email the link to Depict directly.

2. There are many different types of videos. For example movies are some of the most popular
types. A movie normally follows a linear narrative that is written. However in this style of
moving image production there are different types/genres. A genre is a thematic category
which often follow the same aesthetics and narrative types. For example, genres can be
vastly different. Like a horror is usually meant to scare the viewer, whereas a comedy is
meant to make the viewer laugh. Music videos are another common form of moving image
production, it is simply a video made to fit the theme and narrative of a song.
Advertisements are used to promote a product or service. For example The first Nike air
Jordan commercial (AIR JORDAN 1 COMMERCIAL: Banned! (1985) - YouTube ) caused the
product to sell out everywhere instantly. A very popular series of corporate videos are apple
releases. A more recent example of this is the new iMac announcements
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4X_IW3kqr3k). it shows of all of the features in an
easy to follow simply presentation. Apple do this for every major release they make
(iPhones, macs, etc). A common method of distribution for advertisements are through the
TV channels. An advert is played in the breaks of popular shows, the more popular the show
the more people will see, due to this commercial TV channels charge for different time slots.
For the super-bowl In 2019 it cost 5.25 million dollars for a 30 second ad. As a result of this
98.2 million people would see it. Pepsi purchased a 60 second time slot airing their video
(https://www.youtube.com/wach?v=OxTxoz0_rmM), this video generated them 385 million
dollars. Movies are distributed commonly through DVDs sold at any store, but before they
hit stores a lot of movies are premiered in cinemas but due to COVID-19 they are using
streaming platforms such as Disney plus to air. The movie ‘Rango’ (2011) was originally
viewed across the entire world in cinema but due to the later DVD releases it made 245
million dollars.

Finance and sources of funding

3. Equity means a project is being funded entirely from a single investor / a group of investors
(commonly from colleagues / family). The investor often wants to get a 20%+ return on their
original investment. Another way is crowd funding a film. You find a large amount of people
(usually on the internet) that’re interested in your idea and they chip in to try and get the
idea of the ground. An example of this is ‘Veronica Mars’ (2014). The budget was 6 million
dollars. It only made 3.5 million back. Self funding is also a very common way film makers
afford their movies. ‘The Blair Witch Project’ (1999) was self funded with 60 thousand
dollars. It made 250 million dollars after its original theatrical release.

What will the money be spent on?

- Script

- actors

- set construction

- special effects / editing

- fashion design

- marketing

- advertisements

- promotions

Requirements for any production

4. In our video we had to collect equipment like cameras, tripods, lighting, etc. We used the
same camera and equipment for the entire shoot so we got very familiar with the uses and
how it’s all used. For our depict video we only used 1 prop which was my water bottle which
I brought with me just naturally so there was no forgetting or any problems like that.
However at the end of every shoot we had to format the SD card, due to this we had to save
all of the footage in pieces other than all in one.

Personnel

A. With a small budget film there is always a very small amount of workers. These workers instead
of having one main job they must do a few jobs. For example, the camera man may also be in
control of the audio and the lighting. The script writer might oversee direction.

B. With TV programmes such as news shows there is a large scale production. A large amount of
researchers are used to fact check all of the stories and to write them all out. A ton of different
cameras are used to show the news reader.

C.

5. In the group I worked I acted in the footage. I also edited the video. Where as the camera man
was in control of the audio. We all did the pre-production paperwork spread across each 3 people. I
did the location recce, talent releases and the risk assessment. In the group we spread the work
evenly so there wouldn’t be any one working harder than the others.

6. we didn’t have anyone outside of the group working on the project.

7. in the media industry (film, Music, etc) if you do not meet the deadline you and the team simply
get let go. with this in mind, our group met all of the deadlines given to us because we knew how
serious it could end.

8. equipment is expensive. So a way around spending the full price, media companies often rent out
equipment like cameras, lighting and microphones because renting is much more cost effective. This
RED DSMC2 (DSMC2 BRAIN (red.com)) is over 50 thousand dollars, but for a 7 day rental is only
$1179. Renting is most common in low budget films. The closest place near me (which I could find)
that provides this service is in London (https://subscription.weido.com). Most of the cameras are
fully unavailable for booking due to the demand. The most expensive camera to rent I can see is the
‘SONY PXW-FX9’ (https://subscription.wedio.com/collections/camera/products/sony-pxw-fx9). The
price of this camera is around 10 thousand pounds, but renting it every money is only 600 pounds.

9. thankfully at our college we were able to just borrow the equipment that we needed. We have to
book the day before we collect it. We borrowed a standard cannon DSLR, these cameras are very
common in low budget film making. We also just took out a standard tripod for all of our still shots.

10 / 11. A location recce is used to show all of the information of where the production is being
recorded. It shows the address, phone number of the place, emergency contacts, etc. A location
release is signed by someone who partly owns the land to show permission you can record there.
For our production we recorded it in my college so we had a large area to choose from. We recorded
basically the entire video on 1 set of stairs so it was very easy to do.

12. We didn’t run into any issues with any of the pre-production paper work

Legal issues

15. when making a production you need to ensure you have the rights. For the music of our
production we made sure to use Bensound. Bensound has a real range of copy right free music you
can use without charge. During the production we needed to have permission from the actors, we
did this using talent releases, this shows all their relevant information. They have to sign at the
bottom to confirm they have given their consent to be in the video.

16. copy right protects the original content create. Someone makes a product and when it’s protect
no one else can use it without their permission. This act protects them against people stealing their
work. You need to also know, after 50 years of your content being copy righted it will expire. This
means other people can use the content without your permission after this amount of time.

17. in our production copy right didn’t really affect us. We couldn’t use the music we wanted so we
were forced to use the limited amount of bad music on Bensound, which limited our production and
creative ideas.

18.

Clearance – you have permission to use the content, either by the original creator the rights owner.

Public liability insurance –

Completion guarantee / insurance – used to guarantee that the work will be completed.

Regulation:

19. Ofcom (office of communications) is a company supervising the communications industry. They
oversee different companies to make sure the customers are being treated correctly, they also
protect people from getting scammed from bad practices which the elderly are vulnerable to. They
also control the television, they put things on that will fit a certain target audience. Ofcom was
actually made by the united kingdom government.

20. The BBC (British Broadcasting Centre) is regulated by the OFT (Office of Fair Trading). This is
because the BBC is the only government-run TV channel.

21. The BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) is a non-government run organisation. It is entirely
responsible for the censorship of certain films shown in cinemas and TV channels. They also control
advertisements shown to protect The viewer form seeing something offense they don’t want to see.
