2022 Annual Report Empowering thoughtful Christian leaders for the global church and the complex world

What a difference a year makes! Northwestern began winter quarter 2022 in quarantine with UCM programming on Zoom. This year, we started with an in- person worship service and home-cooked dinner. Monthly meals are part of our regular routine again and holidays offer opportunities for special celebrations (pumpkin carving, Thanksgiving turkey and trimmings, Christmas cookie decorating). We continued to build community through “question of the day” and breakout conversations during worship. We offered students opportunities to get off campus for meals or hiking. Spiritual practices included a campus labyrinth walk, an in-person beach Easter sunrise service, and our first off-campus retreat since 2019! Our commitment to social justice continues through mutual aid distribution to NU food service workers (with Students Organizing for Labor Rights) and refugees from Afghanistan (with Stock the Shelves). UCM is supporting NU Graduate Student workers in their campaign to unionize. We deepened our commitment to environmental justice by establishing a community composting bin. We raised our voices in song on our 2nd Annual Gospel Music Night with Professor Kent Brooks. A highlight of our year was hosting Ms. Penny Cost, the first drag queen candidate for ordination in the United Methodist Church. The circumstances of ministry are always changing, but UCM’s mission never does: to empower thoughtful Christian leaders for the global church and the complex world. We strive to bring light to the darkness and proclaim hope for a hurting world. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your vision, encouragement and support; your collaboration is everything to us! Yours in Christ, From the Campus Minister “UCM has given me the confidence and skills to be a leader of faith in the wider world.”
