Wai Khru Ceremony
At the beginning of every school year in Thailand,
Thai students participate in the Wai Khru Ceremony or
Teachers’ Respect Day. Wai Khru Day is held shortly after the
beginning of the academic year on a Thursday,
as Thursday is traditionally believed as
the day of wisdom and knowledge.
Wai Khru is the day of the year when
Thai students show their utmost respect to their teachers by
participating in a school ceremony. During the ceremony,
they thank their teachers for the gift of knowledge and the gift of learning
that they have given them. The students also wish
their teachers good luck for the coming school year and other endeavors.
On Wai Khru Day in Thailand, students come to school with flowers or
gifts for their teachers. In most Thai schools,
especially the government schools,
students make their own floral arrangements.
Traditional Thai flowers and plants, including banana leaves are usually
used. Incense in large arrangements are also given
all of which have different meanings.
Lxora flowers (Santan)
symbolize mental
sharpness or intelligence.
Bermuda grass represents
determination and the eagerness to learn.
Popped rice means discipline.
Eggplant flowers means respect and humility.
