Bonsai Kit

Bonsai Kit

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS

STEP BY STEP

Pre Planting - Strati cation: The rst stage of the process is
to wake the seeds from their dormant states. in order for the
seeds to come out of their dormant state they must be
placed in conditions replicating winter - this can be
achieved by placing them in a refrigerator overnight.

Pre Planting - Submergence: The seeds in this kit have been
harvested from temperature tree species and selected
because they can be harvested at any time of the year - it
is advisable to soak the seeds in water overnight prior to
planting.

Planting - Preparation of the Pot: Now you are ready to sow
the seeds, Submerge a compost disc into a bowl of water
and allow it to expand to around six times its original size.
Squeeze out any excess water from the disk, Break apart the
disk and place into one of the pots provided. Save enough
compost to create a layer of compost to the size of around
three seeds

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS

STEP BY STEP

Planting - Sow the seed: Sow the seeds thinly and cover
with the compost that you saved in the previous step

Propagation of the Seed - Perforate the plastic bags to
allow air in and out, Place one pot into each bag and put
them into a cool light place (13 - 16C) be sure to place out
of direct sunlight for 2-3 weeks. After this period place
them in a refrigerator for 4-6 weeks.

Germination - Remove the pots from the refrigerator after
the propagation period is complete-and keep in a warm
place (again avoid direct sunlight) Ensure the compost
remains moist but not too wet. After the seeds have
germinated remove the plastic bag, then let the seedlings
strengthen before transplanting them in to a 10cm pot.

CARING FOR YOUR BONSAI

TOP TIPS

Pruning - Using the small pruning tool from the kit to
strategically trim o the buds, leaves or branches to
shape the tree to your desired shape. Early Spring is the
best time to prune your Bonsai and trim any new growth in
the summer to maintain the desired shape and size

Watering - The most important point to remember is not to
over water the plants, Check the soil daily to ensure it is
moist. Fertilise regularly except in period of dormancy.

Re-Potting - Your Bonsai Trees need re-potting when they
become pot bound. The majority of trees need re-potting
in early spring just as they come out of dormancy and new
growth starts to appear.

Root Pruning - You will need to inspect the roots of your
Bonsai and pruned if necessary to produce a small dense
root ball. The process of root pruning and removing one
third of the roots each year enables new soil to be added
to the pot and enables new roots to grow.

A LITTLE ABOUT BONSAI

A GREAT HISTORY

Bonsai is a Japanese art form using cultivation techniques
to produce, in containers, small trees that mimic the shape
and scale of full size trees. Similar practices exist in other

cultures, including the Chinese tradition of penzai or
penjing from which the art originated, and the miniature
living landscapes of Vietnamese The Japanese tradition

dates back over a thousand years.

The Japanese loanword "bonsai" has become an umbrella
term in English, attached to many forms of potted or other
plants, and also on occasion to other living and non-living
things. According to Stephen Orr in The New York Times,
"the term should be reserved for plants that are grown in
shallow containers following the precise tenets of bonsai
pruning and training, resulting in an artful miniature replica
of a full-grown tree in nature, In the most restrictive sense,
"bonsai" refers to miniaturized, container-grown trees
adhering to Japanese tradition and principles.

Purposes of bonsai are primarily contemplation for the
viewer, and the pleasant exercise of e ort and ingenuity for
the grower.

A bonsai is created beginning with a specimen of source
material. This may be a cutting, seedling, or small tree of a
species suitable for bonsai development. Bonsai can be
created from nearly any perennial woody-stemmed tree or
shrub species that produces true branches and can be
cultivated to remain small through pot con nement with
crown and root pruning.

The source specimen is shaped to be relatively small and to
meet the aesthetic standards of bonsai. When the candidate
bonsai nears its planned nal size it is planted in a display
pot, usually one designed for bonsai display in one of a few
accepted shapes and proportions. From that point forward,
its growth is restricted by the pot environment. Throughout
the year, the bonsai is shaped to limit growth, redistribute
foliar vigour to areas requiring further development, and
meet the artist's detailed design.

The practice of bonsai is sometimes confused with dwar ng,
but dwar ng generally refers to research, discovery, or
creation of plants that are permanent, genetic miniatures of
existing species. Plant dwar ng often uses selective
breeding or genetic engineering to create dwarf cultivars.
Bonsai does not require genetically dwarfed trees, but
rather depends on growing small trees from regular stock
and seeds. Bonsai uses cultivation techniques like pruning,
root reduction, potting, defoliation, and grafting to produce
small trees that mimic the shape and style of mature,
full-size trees.
