Swimming in Summer

It was early summer day, and the weather was really hot. Asim
wanted to go to river for swimming. His mom told, "We will go
to river on Saturday." Asim was very happy. Asim had taken
swimming classes in his school.

Saturday came. It was
a sunny day. Asim was
very excited about
going to river. His dad
had a work. He did not
go with him. Asim and
mom went. Mom told
they would spend the
whole day swimming,
playing and eating. She had cooked selroti, puri and achar. She had
also taken some bananas. She bought some chocolates, noodles
and biscuits on the way.

Finally, they reached to
the river. Mom found a
good spot to sit on. She
had taken a mat from
home. They sat on it.
There was another boy
sitting near to them. The

with sand. They made a big sandcastle.
They swam across the river. Asim was

became cloudy. Asim's mom told, "It
will rain. We have to go back."

Strong wind blew. All the people there
began to
run. Asim
and his
mother also ran towards home.

It began to rain. They were wet in
the rain. When they reached home,
Asim felt cold. Mom made hot tea
for him.

The Queen’s Handkerchief

[The lesson tells a “feel good” story about a little girl who receives a gift of handkerchief
from the Queen. While teaching this story, teachers may ask students about the kinds
of gifts they receive on special occasions such as birthdays, public festivals, and family
visits. This will help to set the tone for the story. The story also allows teachers to present
structures to describe current activities.]

This is Ann. She is a little girl. Ann's house
is in a village. Ann's mother and father
have a shop. This is Ann's brother.

His name is Rob. It is early morning. The
sky is blue and the sun is shining. The
birds are singing. People are working.

Look! A man is coming. He is riding a
brown horse. The people are looking at the man.

"Who is he?" says Ann. "He is the
Queen's man," says her father.

"Look," says Ann. "He is putting
a notice on the road." Father is
reading the notice. "Listen," he says.
"The Queen is coming to the village.
She is coming this afternoon." The
children are shouting and clapping.
"Queen Ann is coming to the village."

It is nine o'clock now.The people are cleaning the village. The

men are trimming plants. The women are sweeping the floors.
The teacher is writing a new song.

Two hours later, the women are making cakes and bread. The
children are singing. It is two o'clock. The people are waiting for
the queen. The teacher is giving flowers to Ann. "Ann," she says,
"Give these flowers to the Queen after she has arrived."

The Queen
arrives. She is
riding a white
horse. There are
five men behind
the Queen. They
are riding black
horses.

The children are singing. The women are throwing flowers in
front of the Queen.

"Go, Ann." says Dick. "Give the flowers to the queen." Ann is
giving flowers to the Queen. The Queen is smelling the flowers.

"What is your name?" says the Queen.
"My name is Ann," says the little girl.

The Queen is smiling. She is giving a
handkerchief to Ann. "Look at this,"
says the Queen. "This is my name.
It is your name, too, so it is your
handkerchief."

How Mrs. Fox Married Again

[This animal story humorously dramatizes how a widow remarries a
young suitor. Such stories resonate with children’s sense of culture.]
When old Mr. Fox died, there came a wolf to woo Mrs. Fox. He
knocked at the door, and the cat opened to him. He made her a
bow and said; "Good day, Miss Cat, so brisk and gay,

How is it that alone you stay?
And what is it you cook today?‘‘
The cat answered,
"Bread so white, and milk so sweet,
Will it please you to sit and eat?"
"Thank you very much, Miss Cat,"

132 New Nepal English Reader-2 Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur

answered the wolf, "but is Mrs. Fox at home?"
Then the cat said,
"She is sitting upstairs in her grief.
And her eyes with her weeping are sore,
From her sorrow she gets no relief,
Now poor old Mr. Fox is no more!"
The wolf answered,
"Won't she take another spouse,
To protect her and her house?"
Up went the cat, pit-a-pat, pit-a-pat.
She knocked at the door rat-a-tat, rat-a-tat.
"Mrs. Fox, are you there?"
"Yes, yes, pussy dear!"
"There's a
suitor below.
Shall I tell
him to go?"

But Mrs. Fox
asked, “Has
the gentleman
red breeches
and a sharp
nose?”

“No,” answered the cat.

“Then I won’t have him for a husband,” said Mrs. Fox.

After the wolf was sent away, there came a dog, a stag, a hare,
a bear, a lion, and several other wild animals. But all of them
lacked the good qualities that late Mr. Fox had so that the cat had
to send them all away. At last came a young fox. And Mrs. Fox
asked whether he had red breeches and a sharp nose.

“Yes, he has,” said the cat.

“Then I will have him,” said Mrs. Fox, and bade the cat make
ready the wedding feast.

“Now, cat, sweep the
parlours

And open the window,

Then if you have a fancy

For anything nice,

Just manage to catch

For yourself a few mice

Youmayeatthemalone,

I do not want one.”

So, she was married to young Master Fox, with much dancing
and rejoicing. Maybe they are still dancing.

His mother would yell and his father would shout but Assad did
not listen to them at all!

His grades at school slipped gradually as he did not do his home
assignments on time. He was poor at running and playing all
kinds of sports for he never practiced any. All he did was sit on
the old sofa and watch TV.

Finally, it was test week at school. Assad failed in his tests and
could not be promoted to the next grade. All his friends and
neighbours laughed at him.

After that, Assad promised himself that he will now not waste
time watching TV. He will first finish his work and play before
watching TV.
