2020 Annual Report

University Christian Ministry

Director’s Message Campus Ministry in the Time of
COVID and Black Lives Matter
For all of us, 2020 has been a year like no other. Since UCM
began in 1939, there have undoubtedly been difficult periods in • Providing safe and healthy housing for international/low
history. However, never before has UCM done ministry in the income/first generation/BIPOC students
midst of a divisive election season, significant racial reckoning
and a global pandemic all at the same time! • Supplying groceries and over the counter medications
• Overhauling student leadership team to create virtual
  engagement
In the twelve short months since • Shifting worship and fellowship exclusively online
our last report, everything about • Building Christian community asynchronously
campus ministry has been • Marching for Black lives
turned upside down. We have • Sponsoring speakers on racial justice
invented and reinvented, tried . …essentially reinventing every aspect of ministry (like churches
new things and failed,
experimented and succeeded. everywhere!)
And while there have been
numerous challenges and 2020 by the Numbers
moments of lament, we are also
deeply grateful.  • 247 fi rst year students contacted
  • 90 miles walked on outdoor, masked pastoral care walks
During this time of social distancing, we have been drawn • 41 weeks (and counting!) of online programming
spiritually together. In March, students quickly scattered from • 24 virtual worship services
campus to places all over the US. Since then, we have had folks • 12 students attended in person January retreat
from New Jersey, Wyoming and California, Canada, Kenya and • 8 pumpkins carved for our virtual pumpkin carving
South Korea join us for worship, prayer and fellowship. UCM has • 4 students received safe & healthy housing
been a constant reminder that we are never alone, always • Countless hours on Zoom
surrounded by the love of God and our campus ministry
community, no matter where you are.

As we begin the new year, we are building on everything we
have learned until now. And without a doubt, we step into the
unknown believing that God’s promises are trustworthy and
true. We could not have come this far without the financial
support and prayers of each and every one of you.  From the
bottom of our hearts, thank you for all you have done as our
partners in ministry.

Yours in Christ,

Julie Windsor Mitchell

How UCM Has Helped Students During the Pandemic

• UCM has been a great way to stay connected to my peers and my
faith throughout the pandemic. --senior, off campus in Evanston

• Knowing that UCM would continue to have (virtual) worship each
week as well as check-ins throughout the week has been a calming
presence during a time of chaos and upheaval in my everyday life.
--junior, off campus in Evanston

• Since I was forced to leave campus in March, UCM has helped me
stay grounded in hopeful thoughts and community.  --sophomore,
off campus at family home in Chicagoland

• Even when everything seemed like it was going wrong, UCM has
comforted me in the present and helped me feel hopeful about
the future. --freshman, at home fall quarter and on campus winter
quarter
