COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
CLO 1
By successfully completing CJ 1 (grade "C" or higher), students will develop the ability
to identify and then analyze major offense classifications.
CLO2
By successfully completing CJ 1 (grade "C" or higher), students will be able to identify
and classify frequently committed infractions, misdemeanors and felony crimes.
CLO 3
By successfully completing CJ 1 (grade "C" or higher), students should be able to
identify the different ranks within the standard paramilitary organizational structure in a
standard U.S municipal law enforcement agency.
CLO4
By successfully completing CJ1 with a C or higher, students will be able to
analyze data and demonstrate an understanding of incarceration trends and explore if
there is a lack of equitable practices in the judiciary system.
CLO5
By successfully completing CJ 1 with a grade “C” or higher, students will demonstrate
knowledge and understanding of social justice issues affecting the Criminal Justice
system in America.
CLO6
By successfully completing CJ 1 with a grade “C” or higher, students will be able to
research and explore how individual bias including implicit bias and racial bias, can
affect decisions made by all participants in the prosecutorial process.

Course Description
This course introduces students to the characteristics of the criminal justice system in
the United States. Focus is placed on examining crime measurement, theoretical
explanations of crime, responses to crime, components of the system, and current
challenges to the system. The course examines the evolution of the principles and
approaches utilized by the justice system and the evolving forces which have shaped
those principles and approaches. Although justice structure and process is examined in a
cross cultural context, emphasis is placed on the US justice system, particularly the
structure and function of US police, courts, and corrections. Students are introduced to
the origins and development of criminal law, legal process, and sentencing and
incarceration policies.

1. Describe the history, purpose, and structure of the Criminal Justice System. Law
Enforcement Agencies, the Courts and the Correctional System.
2. Discuss the Criminal Justice process; from initial contact to incarceration.
3. Explain the difference and similarities of probation and parole.
4. Analytically critique the problems with the Criminal Justice System and identify the areas
needed for reform.
5. Comprehensively discuss various careers and roles within the Criminal Justice System.
6. Explore and discuss Social Justice Issues relevant to Criminal Justice

THIS IS STRICTLY AN ONLINE COURSE- You will need a computer/laptop
Please complete your written work (papers, discussion posts, exams on a computer rather
than the cell phone app)
• High-speed internet connection (DSL, LAN, or cable connection desirable)
• Access to CANVAS • Access to MS word or similar software

• If you do not have access to a computer off campus, there are many computer labs on
campus you can use to participate in the course. Most public libraries also have computers

with internet access that you can use for free.

• You will need to have an up-to-date browser, operating system and some additional
software on your computer to take this class. Check this Distance Education page for
hardware & software requirements. Some of the documents in this course will be available
to you in PDF form. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader software on your computer,
you can download it by going to http://get.adobe.com/reader/.

CANVAS ACCESS
This course will be delivered online through a course management
system named CANVAS. It is highly recommended students
download the CANVAS application to their smartphone and turn
on notification so announcements can be viewed immediately.
To access this course on CANVAS you will need access to the
Internet and a supported Web browser (Internet Explorer,
Firefox, or Safari). Login through the MyChaffey Student Portal
using your MyChaffey credentials and select the "CANVAS" single-

sign-on link from Launch Pad.

DISCUSSION FORUMS
Discussion Forums are a way for you to engage with each other about the course content. Each
lesson module will have a question that links to a discussion forum. You can also access each

forum by clicking inside the corresponding MODULE of that weeks instruction. In order to get
full credit for each discussion, you will need to post a thoughtful, articulate, well-written
response to the question and respond to two of your classmates’ answers. Please use complete
sentences.

Within the ORIENTATION MODULE, there is a page entitled “WHAT IS A DISCUSSION POST”
Please read the Page entitled “What is a discussion post” in the orientation module within
CANVAS so you can understand best practices for posting an online discussion.

COURSE PARTICIPATION POLICY
Participation is essential to your success in this class. In distance education courses, you are
required to participate just as if you were in a face-to-face course. To receive full credit for
participation, you will have to complete your discussion assignments and quizzes on a timely
basis. Consistent failure to participate in class will result in a low grade. Late submissions will
not be accepted. Do not request extensions after due dates have passed. Requests will be
denied.

DROPPING PROCEDURES
***It is your responsibility to drop the class if you can no longer participate. ***
***Do Not Expect The Professor To Drop You.*** If you do not drop the course and remain
enrolled(idle) in the class you may receive a failing grade. Please check all drop deadlines in

LATE WORK POLICY:
Late assignments, make-up quizzes and examinations will
NOT be allowed, without the presence of a medical or
family emergency. Work schedule conflicts, or conflict
with other classes does not qualify under this requirement.
Technical difficulties on the day the assignment is due will
not be excused. Especially your final exam. If you miss
your final exam or experience technical difficulties and
you message me after the deadline, you will not be able to
make-up your work. EXAMPLE: Your final exam is due at
11:59pm and your computer froze while taking it. You

waited until the last hour to submit it and you decide to email me at 12:30am; after
the test closed. YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO MAKE IT UP. Please submit your
work early. Even 1 day before will allocate time for me to help you. I cannot help
you after the exam closes.

*If you need additional help or an extension for your school work, please ask me
beforehand. There is always a solution to an issue if you communicate ahead of time
and not 1 or 2 weeks after. It will not hurt to ask. Always seek help if you need it. It is
okay to ask for help. I am here for you!

**NOTE** Discussion posts are a significant portion of students’ final grade. Students
will be queried by the instructor several times during the semester, and students will be
required not only to respond appropriately and relevantly to the instructor’s inquiries,
but will also be required to inquire about issues covered within that particular class
session. Each week, as designated on the online format, students are required to enter
an initial 200, 300 or 500 word relevant post by Thursday night and respond with a 150
word post to two classmates by Saturday night.
